Chapter 3

Author: A Promise
Rowan's POV

On the third day after checking into the hospice, I began sorting through my belongings. Calling them belongings was an exaggeration, though. There wasn't much to sort through. I had spent seven years working, but I had never even bought myself a single decent thing.

My nurse, Sophia Langford, brought me three metal boxes. The first was filled with years' worth of pay slips and bank transfer records.

At 13, I had washed dishes at a restaurant, earning 230 dollars a month. At 14, I had hauled bricks during the day and unloaded trucks at night. That was the first time I had managed to scrape together enough money for Dad's dialysis.

At 15, I had worked until I developed gastric bleeding. When I woke up, the first thing I asked was whether my absence that day would count as skipping work.

I had given my parents a total of 187 thousand dollars. Every last cent went to them.

The second box contained Dad's dialysis bills, surgical records, and debt agreements from all those years. Every last one of them was fake. I placed my own lung cancer diagnosis on top. Among all those forged medical records, it was the only one that was real.

The third box held the gifts I had prepared for my parents. For Dad, it was a digital watch that cost six dollars. He used to complain that there was no clock in the dialysis room, so he never knew how much longer he had to endure each session.

For Mom, it was a discounted scarf. She had lied to me, saying she swept the streets before dawn and that the winter cold left her hands too stiff to straighten them.

Sophia's eyes filled with tears as she asked, "They lied to you. Why are you still keeping all this?"

I touched the scarf. "The gifts are real. So is my wish for them to have a better life."

The night before my birthday, I coughed up a large amount of blood. My blood oxygen levels kept dropping, and the doctor rushed me into the emergency room.

…

Third-Person POV

Sophia found Zander's number in my bank transfer records and called him over a dozen times.

At that moment, he was in the company's conference room, making arrangements for the heir's banquet the next day. When the call finally connected, Sophia said urgently, "Is this Rowan Emerson's father? He's being resuscitated right now. We need a family member to come to the hospital and sign the consent forms!"

Zander was silent for two seconds. Then, he asked, "Are you an actress he hired?"

Sophia froze. "This is a hospital! He has late-stage lung cancer, and he's in critical condition!"

However, Zander cut her off. "Tell him there's a limit to how far he can take this fake illness. For just two hundred dollars, he's gone from pretending to have cancer to faking a medical emergency. He's quite the actor. Tell him to show up at his birthday banquet and apologize by noon tomorrow. Or else, he is no longer a part of the Emerson family."

Then, the call was disconnected.

…

Rowan's POV

I could faintly hear Dad's voice. With great difficulty, I pulled off my oxygen mask and asked, "What did he say?"

Sophia's eyes welled up with tears, but she didn't answer.

Yet, I still laughed, "Did he tell me to stop my act?"

When I briefly regained consciousness, I handed her the three metal boxes. "If I don't wake up tomorrow, could you please deliver these to this address at noon?"

It was the hotel where Dad had arranged my birthday banquet. Then I signed the organ donation form. By the time my pen reached the final stroke of my name, I had no strength left.

Sophia steadied my hand, her tears falling onto the paper.

I looked at my signature and whispered, "Maybe it's for the best. I never left them anything while I was alive. At least in death, I can still leave something behind for someone else."

…

Third-Person POV

On Rowan's birthday, the Emerson family had booked out the most luxurious hotel in the city. At the center of the banquet hall lay the keys to a luxury car, the property deed to a villa, and a share transfer agreement for Emerson Group.

Across the giant screen, the words read, "Welcome home, the sole heir to the Emerson Group!"

At exactly noon, Zander walked onto the stage with a wine glass in hand. "To raise Rowan, I kept our family's wealth a secret and let him grow up in poverty. The facts have proved that my approach was correct. He's loyal, hardworking, and responsible. He's my proudest achievement."

Applause filled the hall. Yet, Morgana kept glancing toward the entrance. By 12:30 pm, Rowan still hadn't shown up. She asked anxiously, "Could something have happened to Rowan?"

Zander's expression hardened. "He just wants us to worry. Once he finds out all of this belongs to him, he'll come running faster than anyone."

Just then, the banquet hall doors swung open. Sophia walked in, carrying three metal boxes. "Who is Rowan Emerson's family?"

Rowan's POVAfter my body was donated, the hospital held a small funeral for me. No guests from the Emerson family attended. No flowers lined the street. Only the doctors and nurses who had cared for me, along with a few of my coworkers, were there.Louis Stetson, my boss from the docks, brought a box of ravioli. "Rowan always said he would treat me to a nice meal once his dad got better. Now that his dad's better, that young man's gone and disappeared."The owner of the restaurant I had worked in put down a new coat. "When he was washing dishes, the cuffs of his sleeves were so torn they couldn't even keep the water out. I offered to buy him one, but he flat-out refused. Hmph, I guess he can't turn me down anymore."When Mom and Dad arrived, the door was already closed. A white sign stood outside the entrance. "In accordance with Rowan Emerson's last wishes, family members are not permitted to enter."Mom rushed forward and pounded on the door. "Rowan, I'm here. Open the door! Le

Rowan's POVOn the day of the press conference, the board suspended Dad from all his positions. He didn't argue. When he got home, he locked himself in his study. When Mom found the hospital where I had been diagnosed, he went with her.The attending doctor remembered me. He explained, "That man was terribly thin. I suggested he be hospitalized immediately, but he said he needed to ask his family first."Mom grabbed the doctor's hand and asked, "If he had been admitted back then, could he have been saved?"The doctor fell silent for a moment. Then, he replied, "His chances of recovery were very low. But our hospital has a charity program. If he had started treatment in time, he might have had a chance to hold on a little longer. At the very least, he wouldn't have died so soon."Mom's lips were pale as she asked, "Why didn't he stay in the hospital?"The doctor pulled up the payment records. "He originally paid a deposit of one thousand dollars, but he withdrew it later on. He w

Rowan's POVThe test records were leaked online. Dad's speech at the birthday banquet, the hotel surveillance footage, and the debt collectors' videos were all made public. The area outside the Emerson Group building was swarming with reporters. The board of directors urged Dad to lie low for a while, but he insisted on holding a press conference.Mom stopped him and hissed, "What more do you want to say?"Dad fastened his tie. "All the public sees is Rowan suffering. They have no idea what I've prepared for him. He has everything, including shares, houses, and cars. He even has Emerson Group. If he had just said that he couldn't take it anymore, the test would have ended long ago."Mom glared at him and asked, "He started supporting you when he was 13. How could he possibly admit he couldn't take it anymore?"Dad didn't answer her question. When the press conference began, Dad walked onto the stage himself. The large screen behind him displayed the gifts he had originally inten

Rowan's POVThat night, Dad had Ezra deliver all the test records from the past ten years. More than a dozen cardboard boxes filled the study. Each box was labeled with a year. The boxes for when I was 13, 14, and 15 had all been neatly packed away.Ezra stood at the doorway, hesitating to leave. "Mr. Emerson, are you sure you want to look through these?"Dad turned on the computer and said, "Why shouldn't I? Rowan had always been healthy. He could do heavy labor for seven years straight, which meant the cancer was just an unfortunate accident. The tests didn't kill him."He spoke quickly, as if explaining himself to Ezra. Maybe he was trying to convince himself. The first file contained a photo of me withdrawing from school. Back then, my homeroom teacher had held my hand, refusing to let me leave. "Rowan, the school can waive your fees. Please think it over."I shook my head, my eyes red with tears. "Miss, my father is dying. I can't stand by and let him die."There was also a

Rowan's POVAfter leaving the hospital, Mom and Dad went to the basement where I used to live. The landlady was tearing down the debt collection notices plastered on the walls. She looked them up and down, noticing that they were dressed head to toe in designer clothes. She asked, "Who are you looking for?"Mom asked hoarsely, "Does Rowan Emerson live here?""He used to." The landlady crumpled the flyers into a ball. "A few days ago, a bunch of debt collectors beat him half to death. After that, he left with his suitcase. How do you know him?""I'm his mother."The landlady paused, then burst out laughing. "Cut it out. Rowan's mother had to beg her own son for 20 dollars. How could she possibly afford clothes like yours?"Morgana's face turned pale at her words.Dad walked past her and went straight into my home. The basement had no windows, so the lights had to stay on even during the day. My bed was pushed against the moldy wall. The only thing on the table was half a bag of

Rowan's POVWhen Sophia wheeled in a gurney, Mom lunged toward it like a madwoman. "What are you doing? Who gave you permission to touch my son?" she cried. She threw herself in front of the door, her hands gripping the edge of the gurney for dear life.Sophia stopped and explained, "Rowan signed a body donation agreement before his death. We need to take him to the donation center now.""What? I don't agree to this!" Mom yelled. Then, she turned to Dad. "Zander, say something!"Dad stared at my body beneath the white sheet, his expression frighteningly grim. He took out his phone and called his lawyer. "Get to the hospital within ten minutes. Stop the donation immediately."The doctor frowned. "Mr. Emerson, Rowan is an adult. He made his choice."Yet Dad didn't seem to hear him. He said, "Get a team of specialists in here to check his heartbeat and brain activity again. If the specialists here can't do it, contact some overseas. Money is not an issue. He can't be dead!"The do
