Chapter 4

Autor: Perfect Timing
In return, insults and disdain were all I received.

The room was in a mess because my condition had deteriorated rapidly. My mother had rushed over to get some clothes and then hurried off to the ICU to take care of me.

As my wife, she did not even take the initiative to call me after such a long time. If she cared about me, she would have shown at least some level of concern, even if I said it was a stomach problem.

It was ridiculous that I was even afraid it would trigger her painful memories of having cancer when she came to the hospital and saw the furnishings of the intensive care unit. It turned out that I was just overthinking things.

I simply could not face her and drifted out of the house.

Anthony was standing far away and answering his phone, his expression full of smugness. "That stupid Jane believes whatever I say. She even thinks I can really make her rich. Then again, someone who can't tell right from wrong deserves to be deceived! Her husband is so kind to her, yet she doesn't even ask about him when he's hospitalized.

"I was only teasing her, telling her to shoot a few sexy, borderline photos and model for us for free. She actually said yes. Babe, don't misunderstand. I have no feelings for her at all. She was pretty back then, but now..."

Anthony scoffed, his face full of disdain. "She has no boobs; any woman would be better than her. Oh, she's not flat-chested; she had breast cancer and had them removed. Tsk tsk, I really don't know why her stupid husband treats her like a treasure."

I stood there in a daze, feeling both sorry for myself and furious at Jane's poor judgment. I pondered how Jane could get tricked by the same person twice.

I rushed back, wanting to drag her out and make her hear it herself to see how despicable her first love was and how he treated her trauma as a joke.

However, my hands became transparent when I touched her. I paced frantically around the room, but there was nothing I could do.

Jane threw the rag, looked around, and seemed lost in thought.

"Why did he stop calling? Is he really angry? I only mortgaged the house to get through an emergency," she muttered to herself, a hint of worry in her eyes.

"He better not get too worked up. His stomach's been acting up. How about I... make a call?" She gripped her phone, seemingly hesitant about whether to contact me.

After all, I was always the one offering her a way out, always sweet-talking to appease her; we had rarely argued.

However, with a knock on the door, she quickly composed herself.

Outside the door stood not only Anthony, but also my mother, holding Maya.

The two were staring at each other.

Seeing Jane, my mother's suppressed grief seemed to erupt immediately. "Gale called you so many times; why didn't you answer? Jane, tell me, how did Gale treat you? Search your conscience! He felt sorry for you having no parents, always telling us to be considerate of you, but what did you do? How did you treat my son?"

My mother was trembling all over. It felt like she would not have the strength even to stand had she not been holding Maya.

Jane was a little embarrassed, forcing a weak smile. "Mom, I was just busy with work. Besides, you know what Gale is like. He's just sulking with me. His stomachache is nothing serious and doesn't warrant hospitalization. I know him best; he's just too dramatic sometimes."

My mother pointed at her angrily, her hand trembling. "Stomachache? Nothing serious? He's being dramatic? Jane, you don't even know what illness he had! And yet you have the nerve to call him dramatic?! He's dead, do you know that?!"

Jane paused, instinctively reaching for my mother.

My mother raised her hand and pushed her away.

Anthony stepped forward, blocking Jane. "Old lady, calm down and talk. No offense, but at your age, how can you curse your own son?"

"Let me tell you something. I can live just as well without you."When the dial tone followed that, my mind went blank. The doctor solemnly asked me, "Are you sure you don't want treatment?"I nodded. "Yes."It was an unpredictable, last-ditch operation, and there was no need for me to risk it for her anymore.Anthony left again without saying goodbye. Perhaps he would not go very far this time.He deceived not just Jane. Someone had already collected all the evidence and submitted it to the police. Him being arrested and brought to justice was just a matter of time. However, our only house had already been seized and was waiting to be auctioned off.Jane was curled up in the small rented room, with a row of messy medicine bottles beside the bed.It felt as if she was back in that dark and cramped rented house ten years ago. Suffering from illness, she kept sending text messages, yet she would never receive a reply from me again. The pain made it difficult for her to get up,

"It's ridiculous! What man could stand the way you are?"He smiled and pinched Jane's chin. "Flirting with you was pretty exciting, thanks to that pretty face of yours, but I won't take things any further."She struggled free; Anthony immediately turned grim and forcefully slammed the door shut.Through the door, his voice came with a teasing tone. "You should know your place. Do you think you're still a young girl in her 20s?"Jane walked away with a livid expression. She ran to call the police, but when the records were shown one by one, even the police looked at her in confusion. "You signed a gift agreement."She hurriedly explained. "I was deceived. He told me that formal procedures were needed to protect my rights. Because... Because we were classmates, I didn't pay close attention."The police officer seemed as if he had seen it all, even repeating, "Classmates?"Jane stammered and remained silent. After her case was reluctantly accepted, she walked back in a dazed stat

"Did he bully you again, Jane? You shouldn't keep it in. Just get a divorce if it's really unbearable. The money is all in the company projects. How could we withdraw all of it in a short time? If he's fussing over it, I think he’s doing it on purpose."She wiped her tears and pleaded urgently. "No, Anthony. Help me think of a solution. I need this money today!"She began to push the door forcefully, but Anthony firmly held the door, preventing her from entering.Just then, someone peeked through the crack of the door."How come you still haven't broken up with this old hag?" It was a strikingly beautiful woman with a sharp chin, wearing Anthony's shirt and showing off her long legs. She seemed familiar and it took me a long time to remember who she was. This woman was a female streamer who became popular on a certain short video platform recently by posting borderline sexy videos.Jane paused for a moment and stopped pushing the door. If she cared about my situation and had asked around just a little bit, someone would surely have told her, but she did not do so.Even if she thought I was just hospitalized for stomach problems, her indifference had already completely broken my heart. Her choice in giving her affection to Anthony made me extremely miserable. The most painful part was that even until death, the person I loved with all my heart could not spare a moment to see me.The emergency doctor quickly examined her health records and contacted the nearest emergency department.Jane looked around blankly. "Let me go back. I don't believe it. I want to see Gale. He wouldn't leave me behind."Even though several people held her down, she still managed to pull out the IV tubing. My mother eventually could not stop herself from shouting furiously, "What were you doing all this time? Only now are you looking for him, but he's dead and buried! What are you still fussing about? You want Maya to lose her mother as w

I knew she was waiting for my message. There were times when she had blocked me before too. She occasionally threw a tantrum, and I desperately tried to coax her. However, she still had no idea that I would never text her again. When she got to her front door, she took it out again, annoyance creeping across her face as she checked it. As if with great courage, she typed out a line and clicked send.Jane: [Maya misses her dad. What would you like to eat? I'll bring her over to see you later.]In the elevator, she sang a song. It was Undying Love — the same song she used to love singing at karaoke bars."We believed our love would last forever. "My son made dozens of calls before his death but couldn't get through to her.
