Chapter 3

Penulis: Maroon Cypress
Someone said, "Lucas, you're a lucky man. Not only is your girlfriend a top student, but she also knows when to spend and when to save. You'd better cherish her."

Lucas basked in the praise, visibly pleased with himself.

I'd fallen for him back then because I thought we were the same kind of person—someone practical who understood how to live within their means. I thought I'd found someone on my wavelength.

Turned out he was just vain and spineless, more than happy to live off others.

I deliberately sat farther away from him, but he kept drifting back, sticking close no matter what. When the meal ended, he even insisted on walking me back and asked to spend time alone together.

Joyce, meanwhile, grew increasingly unhappy as everyone crowded around me and ignored her.

She leaned toward Lucas and sneered, "Your girlfriend's pretty scheming, huh? She's plain-looking, but she sure knows how to throw money around. You're going to suffer for it sooner or later."

For once, Lucas only brushed Joyce off with a half-hearted response before insisting on taking me back to the dorm.

I knew it wasn't because he'd suddenly grown fond of me. He had his eye on the tens of thousands of dollars that had just landed in my bank account.

Back in the dorm, my thoughts were still a tangled mess.

Even though I'd survived this time around and avoided being ostracized, I still hadn't figured out how Joyce's curse worked.

She could drain my balance at any time. Worse, she could drain my life.

At least 30 thousand dollars had just come in. Joyce probably wouldn't burn through it that fast.

With that in mind, I grabbed my towel and stood to get ready for bed.

The moment I rose, a crushing tightness seized my throat. My legs gave out, and I dropped straight to my knees.

Instinctively, I glanced at my phone.

That was when I saw that my bank account had been emptied.

Before my roommates could help me up, Joyce had already rushed in. She told them to rest and insisted on taking me to the hospital herself.

I wanted to refuse, but the suffocating pressure in my throat left me unable to make a single sound.

My roommates thought Joyce was kind. Even the nurse remarked how fortunate I was to have such a beautiful, caring friend.

Listening to that, all I felt was fury.

Lucas arrived and immediately started yelling at me. "The doctor says there's nothing wrong with you! Why are you pretending to be sick? Do you have any idea how much a hospital visit costs?"

He stared at the bill, his brow deeply furrowed.

He had no intention of paying for me. As long as he could claim I was faking it, he could ask me for the money without shame.

Joyce gave him her card and said, "Take my card. We're classmates, so I can't possibly sit by and do nothing."

I reached out to stop him, but it was useless.

Lucas glared at me. "It's not even your money. What are you getting worked up for? Poor people really are nothing but trouble."

Soon, only Joyce and I were left in the ward.

She leaned down and whispered in my ear, "You shouldn't have stolen my spotlight. This is your punishment. Melanie, your family is really dirt poor.

"I just bought washing machines for every dorm and paid one thousand dollars in electricity for each. And that's enough to start draining your life? Don't panic. You're not dying yet, and what you're feeling is just temporary."

As soon as she finished speaking, the pressure around my throat eased.

I grabbed her by the collar. "What exactly is going on?"

Joyce smiled. "I thought you'd get on your knees and beg for mercy."

She pushed my hand away and straightened up, looking down at me with open disdain. "Melanie, you're destined to be nothing but a tool for me. Once you're ruined and dead, everything you have will be mine."

She left the ward, leaving me completely lost.

Once I was dead, there'd be nothing left to take.

So what exactly was she after?

With my bank balance wiped clean, my body was growing weaker by the minute. No matter how hard I worked, I couldn't earn money faster than Joyce could spend it.

I hated her so much that I wanted to kill her outright. But with my current condition, I wouldn't even be able to hurt her before she finished me off.

Just as I was at my wits' end, I spotted the registration for the closed-door Eddish competition.

During the competition, all participants would be confined together. If Joyce couldn't leave, she couldn't spend money.

And if I could win the prize money, I might finally make up what I'd lost.

  • My Card, Her Regret: Reborn For Revenge   Chapter 10

After that incident, Joyce's reputation on campus was utterly destroyed. That wasn't all. She had used her own nude photos as collateral for her online loans, and when she failed to repay them, the images spread across the entire campus.Lucas finally realized he had backed the wrong horse. He tried to reconcile with me several times, but my biological parents' bodyguards showed him the door each time.It wasn't long before Joyce disappeared from the campus entirely. Some said she was too afraid to show up because she had been attacked by classmates seeking revenge, others claimed she fled to Atrusia to escape debt, while a few whispered she'd been crippled.Rumors swirled, and no one knew which version, if any, was true.Lucas, like before, still waited outside the campus after classes. Seeing me, he said, "Mel, Joyce isn't coming back. No one's standing in our way anymore. You have to forgive me now."Jeremy Brown, the infamous tough guy on campus, landed a sharp kick on Lucas'

Joyce placed a freshly prepared set of documents in front of me.She told me that even if I had discovered everything, I would still be forced down the same path. As long as she had a way to make the Stone family acknowledge her, then I, the real daughter, would disappear from this world immediately. Those were the system's rules. After Joyce and Lucas announced my impending death, they linked arms and left the abandoned factory. As the last light slipped from the sky, the anxiety on my face dissolved.Joyce was still lost in her grand illusion of replacing me, completely unaware that the real paternity test had long since been delivered to the Stone family.By nightfall, people from the Stone family had arrived at the abandoned factory themselves and rescued me.Joyce, however, remained utterly convinced she was destined to become the Stone family heiress. She spent without restraint, desperate to maintain her image. To reassure our classmates, she used the money from the onli

The moment Lucas said that, several people showed looks of open contempt.Lucas was still technically my boyfriend. No matter how bad things had gotten between us, we had not officially broken up yet.Flirting openly with Joyce was one thing. But at a moment like this, he actually tried to make me foot the bill for Joyce's medical expenses.I shrugged, calm and unbothered. "I don't have any money. Everyone here knows that. I can't afford the medical bills."Lucas was too busy thinking about how to cover the medical bills to pay any real attention to Joyce.I watched as she slowly slid from his arms, her head wobbling dangerously close to the floor. She could no longer keep up the act. With a soft groan, she opened her eyes, and in an instant, everyone surrounded her.Joyce leaned weakly against Lucas, her voice dripping with fragility. "I feel awful. I need a proper checkup. Here, take my card. The password is…"She lowered her voice at the end of the sentence, careful not to

One of my classmates said, "This is a huge auction house, and you can't even process a payment? Our friend is the heiress of the Stone family. Do you think she'd stiff you over pocket change?"The attendant, clearly frustrated at being rushed, switched the card reader to voice mode.A clear beep sounded for everyone to hear. The card was declined for insufficient funds.Laughter rippled through the auction house."Look at this. A bunch of students pretending to be rich, flashing their paddles left and right, and it turns out they don't even have a dime.""Don't they know that if you win a bid and can't pay, you're still hit with a 20% penalty?"My classmates were young and easily rattled. They flushed, then went pale. Some of them were already on edge. Some even glared at Joyce, questioning why she hadn't just used a bank card with enough funds.Just as one of them reached toward Joyce, Lucas smacked their hand. "Ten million dollars is nothing to a wealthy heiress like her. Obv

Lucas panicked when I turned him down.Through the receiver, I could hear another woman beside him. Her voice was low, but I recognized it immediately. It was Joyce. They whispered back and forth for a long time, their voices sharpening, on the verge of an argument.Only then did I speak, slow and measured. "Two days. I'll be back in two days."Lucas sounded smug again. "I knew you couldn't leave me. Stop throwing tantrums from now on. If I ever really walk away, you'll regret it when it's already too late."This ridiculous man was already clinging to Joyce, yet he still had the nerve to play mind games with me.But this was perfect. Only if he tied himself completely to Joyce could those two despicable people drag each other straight to ruin.I had just hung up when I saw Lucas send a text into the class group chat.It read, "Joyce has fully recovered. In two days, she's treating everyone at an auction and letting us bid freely."The group chat went wild, and as usual, everyo

I hadn't even finished my sentence when shouting broke out on the other end of the line."Now that Joyce isn't well, are we still going to the auction or not? I bought a dress just for today. It cost me several hundred dollars!""I woke up early to do my makeup. Was that all for nothing?""Didn't Melanie fake it before? What if Joyce is faking it, too?"Whispers and complaints piled up, low but relentless.I couldn't help laughing. Joyce's influence had always been built on money. Once the money stopped flowing, her so-called prestige crumbled just as fast. The class was already starting to doubt her.Everyone, except Lucas. He suddenly shouted over the noise, "What nonsense are you talking about? Joyce's just not feeling well! Once she recovers, everything she promised still stands."Her family is loaded. Do you think she minds spending that tiny amount of money? She's the eldest daughter of the Stone family, the richest in the country!"My brows twitched. The Stone family?
