Chapter 1

Julian and I are fraternal twins.

He uses a fake last name. I use our mother's maiden name. We look completely different. Nobody knows we're related.

I tortured him for twelve years at a top-tier Upper East Side prep school. Julian finally broke.

He got his Ivy League acceptance letter. He teared up. "I'm finally free from this demon!"

I leaned against the doorframe. I slowly sipped my Negroni.

My pathetic twin actually thought he was free. It was hilarious.

Julian muttered to himself. He trembled with excitement. "I'm going to college. Starting a new life. No more—"

"No more what?"

My voice dropped the room's temperature.

Julian went pale. He almost dropped the letter. Marco, our family bodyguard, took one look at me. He bolted from the room like he'd seen a ghost.

"S-sister? What are you doing here?"

"Just checking on my sweet little brother." I walked in. I savored that familiar fear in his eyes. "Let me see the letter."

"No, this is my—"

I shot him a look.

He let go instantly. Good boy.

I took the paper. I pretended to read it. Then I pulled an identical acceptance letter from my purse.

"You mean this one?"

I sat on his bed. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Julian drop to his knees.

"No... impossible..." He practically wailed. "There's no way! I applied to twelve schools! You couldn't possibly—"

"Of course I could." I crossed my legs. "I spent my entire summer on this. I used the family's dark money. I donated a new building to the board. I even sent the family lawyers to 'visit' the admissions director. We made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Did you think it was hard?"

I took a sip of my bitter drink. "Besides, how could I let my favorite toy run away?"

"Why!" Julian screamed at the ceiling. "Why won't you let me go!"

I couldn't help but laugh. "Because torturing you is fun. Twelve years of prep school, and you never disappointed me. Now we have four years of college to keep playing."

Seeing him sprawled on the floor in total despair put me in a great mood.

"But..." I dragged out the word. "I'm not a monster. On campus, we pretend we don't know each other. I'll be the Manhattan old-money heiress. You be the average rich kid."

Julian looked up. A tiny spark of hope flashed in his eyes.

Naive little thing.

"But in private..." My smile widened. "You're still my personal slave. Always."

...

I wasn't lying.

First day of classes. I stood outside the sorority house. I soaked in the envious stares.

Custom Tom Ford suit. Flawless Graff diamonds. Lethal Louboutin red-bottoms. Every detail screamed power.

Not far away, Julian stood with his roommate.

I didn't say hi.

That roommate was Silas Romano. He was interesting. Six-foot-three. Broad shoulders. Narrow waist. His dark shirt stretched tight over raw muscle. Pale skin paired with sharp, cold Sicilian features. He oozed intimidation.

Nobody talked about his background out loud. But rumors flew. They said he was a "Fixer" for a ruthless crime family. The kind of monster who kicks down a rival’s door at midnight and leaves no survivors.

Julian saw me. He immediately looked away. That made Silas stare at him.

Silas dropped his voice. "What's up, man? Is that the girl you're crushing on?"

Julian's voice cracked in pure panic. "No! I'm not! Shut the fuck up!"

Silas sighed in relief. "Good. A lethal guy like you needs someone docile."

Julian suddenly stopped. He glared at Silas. "Who the hell says she isn't perfect?"

Silas froze. He was completely lost by his friend's outburst. "I didn't say she wasn't perfect. I just said you need someone docile..."

"I'd burn the Commission down for Seraphina! I won't let anyone talk shit about her. She is my religion!"

Julian looked fiercely devoted. He looked ready to take a bullet for me on the spot. If he hadn't secretly glanced at me for approval, I might have swiped my black card and bought him a Rolex as a reward.

Silas took a step back. "Whoever you are, get out of my best friend's body right now."

I couldn't watch this anymore. I pulled out my phone and texted Julian.

[That's enough.]

[Understood! Don't listen to him, Queen. You will always be the most perfect woman in the world to me ]

I sent him five thousand dollars. I told him to get lost.

[Long live the Queen! I'll take my leave!]

"The Consigliere is here."The butler announced respectfully at the estate doors. A black Rolls-Royce parked at the stone steps.A middle-aged man in a three-piece suit stepped out. He was the Family's chief advisor, my father's most trusted man. His appearance meant only one thing.Major Family business."Miss Blackwood, Mr. Julian." He walked into the living room, holding a briefcase. "I've brought the trust inheritance documents you both need to sign."Julian and I exchanged a look. These were the documents we'd been waiting for."Please, sit." I motioned to the chair across from me.Silas tactfully stood up, ready to leave."Stay." I stopped him.The Consigliere opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick legal file."Per Family tradition, this document records the line of succession." He placed it on the coffee table. "We need to verify the birth times and the allocation of inheritance rights."Julian eagerly leaned over to look. Then, his face went deathly pale."This is impossib

"Seraphina!"Julian pushed open the Estate's heavy oak doors, his face glowing with the excitement of being home. His Tom Ford coat was wrinkled, his hair a mess.I had just set down my bags when I saw him bouncing around the living room."Mom sent me back to serve you!" He grinned like a kid with candy. "She said I have to take good care of you for Thanksgiving!"I was about to reply when the Estate's security alarm suddenly blared.Guards shouting. Sirens. The sharp screech of braking tires."What's going on?" I frowned.Julian turned pale. "I don't know."The front doors were kicked open violently.Silas stormed in."How did you get in?" I frowned. "The security here is military-grade."Silas didn't speak. His left arm was shredded by the perimeter razor wire, his tactical gear torn. Blood dripped from his fingertips onto the expensive rug. He clearly forced his way in, single-handedly tearing through three hidden checkpoints. But he was completely oblivious to his wounds. His dark

The phone rang at exactly 7 AM."Seraphina," my father's deep, authoritative voice came through. "Your mother and I are coming to your campus today. We need to discuss something."I was instantly awake. "What is it?""The consolidation plan for the East Coast ports. We need your stance on it."Damn. Family business. Major business."I'll be ready."I hung up and quickly changed into a sharp Armani suit. Twenty minutes later, a black Cadillac pulled up to my dorm.Julian and Silas were there too.Like two giant dogs waiting for their owner, they had been staking out my door for god knows how long. Seeing the luxury car, both froze."Seraphina!" Julian rushed over, eyes red and puffy. "Why are Mom and Dad here?""Get lost," I shoved him aside. "Don't let them see you like this."Silas shoved Julian away and rushed to me first."Sir!" He gave a slight bow to the Mafia Don stepping out of the car.My father stopped. His sharp eyes scanned Silas."Sir," Silas instantly switched to professio

"Both of you, explain this right now!" Julian pointed at Silas and me. "What the hell is going on?"His voice shook. His eyes were full of betrayed rage and despair."It's simple." Silas straightened his collar, smirking coldly at Julian. "I succeeded.""Succeeded at what?""Succeeded in taking your place." Silas's voice dripped with a victor's arrogance. "Now it's my turn to serve her. And you, my dear friend, can get lost."Julian went ghost pale. "Impossible... you said you were going to save me...""I did save you." Silas shrugged. "From a pathetic lapdog into a free man. You should be thanking me.""Thank you?" Julian's voice pitched higher. "Thank you for betraying me? For stealing the only person I care about?""Care?" I finally spoke up. My voice was ice cold. "Julian, what do you actually care about? Me, or the sick thrill of my absolute dominance?"Both men froze."Answer me." I stepped toward Julian. "In eighteen years, have you ever tried to fight back? Ever questioned a si

Seraphina's POV"What do you think of this place?" I sat down in the VIP box of the private theater.Silas looked around. Black leather seats. A private bar. A massive screen. Renting this for one night cost what a normal person made in a year."It's nice." He sat next to me, keeping exactly an arm's length away. "Thanks for inviting me.""Don't thank me yet." I picked up my champagne. "The movie hasn't started."The lights dimmed. Previews began playing.I could feel Silas stealing glances at me. Every time I turned, he'd snap his eyes away and pretend to watch the screen."You're nervous," I said softly."I'm not.""Liar again." I leaned closer. "Your hands are shaking."Silas clenched his fists. "I'm just... not used to this kind of setting.""What setting? A date?"His breathing hitched. "Is this a date?""What do you think?"In the dark, I saw him slowly turn his head. His dark eyes glinted in the dim light."Seraphina..." his voice was a whisper. He started leaning in slowly. I d

I stared at the seventeen unread texts from Silas. The first one was normal enough: [Valentine's Day is coming up. Any plans?]Then it took a sharp turn: [I know I don't have the right, but...][If you need company...][I'm not hitting on you, I just want...][Never mind, forget I asked.]The last few left me completely speechless: [If Julian disappeared from this world, would you be sad?][Hypothetically speaking. Purely hypothetically.][Baby? You there?]This psycho. I quickly texted back.[What are you going to do to Julian?]Instant reply: [Nothing! I swear! I was just curious!][Stay away from my dog.][Understood! So about Valentine's Day...]Before I could reply, Julian texted: [Sis, scored two black-market tickets for the John Wick premiere. VIP box. You want them?]I'd been waiting for this movie for six months. Julian was actually useful for once.[How much?][Eight grand. Already bought.]I wired him the money and replied coldly: [I'll take both.]Julian instantly sent a he
