CATHERINE

The Morning came grey through the curtains while I was still on the hallway floor where I'd spent the whole night, my back against the cold wall with knees drawn to my chest like a woman half my age.

Sera found me first, bare feet padding soft against the floorboards, sleep still thick in her voice. "Mummy? Why are you on the floor?"

"I was just resting, baby." I pulled her into my lap, breathing in the warm, familiar smell of her hair, letting it anchor me the way it always did.

DOMINIC "Get out, Daniel."Daniel stopped beside my desk, the folder still tucked beneath his arm."Sir, I think you should hear the rest of what I found before—""Did I ask for your opinion?"His lips pressed together."No, sir.""Then leave."He placed the folder on my desk and took a step back."I'll coordinate with Marcus. We'll get you the information you requested.""See that you do."Daniel turned towards the door."One more thing, sir."I lifted my eyes.He hesitated. "You haven't slept properly in days. Perhaps you should take a break before—""Get. Out."He didn't argue again. The door shut behind him.I stood still for a moment, staring at the empty space where he had been. Then I swept the folder off my desk.Papers scattered across the floor."Damn it!"I dragged both hands through my hair and began pacing.Catherine.I stopped beside the window."Why didn't you come back?" I whispered. The city stretched beneath me, but I barely saw it.I remembered her face at the gala

CATHERINE “Tell them I'm not interested.”My assistant stood in front of my desk, holding her notepad.“Should I tell them you're unavailable, ma'am?”“No. Tell them I have no interest in attending.”She nodded and turned toward the door.“Wait.”She stopped.“Did they say who sent the invitation?”“No, ma'am. They only said it was a family invitation.”I leaned back in my chair.A family dinner. After everything that had happened, they expected me to sit around a table with people who had once watched me struggle in that house?I shook my head.“Send a reply.”“Yes, ma'am.”She left.I stared at the documents on my desk, but the words refused to make sense. My mind kept returning to Dominic’s .The Dominic I remembered would never have allowed anyone to challenge his authority in a room full of executives. He always wanted the final word.Perhaps he was trying to impress me.Well, he was wasting his time.My phone rang.Rachel.I answered. “Hello?”“Catherine, I just received the re

Dominic's “Stop staring at the door, Dominic. She is not coming back through it.”I spun around so quickly that the glass in my hand slipped and shattered against the floor. My mother's voice.I stared at the woman standing beside the fireplace. She wore the same blue dress she had been buried in, her dark hair resting neatly on her shoulders. Her face was gentle, but her eyes held the disappointment I knew so well.“Mother?”She folded her arms. “How many times must I tell you to stop looking so miserable?”I swallowed hard and glanced at the empty doorway. She was there again. My dead mother.I knew she wasn't real. The doctors had explained what was happening to me, but knowing something didn't make it disappear. Since losing Catherine, my mind had found strange ways to bring back the people I missed. Sometimes I heard my mother's voice. Sometimes I saw her sitting in my study, watching me work but tonight, she appeared in the middle of my living room. And she had chosen to speak

CATHERINE I had read the same paragraph five times, and I still couldn't remember a single word. The clock on my bedside table showed 2:17 a.m. My laptop glowed in front of me, surrounded by financial reports, handwritten notes, and empty coffee cups.In a few hours, I would face the board and fight to keep my position. Jasmine intended to make sure I never walked out of that room with it.I rubbed my tired eyes and returned to the documents on my screen."No," I whispered. "Not this time."Jasmine had spent weeks building a case against me. Suspicious transactions, questionable approvals, missing documents, everything had been arranged to make me look guilty of financial misconduct. Her strategy was simple. Make the board doubt my integrity, demand my suspension, and ensure I couldn't investigate what was happening behind the scenes.Unfortunately for her, she had made one mistake. She had underestimated me.Initially, I had focused on the transactions highlighted in her report. The

CATHERINEFor several minutes, I could not move.My father's letter lay on the desk in front of me. His handwriting was unmistakable. I had seen it on birthday cards, school forms, and the notes he used to leave beside my breakfast when I was a child. But this letter was different. If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who offers to protect my daughter. And beneath it was one name.Jasmine Lockwood.Three days before his fatal accident.I pressed my fingers against my lips, trying to hold back the storm rising inside me.My father knew something was wrong. He had known enough to write that warning. Yet he had never told me.Why?Had he wanted to protect me? Or had someone stopped him before he could explain? My phone rang.I looked at the screen. Adrian.I answered immediately.“Are you still at the office?” he asked.“Yes.”“Good. Stay there for now. I’m on my way.”“Adrian, I need you to listen to me. I found something about my father.”His voice changed. “What did you

CATHERINEThe woman who wanted to take my company from me was standing outside my office, holding a gift bag for my children.Jasmine smiled as if she had come to celebrate my success, not destroy it.“Catherine, darling,” she said, opening her arms. “Look at you. You look exhausted.”I stayed behind my desk.“Why are you here, Jasmine?”Her smile did not change. She placed the gift bag on a chair and glanced around my office. Her eyes paused on the stack of financial records beside my laptop.“I heard about the trouble with your company. I was worried about you.”“Then you must have heard that I am handling it.”“Of course.” She pulled out a chair and sat down without asking. “But even strong women need help sometimes.”I looked at the bag.“What is that?”“Something for the children. I saw the little dresses and toys and thought of them.” Her face softened. “How are my darlings?”“They are fine.”“Have they been asking about their father?”My fingers tightened around my pen. There
