Chapter 1 The Truth

作者: Evil SIL
"What nonsense are you talking about?"

On the other end of the line, my mom, Christine Smith, sounded both exasperated and amused by the accusation.

"Matthew, are you teasing me again? In this life, I've only ever had you and your brother—how could there possibly be another son?"

Hearing the certainty in her voice, the doubt in my heart quickly dissolved.

Of course. My mother was famous in all of Ardenford's high society as the model wife and perfect mother. Her gentle devotion to my father, Elias Mace, had remained unchanged for thirty years—she was the woman every other rich wife was compared to.

In our circle, scandals about women having affairs or keeping toyboys weren't uncommon, but everyone agreed on one thing—Roger Smith would never be one of them.

"It better be that way," I said coldly, hanging up. Then, I looked up at the arrogant kid in front of me.

He was dressed head-to-toe in flashy designer brands, his accessories piled on carelessly, exuding the cheap gaudiness of a nouveau riche brat.

Suppressing my anger, I asked evenly, "You just said you're the heir of the Smith family?"

"Oh? Another one? What now—calling in backup?" He sneered, crossing his arms. "Yeah, that's right. I'm Roger Smith, heir of the Smith family in Ardenford. What, got a problem with that?"

"Oh, I get it," he scoffed again. "You two are trying to cozy up to my family, huh? Too late for that! Tell me, besides the Smiths, are there any other Smiths even worth mentioning? What a pair of country bumpkins!"

Then, he turned back to my brother, his voice dripping with malice. "Timothy, so what if you've got good grades? So what if you spent a year working hard? My mom says one word, donates a building, and unravels everything you've done, making it worthless!"

My brother, Timothy, lowered his head even further, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Seeing him endure it in silence, I understood instantly. This Smith kid had probably been bullying my brother for a while now.

My father had always disliked ostentation and wanted us to stand on our own abilities. So, Tim and I kept a low profile outside, never revealing our background.

But Tim—quiet, focused only on his studies—had mistaken humility for weakness, and people like Roger took advantage of it.

I gently pulled him behind me and turned my cold gaze back to Roger. "As far as I know, all the paperwork and approvals for the exchange program have already gone through. Replacing someone at the last minute isn't exactly by the rules, is it?"

"Rules?" Roger let out a mocking laugh. With a smug grin, he pulled a stack of documents from his bag and waved them in front of me.

"You mean these? Timothy's application documents? Sorry—never made it to the office. I held onto them myself."

"No! Don't!" Roger let out a panicked scream. He stumbled toward Christine, tears streaming down his face as he begged, "Mom! Say something! Didn't you donate a whole building to the school? They can't expel me!" Christine could barely protect herself now, though. She had no strength left to care about anyone else. Mr. Lynch's fury ignited again when he heard the words "donated a building". Pointing at Christine, he hastily turned to explain to my father, "Mr. Mace, please let me clarify! That donation was made in Aureon Tech's name. We thought it was done with your approval! We had no idea there was such a mess behind it!" "I understand now." My father's tone was utterly calm—too calm.He looked at Christine. Whatever trace of warmth had once existed in his eyes was gone completely. "Christine," he said evenly, "as of today, you are no longer part of Aureon Tech. Everything under your name that was gifted by the Mace family will be reclaimed—every cent of it. "Meet me a

My father didn't even bother to spare them another glance. He turned instead to the trembling Mr. Winters, whose face had gone completely pale."You're the lecturer in charge of this program?" His tone was cool and even. "Y-Yes, Mr. Mace…" Mr. Winters stammered. "Did you revoke my son Timothy's qualifications for the student exchange program?" "N-No, it wasn't me," Mr. Winters blurted out, desperately shifting the blame. "It was Madam Smith—she made the call." "Very well." My father nodded, unwilling to waste another word on him. He simply pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "Hello, Mr. Lynch? It's Elias here." The voice on the other end instantly turned deferential. "Mr. Mace! What an honor! You could've just given the word—why trouble yourself to call personally?" "It's nothing serious," my father replied mildly, his voice calm as still water. "It's just Mr. Winters and a student named Roger Smith who bullied my son at your school. They stole his exchange studen

The moment my father mentioned his name, Mr. Winters' knees nearly gave out beneath him. He clutched the edge of his desk for support, his face contorted into something worse than a sob. "Y-You're here, M-Mr. Mace?" Everyone in the school knew about the mysterious "Mace Foundation"—the institution behind its largest anonymous donation and continuous financial backing. However, the founder, Mr. Elias Mace, was a near-mythical figure, a name whispered about but never seen. Mr. Winters had never imagined that the man himself would appear in his office — and worse, that he'd just helped a bunch of impostors bully this man's real sons. My father didn't even glance at his trembling figure. He walked straight toward Christine, whose face had drained of all color. "Christine," he said evenly. "I need an explanation." Her mouth opened, but no words came out.Cold sweat slid down her temples, soaking the edge of her immaculate makeup. Her whole body shook. Then, before everyone's

The moment I hung up, the entire office fell into dead silence. The security guards, who had been so aggressive just a minute ago, now exchanged uneasy glances, not daring to take another step forward. They weren't fools—between the tone of my call and the way all color drained from Christine's face, they could tell something was very, very wrong. Panic flickered across my mother's features. She stared at me, her lips trembling as she tried to keep her composure. She only dared to act so high and mighty today because my father was supposed to still be abroad—she thought she was safe, but she hadn't expected him to return early. Granger and Roger, on the other hand, looked confused for a second—then burst into mocking laughter."Calling your dad? What, is he God?" Granger sneered, folding his arms.Roger clutched his stomach, laughing exaggeratedly. "Maybe he called the village chief or something! He thinks he could get the person to mediate for him." Even Mr. Winters looked

"I've seen plenty of people like you who'd do anything to climb the social ladder—even making up fake family ties—I've seen plenty like you. Absolutely disgraceful!" Christine arched an eyebrow. "You look young. I'm guessing you work for some company? Being this obsessive won't do your career any favors, you know. I still have some influence in Ardenford. Cross me, and I'll ensure that you'll never be hired again." She actually tried to threaten me with her so-called power. How ridiculous. The authority she was so proud of was nothing but an illusion—one gifted to her by my father. Granger and Roger were smirking in triumph. "Did you hear that?" Roger jeered, pointing a finger right at my nose, laughing so hard he nearly bent over. "My mom said it herself—she doesn't even know you two! You're frauds! Impostors! Pretending to be part of the Smith family? You're shameless! Granger immediately straightened up. "Mr. Winters! Why are you still standing there? Didn't you hear m

The person who walked in was none other than my mother, Christine. The moment she entered, her gaze met mine and my brother's.For a split second, I clearly saw a flash of shock and panic in her eyes, but it vanished almost instantly, replaced by a mask of cold indifference. She acted as if she didn't even know us and walked straight toward Roger and his father. "Granger, Roger, are you two all right?" she asked with apparent concern. Granger Lowe immediately slipped an arm around her waist, putting on a pitiful expression. "Honey, thank goodness you're here! These two accused us of being impostors and even tried to hit us!" Roger quickly joined in, pointing at us and crying foul. "Mom! They were so arrogant! They even said they'd go to the school board to take my spot away!" Christine gently patted Granger's back, comforting him. Then, she turned toward my brother and me. "So, you two bullied my husband and son, huh?" The face that had once spoken to me with warmth and
