Chapter 1

Stefan and Caroline stood at the far end of the bridal shop.

He was wearing the custom suit made for our wedding day. She was wearing my custom wedding dress.

Side by side in front of the huge full-length mirror, they looked like a real bride and groom.

Caroline twirled, all smiles. "Stefan, it's so gorgeous!"

Stefan gazed at her so tenderly.

He used to look at me like that.

"I'll make you the happiest woman in the world, my princess," he'd told me once.

He hadn't made a big show of it, but back then, I thought it was the most beautiful declaration of love in the world.

I'd thought that look was only ever meant for me.

But now his heart clearly belonged to someone else.

Maybe he sensed me watching, because suddenly he looked up and saw me.

Panic, guilt and nervousness flashed across his face.

"Nina, what are you still doing here?"

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.

He hurried over and lowered his voice. "Caroline said she's never worn a wedding dress before. She just wanted to try one on. Don't read too much into it.

"Next time, I'll be there for your fitting. I mean it."

I looked at him.

At the suit he was wearing, the one made to match my dress.

At Caroline behind him and the smug little smile she couldn't quite hide.

"No need," I said.

That caught him off guard. "I'll take you to dinner tonight. French food, your favorite."

In that moment, the whole thing felt like a sick joke.

When we first started dating, he swore he'd remember everything I liked.

But now he only remembered what Caroline liked.

I turned and pushed through the bridal shop's glass door.

Outside, it was drizzling, and the October cold in Minnesota cut right through me.

"Nina!" He ran out after me, grabbed my wrist and pulled me under his umbrella. "It's raining out here!"

I stopped.

"Just listen to me. Caroline's uncle, Martin Hale, is a manager at Orbis. Orbis is the client our company wants most. Every nice thing I do for her, I do for the company." He was talking faster now. "We're about to get married. Can't you try to understand, just this once?"

I turned to look at him. "Just because her uncle is a manager at Orbis?"

"Yes. So I—"

"It's fine. Go back in." I slipped out of his arms. "Don't keep Caroline waiting."

I even managed a smile.

The rain soaked my hair.

He froze, like he wanted to say something.

But in the end, he still looked back at the bridal shop, where Caroline was watching us through the glass.

"Sorry, Nina. Why don't you grab a cab home? The rain's picking up."

Before I could say a word, he shoved the umbrella into my hand and hurried back inside.

I watched him walk away and let out a cold laugh. I had finally run out of patience with this man.

I took out my phone and called Mom.

"Mom."

"Nina? What's wrong? You sound..."

"Cancel the flights. You don't need to come out here anymore."

The line went quiet for three seconds.

"The wedding's off."

Mom didn't push.

"Okay." Her voice was warm. "Come home. Come back to New Jersey. Come back to us.

"We've always kept a place for you at the company."

The rain blurred my vision.

Orbis Medical Technologies was the biggest medical technology company in the world.

My parents founded it.

Seven years ago, I graduated from a top university. Taking over the company was the obvious next step, but then I met Stefan.

I followed him to Minnesota and kept my identity a secret. I started out as an ordinary product manager and worked my way up to head of North American operations.

He worked his way up too, from an entry-level job all the way to CEO.

I didn't want to hurt his pride. I never dared to breathe a word about my family.

Then he told me Martin was a manager at Orbis, and that he needed Caroline to get his foot in the door there.

So I told him who I really was.

But all he did was scoff. "Nina, when did you become just like everyone else? Vain and shallow."

So I stopped trying to explain.

I figured the truth would come out after we were married.

He'd be in for such a surprise.

Except there wasn't going to be an after.

"Okay," I said into the phone. "As soon as they announce the promotion, I'll come home."

In my second year overseeing operations at Orbis, I started focusing on charity work.I led the launch of three mobile health programs in remote areas, sending Orbis's mobile clinics to provide free care at the foot of Montana's snowy mountains and in small coastal towns in Oregon.Late one night, I'd just gotten off an overseas video call when I saw the breaking news about an earthquake in Alaska. The screen showed collapsed homes and survivors in tattered clothes.Injured kids were crammed into the emergency shelter. Some were shivering from the cold. Others were crying out in pain. The relief sites were running dangerously low on medicine, warm clothes and emergency equipment. It all weighed on me like a heavy stone.I decided right then to lead a team myself. We'd load up donated supplies and leave for Alaska first thing in the morning.I'd been at the field clinic with the medical team for four grueling days. The first time I met Harry Dawson was during a sudden aftershock.I was

I never in a million years expected Stefan to get so desperate that he'd pull an even more outrageous stunt to win me back.I'd just said goodbye to an important business partner outside the Orbis building.Suddenly, strangers were pouring in from every direction. They lined up neatly on both sides of the plaza, each holding a red rose. One by one, they held their roses out to me.One after another. All 999 strangers crowded in front of me, holding out 999 red roses.People passing by who had no idea what was going on started pulling out their phones. At the far end of the crowd, Stefan slowly stepped forward. He was holding the 1,000th red rose and a brand-new ring.It clicked instantly.Stefan had set this whole thing up.He was using the grand romantic spectacle and the crowd to corner me. He wanted to leave me no choice but to forgive him in front of everyone.I was so angry I almost laughed out loud. With thousands of people watching, he rushed up to me, broke down and begged for

Stefan still wouldn't give up.For days after that, rain or shine, he waited outside the Orbis building. The once-proud CEO who'd always looked down on everyone had lost all his former confidence. No more crisp suits. No more swagger. His eyes were hollow with exhaustion and regret, and he looked thinner and more haggard by the day. He'd convinced himself that if he kept showing up day after day, desperately trying to prove how much he meant it, I'd eventually change my mind and take him back. But he still refused to understand. I didn't leave because of some fight or misunderstanding. I left because I'd finally seen what he was at his core: selfish, always chasing whatever served him.Seven years of disappointment had piled up. There was no coming back from that.Meanwhile, Caroline was the first to face the consequences—and they hit her hard.Word of the lies exposed in front of the Orbis building that day spread through the whole industry in no time.Everyone finally saw her for who

Early that evening, I walked out of the Orbis building with a few executives, still talking about rolling out the new project. That was when Stefan came toward me. His face was covered in stubble, and there were dark circles under his eyes.He pulled out the engagement ring and held it up in front of me. "Nina. I know I was wrong. It's all my fault. I was blind, and I hurt you. Give me one more chance, okay?"A few employees nearby quietly stopped to watch, curious to see what would happen.I stepped back and shook my head. "Stefan, we were done a long time ago."All the love I'd felt over the years had drained away, little by little, long before today."How can this be over?!" His voice shook with disbelief. "We had seven years together! We lived in that tiny 110-square-foot apartment. We cooked instant pasta together during snowstorms. I remember the first roses I ever gave you. The mugs we made together and carved our little symbol into. We promised we'd love each other forever. We

My plane touched down in New Jersey. After seven years away, I was finally home.My parents were already waiting at the door.No blame. No questions. Just heartache written all over their faces."Oh, sweetheart. You've been through so much." My mother stepped forward and held me tight. My father stood beside her and patted my shoulder. "You're back, and that's all that matters. You'll always have a place to come home to."In that moment, I was just Nina, the daughter they loved.Three days later, I put on a sharp designer suit and headed to Orbis headquarters. In the top-floor conference room, every senior executive was already seated.Everyone knew that today, Orbis's only heir was officially taking her place as vice president. For the entire meeting, I stayed calm and in control. I went over the projects, pinpointed the weak spots in our market strategy and laid out plans for a brand-new line of medical technology. Now I could show them everything those seven years of hands-on work h

Stefan stood in the hospital hallway. At first, he'd brushed off Nina's message as something she'd sent in the heat of the moment. For seven years, every fight and every stretch of silence had ended the same way: Nina gave in.His fingers trembled as he called her, but the call went straight to voicemail. An automated voice told him she was unavailable.Once. Twice. Three times.Every single time."Stefan!"Caroline's sugary voice came from behind him. "I'm next. Will you come in with me? Please?" She tugged at his sleeve and looked down, stroking her belly.Stefan jerked free. "Something came up. I have to go right now."Caroline panicked. "Stefan, how can you leave? They're about to check on our baby!"Baby. The word hit a nerve, leaving Stefan rattled."Go ahead and get checked. Just call me if you need anything, okay?"Caroline froze where she stood. "What's so important that you have to go right now?"Stefan swallowed his impatience and patted her hand to soothe her. "Be good. I r
