Chapter 1

Mark's POV

The call had barely ended when my friend, Robert Decker, muttered a curse under his breath. "Look at this and tell me Nicholas Sampson isn't doing this on purpose!"

His phone screen showed a post Nicholas had made just two minutes ago.

"Lana brought over every suit and dress shirt in the store, but I'm terrible at making decisions. Why don't you guys pick which one looks the best?"

In the video, my fiancee, Lana Bowen, was standing off to the side as she had the staff bring over every single suit.

Nicholas laughed. "Isn't this a bit much?"

Lana wasn't looking at the camera, but the smile on her face was unmistakable. "You're doing me a favor by agreeing to be a groomsman, so the least I can do is make sure you look sharp."

My chest felt so tight I could barely breathe. Three months had passed between our engagement party and our wedding.

During those months, Lana kept saying she was too busy with the project, so she skipped out on choosing a wedding planner, food tastings, and pretty much everything we were supposed to do together.

I let all the other things slide, but I really wanted her to be there when we went to try on our wedding outfits.

Back then, she just shook her head helplessly. "Mark, once this gallery project wraps up, I'll get a promotion and a raise. I'm doing this for our future, aren't I?

"Besides, Nicholas already picked out my wedding dress for me, so only you would be trying on suits. Since I'm not trying anything on, whether I'm there or not doesn't matter."

At the time, I felt completely stuck, like I was caught between a rock and a hard place. I couldn't wrap my head around it. I wanted to see her in her wedding dress. Didn't she want to see me in a suit as well?

But now, I finally got it.

It wasn't that preparing for the wedding with me didn't matter. It was just that I didn't matter to her.

I'd been standing outside the banquet hall for 20 minutes at that point, and I was starting to feel lightheaded from low blood sugar.

Robert brought over a chair and made me sit, cursing up a storm the whole time. "Does Lana not have a brain? A wedding is a huge deal, and yet she's off helping another man try on suits? A groomsman suit, of all things!

"You already chose your groomsmen three months ago. Who adds another one on the actual wedding day?"

The two bridesmaids on the other side caught wind of what was going on and awkwardly came over to explain. "Mark, don't be mad. Lana's just doing this for work."

I lowered my head and closed my eyes for a moment.

I'd only recently found out the client behind that gallery project was Nicholas himself.

We'd all gone to college together, so everyone knew Nicholas was Lana's unrequited first love back in college.

Just to cheer Nicholas up after his heartbreak, Lana had gone and pitched the gallery project to her company herself.

When the company said no, she poured more than a million dollars of her own money into it.

She wasn't getting a promotion or a raise out of it, but if the project failed, she'd lose her position as project director.

She'd spent every one of those early mornings and late nights over the past three months with Nicholas, too.

Just then, the phone in my hand buzzed.

It was a video call from Lana. The moment I answered, she pointed at a row of suits. "Mark, hurry, help me pick. Which one looks better? I think these look better, but Nick likes those patterned ones."

Mark's POV"Remember last month when I came back from my business trip with a bruise? Violet was the one who did it! Anyone capable of hitting me like that can't be a decent person!"I didn't bother reading whatever came after. I just bolted upright.Last month, Lana said she was away on a business trip, but when she came back, she had a bruise on her face and looked pissed. She said she'd accidentally taken a fall, but whenever I pressed her for details, she got annoyed. But later, I found out that the trip she'd taken was actually a getaway down south with Nicholas, and we had a huge fight over it. And now, it turned out that bruise was from Violet. The door opened, and Violet came in carrying a small slice of cake for me. "You haven't eaten all day. You must be hungry. Have some of this first. Let's go get some steak later."I stared at her. "Did you hit Lana last month?"She caught sight of my phone screen, and the smile on her face stiffened.Lowering her head, she said

Mark's POV"Didn't all that money come from your own pocket?"Lana froze. Then the panic set in. "You knew about that? No—wait! Mark, listen to me! I was just… I just wanted to help him realize his dream!"We went to college together, so of course I should help him out! Mark, I never lied to you! Once the collaboration wraps up, I really will get that promotion and the raise. Everything I did was for our future!"I just shook my head without saying a word. "If you were truly doing it for our future, you wouldn't have sunk over a million dollars into a project that wasn't going to give you anything in return."And you certainly wouldn't have lied to me, left me to plan this wedding alone, and spent every waking moment wrapped up in another man."Lana was still scrambling for an explanation when a figure came running through the door and grabbed her by the arm. "Lana, why didn't you wait for me? I've been calling out to you this whole time!"It had been a long time since Nichola

Mark's POVViolet was shorter than me, so she would stand on her tiptoes whenever she wanted to talk to me.I leaned toward her ear to whisper, "Since you said you wanted to drive later, just stick to juice. If you insist on drinking, I'll drink for you. The juice is really sweet."She nodded right away and exchanged a look with Robert. Even now, Robert still couldn't hide the smile on his face.He happily trotted over with a glass of water for me. "Here, my dear brother-in-law. You and Violet should stick with water. Let your groomsmen handle the alcohol."I clicked my tongue. "You're milking your brother-in-law status already?"That just made him grin harder. "Don't you worry, Mark. If you two ever get into a fight, I'll always take your side."I couldn't help but laugh helplessly. When I glanced up, I saw Lana walking toward me with a dark look on her face. "Mark, you win. You just wanted to force me to come marry you, didn't you? Well, I'm here. Let's start the wedding cer

Third-Person POVOn the other end of the line, Chuck was so furious that he nearly passed out on the spot.Evelyn had heard the whole conversation as well, and she turned completely pale. They'd initially assumed Mark was making a big deal out of nothing. After all, there was just no way their daughter could have done something like that. But now that the truth was right in front of them, there was no room left for doubt. Lana had really stalled her own wedding for another man and broken their customs. The Bowen family had been thoroughly humiliated by now. Since Lana couldn't hear them, she took their silence as acceptance. She was just about to hang up when the emcee's voice came through the phone. "Congratulations, the ceremony is complete!"As of this very moment, Mr. Mark Waters and Ms. Violet Decker are officially husband and wife! May you have a long and happy marriage together!"Lana went stiff. Violet Decker was Robert's younger sister—the woman who had secretly been i

Mark's POV"Skipping the pre-wedding arrangements is one thing, but exchanging rings at 11:58 am is our custom. Exchanging rings right on the dot means a lifetime of wealth and good fortune. Miss it, and one is inviting nothing but trouble and financial ruin…""Lana has gone way too far. She's dragging her whole family down with her."Mr. Bowen was a businessman himself, so he hated hearing things like that more than anything. But he also knew that if they kept making a scene now, Lana's actions would only be blown out of proportion even more. And from then on, even the slightest thing that went wrong would be tied back to what happened today. That would hurt the Bowen family's business.Even though he was still furious, Mr. Bowen shot Mrs. Bowen a look, signaling her to back down immediately. The emcee wiped the sweat from his forehead. As I handed the microphone back to him, I felt Violet squeezing my fingers. When I turned to look at her, she leaned in and whispered, "Robert

Mark's POVEveryone in the banquet hall was stunned. Not only had the wedding been delayed for so long, but when it finally started, the bride had also somehow changed. On top of that, the ceremony didn't go as planned at all. The bride and groom had entered together, and they were already about to exchange rings before they could even say a word. Mrs. Bowen was the first to snap out of it.She shot up from her seat and pointed at me, exclaiming, "Mark, what is the meaning of this? Lana isn't even here yet!"Mr. Bowen's face had gone dark as thunder. He slammed his hand down on the table. "How can you treat something as serious as marriage like a joke? You're making a laughingstock out of our family in front of all the guests!"The emcee put on a strained smile and tried to drown out the shouting with his scripted lines. "Today, two hearts come together, bound by the beautiful vows we celebrate today! To preserve this precious moment forever, the bride and groom will exchange
