Sable’s POV

I went back to work like the waiting room had never happened.

Charts. Vitals.

Mireille stopped at my desk with her cardigan pulled tight.

“Sable, have you seen Rhett? He said he was coming in tonight.”

“Oh. Yes.” I kept my eyes on the monitor. “I ran into him. He was on the phone with someone.”

“Well.” Relief sat on her face like a small gift. “At least he kept his promise to show up. What about you? Aren’t you going home tonight?”

“No. Night shift. I won’t leave until morning. You

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 10 — Is He Mine

Sable’s POV The next day was a graveyard shift with no Melinda and too much quiet. I was behind the station updating a chart I already knew by heart when Rhett appeared on the other side of the counter like the night had sent him on purpose. No Isolde. Just him and a look that had not slept. “What brings you here?” I did not stand. Standing would look like I was ready for him. “You could have rung the bell. I would have come.” “Are you okay?” My hands stopped on the keyboard. “What do you mean?” “You look exhausted.” He said it again, slower. “Are you okay?” For one stupid second I thought he meant the waiting room. I shut it down. “Yeah. I’m fine. You should stay with your father. Unless it’s important, you can go.” He did not answer. He also did not go. The fluorescent light made the hollows under his eyes worse. He looked like a man who had been doing math since six o’clock last night and had run out of ways to make the numbers kind. “Your son’s face l

I won’t leave until morning. You can go home if you want. I’ll look after your husband.”“It’s all right.” She patted the counter once. “It looks like Rhett is the one on duty tonight, so you don’t need to worry too much. Take a break when you can. I’ll head back to the room.”Six-thirty. Dinner trolley. The hour Alden had claimed as his.I pushed the door open and the air changed.Mireille by the bed. • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 8 — Just Like His Father

Sable’s POV I kept the promise. Saturday. The park. Ivo’s hand in mine and cotton candy already staining his mouth pink. Melinda had taken Alden for the day so I would not have to look a six-year-old in the eye and break a pinky swear. “Mommy.” Ivo tipped his head back until he almost walked into a stroller. “I want to go on the roller coaster.” “You’re not old enough for that yet.” “Aw. But I’m tall enough. Look.” He stretched onto his toes, cotton candy held high like proof. “See? Tall.” “Let’s play on something else, okay? Maybe next year.” “You said that last year too.” His head dropped. He did not let go of the sugar. I steered him toward the spinning cups and the small train and every ride that would not ask me to sign a waiver with a lie on it. We had a good day. That was the truth and also the problem. The park was full of families that came in threes. A father lifting a girl onto his shoulders. A man tying a shoe while a woman held two drinks. Ivo saw them. He pret

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 7 — None of Your Business

Sable’s POV Night fell, and I went back to the hospital hoping the doorway would be empty. I wanted Rhett gone. Out of the city. Back to whatever life had kept him away from his father for years. I wanted one shift where I could change an IV and not feel nineteen in a locked room. The doctor caught me before I reached Alden’s door. “Sab.” He looked tired in a different way than this morning. Smaller. “I’m sorry I snapped at you. I shouldn’t have. I know you’re tired.” “It’s okay, Doc.” I meant it enough to let him off the hook. I did not have space for two fights. “I understand. I’ll be more careful. I need to go in and change his IV.” I smiled because that was what you did in hallways, and then I went in. No Mireille. No Rhett. The room was only machines and an old man sleeping with his mouth slightly open. My shoulders dropped a fraction. I could work like this. I could be a nurse in a room that did not contain his son. I had the new bag in my hand when the door opened. R

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 6 — It’s You

Sable’s POV I thought I had done my best. I thought I had moved on. Then Rhett Voss was standing in front of me, and the walls I had spent seven years stacking around myself and Ivo went thin in a single breath. “Oh God. Rhett—you’re here.” Mireille was on him before I could blink. Arms around his neck. The sound a mother makes when the one person she has been waiting for finally walks through the door. His gaze never left me. I snapped out of it, turned my face away, and left the room like the floor was on fire. The hallway was too bright. Too clean. My eyes filled before I reached the corner. Not because Alden had gotten worse. I knew that grief. This was older. Footsteps. I did not turn fast enough. Rhett caught my wrist and spun me around. Seven years later his hand still knew the same place on my pulse. “It’s you, isn’t it?” His voice was low, wrecked, sure. “Sable.” “Let go of me.” I yanked free and wiped my face with the back of my hand like that could

  • My Brother’s Best Friend’s Hidden Son   Chapter 5 — Seven Years Later

Sable’s POVSeven years later..“I’m home.”I dropped my bag by the door and Ivo hit my legs before I could straighten up. Ice cream on his mouth. Sticky hands. The whole of him collided into me like he had been waiting at the exact minute.“Mommy.”I went down to his height and held him. He smelled like sugar and the soap Lola used at bath time. Six years old and already too fast. I felt it every time I walked in late.Lola came from the hall with her sling bag already on her shoulder.“Good evening. You look so tired, ma’am.”“I’m fine, Lola. Thank you for staying with him.”“That’s nothing. I love being with him. He’s a lovely boy.” She smiled at Ivo, then at me. “I need to go. See you tomorrow.”The door shut. The apartment went small and quiet in the way it always did when it was only us.Ivo tipped his face up, serious. “Mommy. Miss Lola said I need to be a good boy. Am I a good boy now?”“You always are.” I tapped his nose. “Come on. Teeth. Bed. You ate all the ice cream in th
