Chapter 5

Author: Flowering Tree
"You must have misheard," Chester said firmly. "How could a woman like her possibly know about our plans? Even if she did, there's no way she could tell us apart."

Felix kept his head down, saying nothing. After a moment, he finally nodded.

Chester frowned at him. "Felix, make sure you know your place. A woman of her status isn't even fit to be a housekeeper for our family. Stay out of this."

Felix smiled and firmly said, "Of course, Chester."

Even so, Chester kept a wary eye on him. "Go back for now. I'll take care of things here. There are only two days left. If she stays calm over these two days, it will all be over."

When I woke up again, Chester was sitting beside my bed. By now, I could easily tell them apart. Chester was arrogant, while Felix was gentle and a little shy.

"You're so foolish. I could have handled everything," Chester said, showing a rare hint of warmth.

He even reached out to brush my hair, looking genuinely concerned, but I didn't accept it and pushed his hand away.

The fragile warmth he had shown vanished immediately. He snapped, "Miranda, you were ready to risk your life for me a moment ago! Why are you acting like this now?"

I stared at his angry face, then shifted my gaze to his perfectly unharmed right arm. He had acted so convincingly yet left such an obvious flaw. I didn't answer him and turned away. "You should go. I'm tired and need to rest."

Hearing my cold response, Chester snorted and slammed the door on his way out.

Before leaving, he commanded the doctor, "Give her the best treatment possible. I don't want to see a single scar on her at the wedding in two days."

Once the door closed behind him, I finally exhaled, feeling a small measure of relief. However, it didn't last long, as the Thorne family arrived shortly after.

Seeing my dark expression, Giselle snorted. "What's with that look? I came to visit you, and instead of being grateful, you actually have the nerve to glare at me?"

I let out a soft laugh. "Ms. Holt, you stole my identity from me. Why should I be grateful?"

"What did you say?"

Giselle's face flushed red with anger. She clearly hadn't expected someone as meek as me to talk back.

Suddenly, a sneer spread across her face as if a new thought had struck her. "Miranda, do you really think you can act so arrogant just because you're about to marry Mr. Miller? Let me make this clear—being Mrs. Miller isn't that easy. Someone as lowly as you will never rise above your station.

"When we were kids, I could take your paintings and your inheritance. Now that we're adults, I can take your husband just as easily."

I stayed quiet, unmoved by her words. Instead, I smiled. "Chester will never be yours."

The second I finished, Giselle and Anne laughed, ridiculing my overconfidence.

I ignored them and kept the record button pressed on my phone beneath the blanket.

My calm only seemed to infuriate Giselle further. "I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?" she shouted, raising her hand as if to strike me.

However, I refused to submit any longer and grabbed her wrist midair.

"You dare fight back? The marriage isn't even official, and you're already acting like the lady of the house?" she snapped. "Very well. Miranda, do you really think I can't deal with you? Just wait. You'll be on your knees begging me to forgive you for what you did today."

That was the last thing she said before leaving.

I didn't take it to heart. Giselle had always been that arrogant.

Not long after, a doctor came to inform me that Chester had already completed my discharge paperwork.

I finally lost my patience and called him. "Chester, didn't you say you'd give me the best treatment? Why am I being discharged all of a sudden? Don't you realize my wound is still bleeding?"

He answered calmly, "There are doctors at home who can look after you. I don't feel comfortable leaving you alone in the hospital."

It was such an obvious lie, yet I didn't have the energy to argue. After a long silence, I hung up the phone.

The knife wound on my body suddenly throbbed, and blood seeped through the white bandage, glaring against the darkness.

Back in college, Chester had already been the heir to the Millers, making him completely out of place among his peers and leaving him with few social connections.

The only person he ever let close was me, but word got out to business rivals, who saw me as his weakness. Later, they even tried to abduct me, using my safety to control Chester.

I never imagined Chester would come for me. Back then, my grandmother hadn't found me, and the rest of the world treated me like I didn't exist. Yet Chester had kicked the door open and appeared at the entrance like a knight.

He bent down beside me, gently brushing the scars on my face and whispering, "I'm sorry I'm late."

Thinking of that, I couldn't help but reach up to touch my cheek. The scar had faded, but I could still feel it. The man who had tended to it so carefully was already dead on the night I learned the truth.

I realized the one who had actually saved me that day must have been Felix. Chester loved Giselle with all his heart and had never felt anything for me. Felix, on the other hand, truly cared for me, though his feelings were fragile, tangled with pretense and insecurity.

The memory faded as the bodyguards opened the door, leaving me no chance to refuse. However, they didn't take me home. Instead, the car headed toward the Thorne residence.

"Our heroine has finally arrived."

The moment the door opened, Giselle came toward me, holding a glass of champagne. "Miranda, welcome to my birthday party."

Declan's scheme against the Thorne family wasn't about profit—it was designed to force Lucian to inherit his family business. His mother had uncovered my identity and orchestrated the plan.Lucian held me on the couch, and for a long moment, neither of us spoke. Yet we both knew exactly what the other was thinking."Miranda, marry me," he said suddenly, declaring his choice.I watched his public declaration on the screen, feeling a bittersweet ache tighten in my chest.Suddenly, the door slammed open. Chester and Felix appeared once again.Felix gripped my left hand tightly and demanded, "What's going on? Your boyfriend is the one who pushed the Thorne family into this crisis. Miranda, why would you choose him instead of coming back to me?"Chester seized my right arm. "From a business standpoint, Lucian is trouble. He has ulterior motives. Mira, you're far too naive for him. Leave him and come back to me. This time, I will protect you forever."These were the same men who had o

As soon as I returned from Valdoria, a wave of relief washed over me.When Chester first warned me, I was terrified. I had trained in art, not business, and knew nothing about competition. Fortunately, I had an elite team and a brilliant ally, the business genius Lucian. He didn't lecture me on business strategies. Instead, he analyzed Chester's psychology. I gathered every file from the past few years, and he pored over them day and night until he finally found a flaw. Several contracts had conflicting terms and amounts. After hearing his strategy, I couldn't help but remark, "No wonder your mother insisted you inherit the family business. You really were born for this."Lucian smiled and handed me an invitation. "Tomorrow is my mother's birthday. She wants to meet you."It was my first time attending as his girlfriend. The moment his mother saw me, she scrutinized me from head to toe. I felt uncomfortable under her gaze, but Lucian stepped in just in time, easing much of her sus

We sat across from each other in the conference room, meeting as business partners for the first time.I was no longer the timid girl who once depended on Chester. I had become a composed and formidable businesswoman. I set the contract on the table and stated firmly, "The Thorne family is responsible, and we will share the losses."Chester froze, caught off guard by the Thorne family's swift agreement. In the next instant, I placed a lawyer's notice in front of him."However, our investigation shows that while Giselle was acting as your agent, you deliberately falsified contract terms and amounts to coerce her signature. "A board member once suspected something and came to Miller Group to confront you, only to be hit by a car three days later and left in a vegetative state. We reasonably suspect you committed premeditated murder to cover your tracks."When you publicly announce the Thorne family was involved in the scandal, this notice will also be released. Alongside it, the p

Felix gripped his phone, frozen as if struck by lightning. Her words shattered the hope and joy he had just felt into dust. The pain was so overwhelming he could barely breathe. He grabbed a bottle of whiskey and poured it down his throat like he didn't care about his life. The burning alcohol scorched his throat, and the spilled liquid stung his wounds, yet he drank on, as if his soul had been ripped away. The sentence "Your love is more disgusting than your brother's manipulation" echoed in his mind like a curse. When he woke again, he was lying in a hospital bed. The doctor said he had nearly died from alcohol poisoning.Felix stared blankly at the ceiling before tearing out his IV."Discharge me. I'm going home."…Back in Valdoria, Chester was drowning in problems. The company's stock kept tumbling, their rival company had joined the competition, and the situation was getting critical. The other allied companies refused to help. Chester knew all too well that business was

"Did you really have to beat each other up like that just to put on an act?" I took out the ointment and started applying it to Lucian's wounds. The truth was, Lucian and I were not a couple at all. Today was our first time meeting again since that night. He came to return the makeup I had left behind. He told me that his mother had drugged him that night, trying to set him up with a wealthy heiress from the Grayson family. Lucian was the third child in his family. He was exceptionally capable and had earned a PhD from Crestfield Business School before he was even 20 years old.His mother wanted him to inherit the family business, but Lucian refused. He was tired of family power struggles and only wanted a normal life. His mother would not let it go. She kept arranging political marriages, trying to bind him to the family through obligation. After hearing all that, I had little reaction. I knew all too well how brutal elite family infighting could be. What I didn't understand was w

  • My Boyfriend(s) Are Twins   Chapter 13

Chester kicked open the office door, and the board members' faces fell."Felix always looked like the obedient type. How does he pull something like this? He even has shares in Miller Group. Why would he turn on us?""Don't think about his reasons. Just look at the damage! The project we've spent three years building got leaked by another company. All that investment, billions of dollars down the drain!""That's nothing. All the details of the building collapse we worked so hard to cover up are now in his hands. If the media finds out, the company could be ruined!"Chester frowned. He knew better than anyone what would happen if the scandal went public. Just as he was working out how to handle Felix, Lucy spoke up, "Mr. Chester, Mr. Felix said that if you agree to his terms, he won't release the documents to the media."The room buzzed with speculation. What could possibly be so important that Felix would betray the company for it? No one suspected it was just because of a woman t
