Rowan's POV

The private room door suddenly swung open from the inside. I had no time to move.

My father, Zander Emerson, walked out of the room, surrounded by a crowd. He was impeccably dressed in a suit and stood tall and straight. He looked nothing like someone who had been sick for the past ten years.

I clutched the crate of liquor so tightly that my fingernails nearly dug through the cardboard. In front of me, he had always worn a faded hospital gown. He would gasp for air and clutch his lower back after taking just a few steps. But now, his complexion was rosy, and his laughter was loud and hearty.

The hotel manager bent forward to hold the elevator for Dad. "Mr. Emerson, your car is ready."

Suddenly, I felt a sharp, suffocating pain in my chest. I covered my mouth, but blood seeped through the gaps between my fingers, dripping onto the expensive carpet.

My supervisor rushed over and kicked me in the back of the knee. "Are you fucking insane? Do you have any idea how much this carpet costs.?"

I stumbled and fell to my knees, the crate of liquor crashing to the floor. Glass shattered, and liquor spilled everywhere.

My supervisor grabbed me by the collar and yelled, "You couldn't possibly pay for all this liquor!"

Dad finally stopped walking.

I instinctively lowered my head, hiding my blood-stained hands behind my back. Deep down, a small part of me still hoped he would recognize me, even if all he did was say my name.

However, he merely frowned at the blood on the floor. "This is Emerson Group's private gathering. Don't let people like that stay here. They're an eyesore."

My supervisor immediately nodded. "Don't worry, sir. I'll handle it right away."

The security guards dragged me toward the back exit. My palms scraped against the floor, and shards of broken glass sliced them open, leaving bloody gashes.

Even when the elevator doors closed, he still hadn't recognized me. My supervisor withheld all my wages for the night and forced me to sign an IOU for three thousand dollars.

I leaned against the wall and slowly made my way back to the basement.

When I plugged in my phone and turned it on, a voice message from Dad came through. "Rowan, I have dialysis again tomorrow. The hospital suddenly raised its prices again. I'm still short by 800 dollars. If you really don't have the money, that's fine. Skipping one session won't kill me."

After that, he forced out two coughs.

In the past, whenever I heard him cough, I'd worry so much I couldn't sleep at night. But now, all I could think about was how convincing his acting was. My bank account had exactly one thousand dollars. It was the deposit I had set aside for my own hospital stay.

My phone chimed again. Dad sent me a photo. There was medical tape stuck to the back of his hand, and there was a forged dialysis form beside him. The message read, "Rowan, don't worry about me. I'll get through this somehow."

I stared at that healthy hand and suddenly laughed. Just moments ago, he had used it to hold his wineglass in that private room. The watch on his wrist was worth enough to pay for dozens of my chemotherapy sessions.

I transferred 800 dollars to him. This wasn't for his dialysis. It was for the years I had lost taking care of him. I whispered, "Consider this repayment for the life you gave me."

I had just put down my phone when my mother, Morgana Sanders, called. "Rowan, didn't you have one thousand dollars in your account? Why did you only transfer 800 dollars?"

So, they even knew how much money I had.

I sat down against the edge of the bed. I said, "Mom, I have cancer"

There was silence on the other end. Then, Mom asked, "What?"

"I have late-stage lung cancer. The doctor said I might not live to see next month." I clenched the diagnosis report, waiting for her to ask where I was.

Yet, she just sneered, "Rowan, you're only 20! If you're going to lie, at least come up with something believable! Your father has been sick for ten years and never once complained. You've only been working for a few years, and now you're telling me you have lung cancer?

"Are you making it up just because you don't want to give up the remaining cash? Transfer the last 200 dollars right now. Are we clear?"

I deleted the photo of the diagnosis from my phone. I murmured, "Crystal. Just keep believing I'm making it up."

The line went dead. I collapsed against the side of the bed, coughing up blood until it quickly soaked half my shirt.

…

Third-Person POV

Meanwhile, Morgana told Zander what Rowan Emerson had said. She asked, "Rowan really has been coughing a lot lately. Should we get someone to check on him?"

Zander stared at the transfer notification, his expression turning grim. "He never used to keep a single penny for himself. Now he's not only hiding money from us, but also using a cancer diagnosis to test us. Looks like his devotion to us isn't as genuine as we thought."

He called his assistant, Ezra Williams. "Prepare a guarantee agreement for 100 thousand dollars. Then tell Rowan that my kidney transplant failed. If he doesn't sign it, the hospital will stop giving me my medication."

He added coldly, "This is the final test. Let's see who he'll choose when my life is on the line. Himself, or me."

Rowan's POVAfter my body was donated, the hospital held a small funeral for me. No guests from the Emerson family attended. No flowers lined the street. Only the doctors and nurses who had cared for me, along with a few of my coworkers, were there.Louis Stetson, my boss from the docks, brought a box of ravioli. "Rowan always said he would treat me to a nice meal once his dad got better. Now that his dad's better, that young man's gone and disappeared."The owner of the restaurant I had worked in put down a new coat. "When he was washing dishes, the cuffs of his sleeves were so torn they couldn't even keep the water out. I offered to buy him one, but he flat-out refused. Hmph, I guess he can't turn me down anymore."When Mom and Dad arrived, the door was already closed. A white sign stood outside the entrance. "In accordance with Rowan Emerson's last wishes, family members are not permitted to enter."Mom rushed forward and pounded on the door. "Rowan, I'm here. Open the door! Le

Rowan's POVOn the day of the press conference, the board suspended Dad from all his positions. He didn't argue. When he got home, he locked himself in his study. When Mom found the hospital where I had been diagnosed, he went with her.The attending doctor remembered me. He explained, "That man was terribly thin. I suggested he be hospitalized immediately, but he said he needed to ask his family first."Mom grabbed the doctor's hand and asked, "If he had been admitted back then, could he have been saved?"The doctor fell silent for a moment. Then, he replied, "His chances of recovery were very low. But our hospital has a charity program. If he had started treatment in time, he might have had a chance to hold on a little longer. At the very least, he wouldn't have died so soon."Mom's lips were pale as she asked, "Why didn't he stay in the hospital?"The doctor pulled up the payment records. "He originally paid a deposit of one thousand dollars, but he withdrew it later on. He w

Rowan's POVThe test records were leaked online. Dad's speech at the birthday banquet, the hotel surveillance footage, and the debt collectors' videos were all made public. The area outside the Emerson Group building was swarming with reporters. The board of directors urged Dad to lie low for a while, but he insisted on holding a press conference.Mom stopped him and hissed, "What more do you want to say?"Dad fastened his tie. "All the public sees is Rowan suffering. They have no idea what I've prepared for him. He has everything, including shares, houses, and cars. He even has Emerson Group. If he had just said that he couldn't take it anymore, the test would have ended long ago."Mom glared at him and asked, "He started supporting you when he was 13. How could he possibly admit he couldn't take it anymore?"Dad didn't answer her question. When the press conference began, Dad walked onto the stage himself. The large screen behind him displayed the gifts he had originally inten

Rowan's POVThat night, Dad had Ezra deliver all the test records from the past ten years. More than a dozen cardboard boxes filled the study. Each box was labeled with a year. The boxes for when I was 13, 14, and 15 had all been neatly packed away.Ezra stood at the doorway, hesitating to leave. "Mr. Emerson, are you sure you want to look through these?"Dad turned on the computer and said, "Why shouldn't I? Rowan had always been healthy. He could do heavy labor for seven years straight, which meant the cancer was just an unfortunate accident. The tests didn't kill him."He spoke quickly, as if explaining himself to Ezra. Maybe he was trying to convince himself. The first file contained a photo of me withdrawing from school. Back then, my homeroom teacher had held my hand, refusing to let me leave. "Rowan, the school can waive your fees. Please think it over."I shook my head, my eyes red with tears. "Miss, my father is dying. I can't stand by and let him die."There was also a

Rowan's POVAfter leaving the hospital, Mom and Dad went to the basement where I used to live. The landlady was tearing down the debt collection notices plastered on the walls. She looked them up and down, noticing that they were dressed head to toe in designer clothes. She asked, "Who are you looking for?"Mom asked hoarsely, "Does Rowan Emerson live here?""He used to." The landlady crumpled the flyers into a ball. "A few days ago, a bunch of debt collectors beat him half to death. After that, he left with his suitcase. How do you know him?""I'm his mother."The landlady paused, then burst out laughing. "Cut it out. Rowan's mother had to beg her own son for 20 dollars. How could she possibly afford clothes like yours?"Morgana's face turned pale at her words.Dad walked past her and went straight into my home. The basement had no windows, so the lights had to stay on even during the day. My bed was pushed against the moldy wall. The only thing on the table was half a bag of

Rowan's POVWhen Sophia wheeled in a gurney, Mom lunged toward it like a madwoman. "What are you doing? Who gave you permission to touch my son?" she cried. She threw herself in front of the door, her hands gripping the edge of the gurney for dear life.Sophia stopped and explained, "Rowan signed a body donation agreement before his death. We need to take him to the donation center now.""What? I don't agree to this!" Mom yelled. Then, she turned to Dad. "Zander, say something!"Dad stared at my body beneath the white sheet, his expression frighteningly grim. He took out his phone and called his lawyer. "Get to the hospital within ten minutes. Stop the donation immediately."The doctor frowned. "Mr. Emerson, Rowan is an adult. He made his choice."Yet Dad didn't seem to hear him. He said, "Get a team of specialists in here to check his heartbeat and brain activity again. If the specialists here can't do it, contact some overseas. Money is not an issue. He can't be dead!"The do
