Chapter 2

Autor: Anonymous
From the very first day Gideon stepped into Sloane Manor, I should've known that I could never win against him.

This wasn't the first time he'd sent me abusive messages. I'd even shown them to my parents before, hoping they'd finally see his true colors and stop being fooled by his meek, obedient act.

But they only looked at me with disdain.

"Ivan," Mom said. "As expected of a child raised in the middle of nowhere. To think you'd resort to such tactics to frame Gideon. It's disgusting."

Disgusting. My own birth mother had used such a word to describe me.

It wasn't until later that I learned that Gideon had long since prepared countermeasures. He'd told our parents that I'd picked up bad habits from who knew where, and that I loved making things up.

The truth was, all my parents had to do was look more closely, and they would've realized that the screenshots hadn't been edited; they were real chat records.

But they hadn't. They'd rather believe that I was making things up than accept that Gideon was capable of something like that.

Things hadn't always been this way, though.

Before Gideon came along, I was also my parents' beloved youngest son. So when exactly did my life take a turn?

It was after Gideon came into the picture and our parents took us all on a family trip. The whole way, they only paid attention to Hillary and Gideon, not noticing that I had already fallen behind.

I became lost in the unfamiliar city. A man told me he'd take me to the police station, and I believed him. But once I got into his car, my hands and feet were bound.

That was when I realized I'd run into a human trafficker.

Before I lost consciousness from the chloroform, I saw cars passing by, as well as a family of four walking past. They walked hand in hand down the street, looking extremely happy. They didn't even realize that they were missing a son.

I screamed desperately, but it was useless. They were completely immersed in the joy of being together as a family, completely oblivious to me and my predicament.

When I returned to our apartment, our marital home, the place was empty. I knew Lenora was still at the hospital taking care of Gideon.

Every piece of furniture in the place, down to the smallest decorative items, had been chosen by Lenora and me together.

Even though we hadn't officially moved in yet, it was already filled with memories.

I walked into the nursery.

Everything inside was soft pastel colors and filled with adorable baby items.

Lenora said she loved children and wanted to have a child of our own as soon as we got married. Compared to a child, I loved her more. I was also worried that once we had a baby, she wouldn't enjoy the same freedom she did now.

But Lenora had said that a child would be the fruit of our love.

Unable to refuse her, I had the nursery prepared in advance during the renovations. Whenever Lenora saw cute baby supplies, she'd buy them and place them inside. Over time, the room had filled up.

When we decorated this apartment together, I could clearly see the love in her eyes. So why had things turned out like this?

Suddenly, I heard the sound of the door opening. I walked out of the nursery and saw Lenora entering the apartment. She looked tired. It was obvious she'd put a lot of energy into caring for Gideon.

When she noticed how distant I looked, she walked over and hugged me.

"Ivan, Gideon suddenly fell ill today. You know he has depression. I was afraid something might happen to him, so I had to stay with him. As soon as he felt better, I came straight back."

She explained it so matter-of-factly, as if everything about the situation was perfectly normal, and I was the one making a fuss.

When she didn't hear a response from me, she realized I might be angry and quickly added, "Babe, it really was an emergency today. I'm sorry. It won't happen again. Let's pick another good date and hold the wedding ceremony then, alright?"

I looked at Lenora. The urgency in her eyes made it seem like she truly did love me.

If I hadn't known what kind of person Lenora Bennet was, I might've actually believed her. But this wasn't the first time she'd abandoned me for Gideon.

Everyone was stunned.Lenora hurried off to get a doctor. The doctor conducted a series of examinations on me and finally concluded that there was no physical injury to my brain. However, severe emotional shock could trigger selective amnesia. In simple terms, I had lost my memory. I had forgotten all those who had hurt me.On top of that, I was suffering from malnutrition and severe gastric problems that stemmed from long-term abuse. If I didn't rest and recuperate properly, my life could still be in danger at any time. The doctor also said that the scars on my body were likely permanent and would never fade.My parents looked at me. I didn't know whether it was their conscience finally kicking in, but there was a trace of sorrow in their eyes.Gideon took their hands. "Mom, Dad, don't be sad. Ivan will be fine. You still have me. I'll stay by your side."Seeing them like this made my stomach churn again as a visceral wave of nausea washed over me.…My recovery went well af

When my parents heard what Gideon said, they quickly echoed him."Yes, that's right! He's Gideon Sloane! The one you're grabbing right now is our son, Ivan."I hadn't fully processed Gideon's words at first. It wasn't until my parents finished speaking that it finally sank in, and I immediately bolted toward the exit. But the man was much faster than I was. He released Gideon and grabbed me in one swift motion, then pressed the knife against my neck.Seeing Gideon freed, all four of my family members let out a sigh of relief.Lenora, realizing that I had been held hostage, tried to reason with the man. "What do you want with Gideon? As long as you're willing to let him go, just name your price. We'll agree to all of your demands.""What do I want with Gideon?" the man retorted, his eyes bloodshot. "If it weren't for his father, my dad wouldn't have been caught. Now that my dad is dead, he deserves to die too!"Lenora wanted to continue to calm the man down, but my parents had no

Hearing the commotion, my parents hurried out of the kitchen. When they saw Gideon on the floor, they immediately shoved me aside and went to fuss over him.I stumbled back a step, watching the four of them crowd around him, all their concern focused on him."Gideon, are you feeling unwell?" Mom asked anxiously. "Your immune system has always been weak. You can't get sick again."A cold scoff escaped me.Was Gideon made of glass or something? Was he going to shatter at the slightest touch? Besides, I'd barely even pushed him. He'd fallen on his own.I knew coming back tonight wouldn't end well. I shouldn't have come at all. I could've secured that important project by myself, even without the Sloane family. With that thought, I turned to leave. But they wouldn't let me.Hillary rushed up to me and slapped me across the face. "Ivan, you ungrateful bastard! If Gideon hadn't said he wanted you here, we wouldn't have invited you at all. Yet you dare to push him?"Lenora frowned sli

The news of my departure from Sloane Enterprises reached my good buddy, Chase McHale.Chase and I had always been close since we were kids. After I returned from the village, he was the only one who believed me.As soon as he heard the news, he immediately flew back to Laridia. He'd spent the past few years abroad dealing with company matters and rarely returned, so the moment he saw me, he asked what had been going on recently.I told him everything. After I finished, he gripped his glass in fury and unleashed every curse word he'd ever learned on the Sloanes. When he heard that I wanted to start my own business, he gave me a firm pat on the back."Don't worry," he said. "If you're short on cash, I'll give it to you. Consider it my investment. And if you need connections, I can make the introductions. Let's see who would dare turn me down."I patted Chase as well and gave him a thumbs-up. As expected of my good buddy. He was as reliable as ever.He wasn't just talking big eithe

"Gideon," I said, looking at him. "Why are you here all alone?"Gideon smiled at me, his eyes full of mockery. "I said I wanted a sandwich from the east side of the city and a coffee from the west, so they split up and went to get them for me."I see. They sure were thoughtful, running all that way just because of one request from Gideon. But I had long since become immune to things like this. It no longer stirred anything in me, and I didn't even bother responding. I just walked straight past him and headed upstairs to pack my things.Gideon, however, rushed ahead of me and blocked my path on the second floor. His expression suddenly turned vicious. He grabbed my neck with both hands and slammed me against the wall, looking as though he wouldn't stop until he strangled me to death."Ivan Sloane!" he roared. "Why did you have to come back and take what's mine? You should've died in that village! You should've died in that pigsty! I'll do you the favor now! To hell with you!"My

I lowered my head and looked at myself. While living in the village, I didn't have a single clean or intact piece of clothing. In the summer, I wore torn rags, whereas for the winter, I had one moldy old coat. When the police found me, they took pity on my pathetic state and bought me a new shirt. It was an adult man's size, and being as malnourished and stick-thin as I was, the shirt hung loosely on me, making me look almost comical. The birthday party was very lively, and the guests were all either wealthy or influential. Everyone was dressed luxuriously and carried themselves with elegance.Meanwhile, I stood stiffly at the entrance, looking completely out of place.Gideon, dressed in a high-end, custom-tailored suit, stood at the forefront. The moment he laid eyes on me, I keenly sensed the disgust and hatred in them.I turned to my parents and, with great difficulty, squeezed out, "Mom, Dad… I'm home…"But instead of the joy or excitement I'd imagined they would have upon se
