Chapter 1

The icy seawater engulfed me. The cold cut through my bones as I struggled desperately, clinging to the last shred of hope I had left.

Through the haze, I saw Elijah Jensen burst out of the captain's cabin and dive straight into the sea.

"Elijah! I'm here!" I screamed, waving my arms as hard as I could.

Even though my voice was drowned out by the roaring waves, his eyes found me at once. But the next second, he turned away and swam toward Kristen Langford, who was fighting to stay afloat. His voice was tight with panic as he shouted, "Don't be afraid, Kristen! I'm coming!"

Kristen leaned weakly against his chest, saying softly, "Eli, I'm so cold. A-Am I going to die?"

He frowned and pulled her closer.

"Don't say that. I won't let anything happen to you. I'll get you to a hospital," he replied before carefully lifting Kristen onto a lifeboat.

There was tenderness in his eyes, as if she were something fragile and precious.

With the last of my strength, I swam toward them, my trembling fingers digging into the edge of the lifeboat.

Suddenly, Elijah turned and slapped my hand away.

"Gwendolyn Clark! Are you seriously trying to make this about you right now?" His cold eyes locked on mine. "Drop the act. You can swim just fine. Besides, there are plenty of lifeboats. Go find another one."

I plunged back into the sea, choking on mouthfuls of saltwater until my throat burned.

For a moment, Elijah faltered. He started to reach for me, but Kristen caught his arm and let out a weak groan. "Eli… I don't think I can make it to the hospital. I-I can't breathe…"

All at once, the color drained from Elijah's face.

"You can take another lifeboat later. Kristen can't wait," he said over his shoulder.

Then, he gunned the engine and sped away in the lifeboat.

Amidst the roar of the engine, I coughed up the last of the seawater. I wanted to tell him that I wasn't pretending.

When I fell from the cruise ship, my leg slammed against the hull. It broke on impact, leaving me unable to swim. Even if I hadn't been hurt, the panicked passengers had already taken every lifeboat.

I watched helplessly as Elijah's boat vanished over the horizon, the waves slowly swallowing me whole.

It didn't matter. He had no intention of hearing my side of the story anyway.

I had loved him for three years, but to him, I was just a liar who was good at putting on an act. Then again, how could I ever compare to his childhood friend, who had known him all his life?

The lifeboat had room for four, but Elijah still hadn't pulled me aboard. That was when I understood there had never been room for me in his heart.

I closed my eyes and let the freezing water pull me under.

Moments later, my soul drifted toward Elijah's lifeboat, as if drawn by some invisible force.

Kristen's frail hands clung to his shirt. "Eli… It hurts. I can't breathe."

Elijah clenched and unclenched his fists at the sight of her pale, tear-streaked face.

Kristen was eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison. To reduce her time, she went back to her old tricks. Day after day, she wore that same pitiful look, hoping to gain the guards' sympathy. Her cellmate, however, was nothing like Elijah. The woman had no patience for Kristen's feigned helplessness. More than once, she threw Kristen to the ground, humiliating her and beating her senseless. As the days passed, the hatred in Kristen's eyes grew sharper. One night, she lunged onto her cellmate's bunk, clamping her hands over the woman's mouth and nose. But her cellmate overpowered her, and Kristen's head struck the bed frame. Just like that, she died on impact.Meanwhile, Elijah had his captain's license revoked after the accident. Still, the company had no intention of giving up on such a gifted captain.Yet, whenever he stepped onto the bridge as an assistant, he would fixate on the red dot on his phone. Then, he'd steer the ship straight toward the open sea. After repeated inc

Suddenly, Elijah shouted, "The dashcam! The one on the captain's seat!"His eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, as if he had found a lifeline. It was a secret only he and I knew. When Elijah first started working at sea, I'd constantly pester him to tell me about the strange and wondrous things he encountered. But voyages were often dangerous, and he couldn't always reply to my messages. So, he installed a small dashcam on the captain's seat to capture bits and pieces of his time at sea. "Gwen, this way, you'll always be with me. You can watch the sights along with me," he had said. And that was what we did. Though we were miles apart, we watched the sunrise and sunset together, counted the stars, and planned our future. Unable to contain his grief, Elijah ran a trembling hand through his messy hair and opened the saved footage on his laptop. At first, everything in the captain's cabin seemed calm. He could even see seagulls gliding over the blue sea outside. Out of nowhere

Grief washed over me as I closed my eyes. I hadn't wanted Elijah to find out. I placed a hand over my flat stomach and whispered an apology to the baby I had lost. It was all because I had loved the wrong man. Otherwise, they might have had the chance to see this world. I thought Elijah wouldn't care. To my surprise, he bolted out of the hospital like a madman. He sped through the city, running one red light after another until he reached our house. Then, in a panic, he rushed to the nightstand beside our bed. After every voyage, I'd leave a gift for him in that drawer. Sometimes, it was a lucky charm engraved with the words "safe travels". Other times, it was a pressed yellow leaf from the fall season he missed while he was gone. Elijah's hands trembled as he opened the drawer. This time, the gift waiting for him was a neatly folded ultrasound scan and a sparkling diamond ring. The ring had a unique design. It was the very one I had stopped to admire for a long time during

Elijah jolted upright and grabbed his phone to call Oscar. His words tumbled out. "Quick! Track this location and find her! Now!""Captain, t-this location… W-Why is it…"On the other end of the line, Oscar's voice trembled with fear, his words breaking off mid-sentence. "What about it?" Elijah roared. Panic surged through him, his anger blazing. "I told you to find her. Just do it! Stop wasting time!"Oscar started to say something else, but Elijah cut him off sharply. "I'm ordering you to find her now!" he commanded through gritted teeth, each syllable deliberate. Elijah kicked the nightstand in frustration, sending the glass on it crashing to the floor. Startled by the noise, Kristen stirred from sleep. When she saw how anxious he was, she quickly sat up and reached for his hand. "What is it, Eli? Did Gwen start another fight with you?" she asked.Elijah took a deep breath, trying to steady his racing heart. "The tracker says she might still be out at sea."Kristen co

All at once, the air in the room grew heavy with tension. After a brief silence, Elijah said, "That's impossible. She has to be on one of the lifeboats. Look again, or contact any nearby vessels. Maybe she was rescued by passing fishermen.""Captain, I've already checked several times. There isn't a single person named Gwendolyn Clark on any of the lifeboats. Besides, there are sharks in these waters. No fisherman would risk coming this far out," Oscar replied.Frustrated, Elijah ran a hand through his hair. "You didn't search carefully enough! Get the entire rescue team to look again!""But the ship went down miles from shore, and the waves are rough," Oscar answered, his voice trembling. "It's past midnight now. Even if we find her, she's probably already—""Shut up!" Elijah shot to his feet and snapped, "She'll be fine!"A beat later, he drew in a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. "Send me the coordinates of all the rescue vessels. I'll find her myself."Having said

I drifted through the hospital corridor, watching Elijah shift restlessly outside the examination room. He furrowed his brow and kept checking his watch. Suddenly, the door swung open, and a nurse wheeled Kristen out of the room. Elijah rushed toward her. "She's still very weak and needs plenty of rest," the nurse stated. Elijah nodded in acknowledgment. Then, he took Kristen's hand, his voice full of concern as he asked, "How are you feeling? Are you hurting anywhere else?"Kristen shook her head. She looked so fragile, like she could shatter at the slightest touch. "I'm so cold…"Elijah quickly pulled the blanket higher over her chest before touching her forehead. "Does anything else hurt? Do you want some water?"She pressed her lips together as tears welled up in her eyes. "Eli… I was so scared. I thought I'd never see you again."He gently pulled her into his arms, saying, "Hey, don't be silly. I'm right here. I'll always be with you."I watched them with cold detachmen
