Dane’s Pov

The waterfall was always my quiet place.

When I was young, before being Alpha got heavy, I came here to think. To be alone. To be just Dane, not Marcus’s son or the next leader.

Now I came for a different reason.

I walked the small path through the trees and listened for any sound. The rogue, George, Freya called him, was seen here many times. Always watching. Never coming close.

He made me curious.

Not in a good way at first. Seeing him hug my mate almost made me lose control. But a

George’s PovI just stood there for a minute, breathing it in. That smell.Part of me was still trying to talk myself out of it. Twelve years is forever. Memories get fuzzy. Maybe I was seeing ghosts that weren’t really there. But nah. I wasn’t imagining shit.I knew that smell the same way you know your own pulse. It’s been haunting me since I was a kid, every dark forest, every busted-up shelter, every freezing night I spent out there alone as a rogue. It’s burned into me.No forgetting it.“We gotta wake them,” I said.Evie was already halfway to Dane and Freya before I even got the words out.“Dane.” She gave his shoulder a gentle shake. “Wake up. Something’s not right.”He was upright in a heartbeat. Pure Alpha reflex. Freya sat up right after, eyes snapping open, already scanning everything.“What’s going on?” Dane’s voice came out low, edged.“Nothing jumping us right this second,” I said. “No immediate threat. But I need to tell you guys something.”They both turned to me. Fre

George's pov Evie and I had camp pretty much sorted by the time Dane and Freya finally showed up.I'd stacked a solid pile of firewood and got the pit going nice and steady. Evie had the sleeping rolls laid out, supplies organized, everything ready for when they rolled in with whatever they'd caught.Except they took their sweet time."How long does it actually take to nab one deer?" Evie asked, squinting up at the sun for like the third time."Depends. Herd could've wandered off pretty far. Miles, maybe.""Or they got... sidetracked." She gave me this sly little look."Sidetracked how?"Evie just patted my shoulder like I was a kid. "Oh, George. Sweet, clueless George. They're mates. Alone in the woods. Do the math."It clicked. Finally."Wait, you think they...""I don't think. I know. Check 'em out."I turned just as they stepped out from the trees. Dane had the young buck slung over his shoulders like it weighed nothing. Both of them were drenched, clothes dripping, hair plastere

Freya's Pov We crept toward those voices, trying not to make a sound.Dane was up front, with George right beside him. Evie and I hung back, sticking close. My heart was racing like mad, but I forced myself to breathe even.Through the branches, I spotted some movement. Three people huddled around a little fire.We edged closer until we could make out what they were saying."....ought to hit the border by tomorrow if we push on.""Yeah, as long as the weather doesn't crap out. Word is there's a storm rolling in from the west.""We'll manage. We just gotta..."They cut off all of a sudden. This middle-aged guy with salt-and-pepper hair stared right at our hiding spot."Come on out," he called. "We know you're there."Dane stepped into the open first. We all followed suit. These three looked human enough. Two guys and a woman, all kitted out in sturdy hiking stuff."Sorry if we're interrupting," Dane said, keeping it cautious. "Heard voices and just wanted to check if everything was ok

Dane's pov I woke up before the sky even started getting light and Freya was already sitting there by what was left of the fire, just staring into the glowing bits. Arms wrapped tight around her knees, looking smaller than she usually does, which honestly worried me more than anything.“Couldn’t sleep?” I kept my voice low so I didn’t wake George and Evie. She shook her head. “Can’t stop thinking about those symbols. What they actually mean.”I slid over next to her and tugged her in close. She melted against me right away, like she’d been waiting for it.“We’ll figure it out,” I told her.“Will we though?” Her voice was small. “What if we’re walking straight into something way bigger than us? What if this whole trip is a huge mistake?”“Then we turn around and go home. Simple as that.”She tilted her head up to look at me. “You’d really do it? Just… turn back?”“If I thought you were actually in danger? Yeah. In a heartbeat.” I brushed some hair off her face. “Finding your family ma

Selene's pov I was out in the training yard, just me and the dummy, running through the same combat forms I’ve done a thousand times. Light was almost gone, sky turning that bruised purple. One second I’m alone, next second he’s just… there. Standing at the edge of the clearing like the shadows spat him out.I didn’t flinch. I’ve trained myself out of jumping when he does that creepy pop-up thing.“You’re back,” I said. Slammed the blade into the dummy one last time, twisted it for good measure, then turned.Same dark cloak. Hood up, face mostly gone. Three months of this and I still don’t know his damn name.“Got news,” he rasped. Voice like gravel he doesn’t use much.“About?”“Your Alpha. Left this morning. Him and three others. Headed east, vstraight into neutral land.”My stomach did this ugly little flip. “East? Why the hell would he...” Then it hit me. “The letter. They’re chasing that stupid letter.”“Yeah. The girl, her twin brother, and the brother’s mate.”I yanked the blad

Freya’s PovMorning hit way too fast.Dane’s alarm yanked me awake, and the second my eyes opened I remembered: today’s the day we actually leave. No more talking about it, no more packing and repacking. Just… go.He was already up, moving around the room super quiet, zipping up that one small bag he swore was all he needed. The kind of bag he could grab in his teeth once he shifted.“Morning,” he said when he caught me watching.“Morning.” I sat up, shoved a mess of hair out of my eyes. “You ready?”“Ready as I’m gonna get.”I threw on jeans, a tank, boots, stuff I could strip out of quick if I had to shift. Braided my hair tight so it wouldn’t whip me in the face later.Dane kept stealing looks at me while I dressed. That soft, intense stare he gets sometimes, like he’s trying to burn the moment into his brain.“What?” I finally asked.“Nothing. Just looking at my mate.”I gave him a small smile even though my stomach was doing flips. “Your mate who’s probably dragging you straight

George's Pov I was dodging her. I knew it. She knew it. At this point, probably the whole pack knew it too. Evie Morgan, with her big smile, warm brown eyes, and curves that made my brain short-circuit. She smelled like honey and vanilla. My wolf sat up and paid attention every single time she w

Freya's Pov I woke up to sunlight coming through the curtains and Dane’s heartbeat under my ear.I just stayed there for a minute, feeling his warmth, listening to his steady breathing, and the way his arm held me close like he was keeping me safe.Yesterday had been too much.Selene turning on us

Freya's Pov I found George on the training grounds the next morning. He was practicing fighting moves all by himself. The sun was just coming up, making long shadows on the dirt. He was already sweaty even though it was still chilly. He moved fast and smooth, like someone who had to learn to prote

SELENE'S POVThree Months AgoThe old cabin was in the middle of nowhere. A no-man’s-land where no pack bothered to patrol. I got there way too early and just kept walking in circles, arguing with myself. This was straight-up treason. If anyone found out, I was done for.But I didn’t see any other
