Chapter 4

Autor: Madam Fenghuo
The hold was stale and foul.

The smell of the drugs mixed together and made me dizzy.

I don't remember when I fell asleep. I only remember that I dreamed.

I dreamed about two years ago.

To help Lawson hide dirty money, I dragged a steel case through an abandoned factory by myself, and to protect that money of his I hid inside an empty oil drum, just to stay clear of the police.

For two full days, the fumes knocked me out more than once.

Once the coast was clear, I brought the cash to him and found him at a family dinner with Beth.

The family elders had them surrounded, joking that the two families should arrange a marriage.

They both laughed. Neither of them said no.

I stood far off with my wrists shaking.

Lawson never once looked my way.

Then I dreamed about a year ago, when Lawson wanted a win big enough to make him the front-runner for heir and went to Southeast Asia to negotiate an arms deal.

I went to my father ahead of time and had him dig into the arms dealer's background. I planned every detail of the negotiation, and paid for hired guns to guard him.

But Lawson went to Southeast Asia early on his own.

He only called after he landed to say he had changed his flight and forgotten to tell me.

That night Beth posted on social media. The picture showed the two of them landing in Southeast Asia.

The caption read: [The best partners.]

I remembered every one of those moments clearly. They were like a barbed splinter driven into my chest, sinking deeper and deeper, and I had no way to pull it out.

I don't know when I woke up.

The back door opened.

I finally got a breath of fresh air.

Beth went up on her toes and grabbed a bottle of water in a hurry. She didn't look at me once before she complained, "What did you keep calling me for? I'm driving. Do you know how dangerous it is to call over and over? Lawson's in the car too."

I pushed myself up slowly, legs shaking, and started to answer, but Beth had already gone back to the front.

I climbed down. My stomach had settled a little.

Up front, Lawson had taken something for the pain, and the color was coming back to his face.

Only then did Beth notice the wound on my forehead. She looked startled for a second. "How did you get hurt back there?"

Lawson's gaze was flat. "We don't have any medicine. How do you get injured just sitting in the back watching cargo?"

I said nothing and nodded. "I'll go buy something for it."

Then I walked toward the store.

Lawson closed his eyes slowly. "Be quick. There's a dinner tonight."

After I bought antiseptic and treated my forehead as best I could, I pushed open the store door.

The road was empty.

I stood there with the cold running through me, the plastic bottle crackling in my grip. Then my phone rang.

Lawson's voice came through, annoyed. "Why didn't you lock the back door? Do you not realize cargo fell out?"

My chest tightened. "I never got in the truck."

He let out a breath of frustration. "Why didn't you get in and watch the load? What if we lose it?"

His first question wasn't why I hadn't gotten in.

It was about the shipment.

I repeated it. "I never got in the truck."

Something seemed to register with him then. The line went quiet for a moment, and then Beth's voice came on.

"Why didn't you hurry up? I assumed you were in the truck. We've been driving for ages. If we turn back now we'll miss the dinner."

Lawson took the phone and cleared his throat. "Why didn't you get in the truck?"

"We're in a hurry for the celebration dinner tonight. We can't turn around."

"Stop making a scene. Figure it out yourself."

I stood where I was, the cold wind drying the sweat on my neck, my eyes burning. "You're not coming back for me?"

Impatience crept into Lawson's voice. "Didn't I already tell you?"

"We can't turn around right now."

"You can't think of anything?"

Beth joined in. "If something this small already takes up our time, how are you ever going to help us run the family later?"

  • My Boyfriend and Best Friend Left Me Behind   Chapter 10

Lawson didn't go back to Southport.Instead, he found a place in Northbay, not far from the casino. And there was only one reason I knew that.Every night when I walked into the casino, he was there. He would stand at a distance, holding flowers.I ignored him and kept my attention on my own work.Later I got an email from Beth, cursing me out in it."You are truly vicious. If it weren't for you, he never would have ended our partnership!""Well, you must be satisfied now. Without those deals my father tore into me, and my mother wants me thrown out of the family!""You caused all of it! I treated you like a friend. Why would you do this to me?! You are so unbelievably selfish..."I didn't read to the end, but I already knew what had happened.I didn't reply. I blocked the address.A few days later Lawson stopped staking out the casino. I thought he had finally given up, and quietly congratulated myself.I also started posting guards around the casino. They were there to make sure he n

Beth was next, right after Lawson. She rushed to Northbay without so much as a suitcase and was waiting outside the villa first thing in the morning. The moment she saw me she walked straight up and started in on me. "Enough, Annie. It's been over a month. Are you still not over it?""I did the things you should have been doing.""Do we have to come coax you every single time?""Do you understand how important that load was? If the money couldn't be cleaned, everything we worked for would have been wasted."Listening to her, I couldn't help finding it ridiculous."And? What does that have to do with me? Was there anything in that load for me? Why should I launder your money?"Beth froze. Something dark settled in her eyes."How can you say that?""You built the route for that load, and you planned the handling afterward.""You can't do the work and then walk away from the responsibility."I kept my tone light. "Why should I be responsible for credit that went to you?"Beth lost it comp

A month later I was fully settled in at the casino.I had also laid down new rules for the floor. My father took me around the family business all day, and I moved through every kind of event. Every day was full. For a while, I saw nothing more of Lawson. That changed on the day my new casino opened and I acquired several clubs.Everyone in Northbay knew my name. Stories about me were going around, and plenty of people wanted to talk business with me.That night the celebration ended.I came down off the yacht and pulled my wrap tighter. But then I saw Lawson standing a short distance away, his eyes bloodshot, his hair a mess, and his stubble untrimmed. When he saw me, his lips trembled slightly."Annie, how have you been?"I was thrown for a second, then asked coldly, "Why are you here?"Lawson's expression eased, and he lowered his head, his voice quiet. "I came to see you. I heard you're doing well in Northbay.""Now you've seen me. You can go."I started to leave. He grabbed my wri

I stood up slowly and pushed my hair back. "Northbay. What do you want?"Lawson sounded shocked. "Why did you go to Northbay? Why didn't you talk to me about it first?!""What does it have to do with you? I go where I want."I let out a breath. Whatever patience I used to have was gone.Lawson's voice rose sharply. "What exactly are you being difficult about? Do you have any idea how worried we were!""You don't answer calls, you don't answer messages, all because we didn't turn around for you that day?! And that makes it okay to do something this irresponsible?!"Lawson hadn't changed at all.I listened quietly and laughed under my breath. "If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up.""Wait!" Lawson sounded desperate, and when he spoke again his tone had softened. "We aren't blaming you anymore. Beth took care of the laundering. Come back now and I'll go with you to thank her.""What's so great about Northbay? You're out there alone with nobody looking after you. You've had your fun. I'l

I turned my phone off when I boarded. In Northbay I moved into the villa my mother had arranged. After dinner a video notification popped up. Beth had posted a clip on social media. In it, she and Lawson were soaking up the attention at the dinner, the elders crowded around them with praise.Beth was laughing in that coy way of hers, tipping her head into Lawson's chest every few seconds.I didn't watch more than that. I closed it and shut down every channel that could show me anything about them. Then I turned my phone off again.Five hours later, over coffee at a cafe by the harbor, I finally turned it back on.The second it powered on, dozens of missed calls flooded the screen.More than a dozen unread messages followed.Lawson and Beth had taken turns blowing up my phone. Lawson had sent voice messages.[What is this supposed to mean?][Why is your account closed?][You know perfectly well the payment from yesterday's load has to be cleaned before it can go into the family account.

My eyes went hot, and when I lowered my head a tear landed on the back of my hand.I listened without a sound, my throat locked. They knew exactly how dangerous these runs were, that rivals could follow us and start shooting at any moment. And they still chose to leave me here.I had no gun on me. I had even taken off my body armor. They chose to rush back to a dinner and enjoy being praised by their elders. My vision blurred more and more.Even breathing hurt in my chest.Lawson's voice came through again. "Alright. When you get there, I'll come pick you up.""Call me anytime if anything comes up.""Don't wander off. You don't want outsiders noticing you and getting yourself into trouble. Keep your emotions under control."I drew a breath and hung up before he finished. In that moment the wind stripped the tears off my face. They came down in heavy drops onto the back of my hand, and I couldn't make a single sound. Before we left on this run, my mother had tried to talk me out of goin
