Chapter 1

Author: Hello Brain
On Valentine's Day, I waited outside the mall for my husband, Michael Graham, for two hours.

The rain got heavier and heavier, but he never showed up.

Our three-year-old daughter, Bella Graham, was curled up in my arms. She looked up at me and whispered, "Mommy, does Daddy not want us anymore?"

My heart ached, but I smiled and reassured her.

"Daddy's working late. He'll come home when he's done."

Just then, a message from Michel appeared on my phone.

"Something came up. I can't pick you up. Take a cab home."

That was it. He didn't even wish me a happy Valentine's Day.

I called him. The phone rang for a long time before he finally answered.

There was a lot of background noise. Then, I heard a woman laughing. "Michael, you said you'd spend the night with me…"

The call ended before she could finish.

I stared at the dark screen. Whatever hope I had left was gone.

For the four years we've been married, I've told myself that his work comes first.

He'd forgotten our anniversary before, and I'd let it go.

Yet, he did it again. Today was our wedding anniversary, and he'd promised to come pick up Bella and me.

Bella wiped the rain from my face with her tiny hand.

"Don't cry, Mommy."

That's when I realized I was crying.

Not wanting to stand in the pouring rain with Bella while waiting for a ride, I called my brother, Owen Sinclair.

The moment he heard that I'd been left outside the mall, his voice turned cold. "Don't move. I'll be there in ten minutes."

12 minutes later, a black Bentley pulled up in front of us.

Owen had come without his driver. He got out with an umbrella and wrapped his coat around Bella.

"Where's Michael?"

"Working late."

He scoffed. "He's working late on Valentine's Day and leaving his family out in the rain. What a guy."

"Come on, don't start."

I carried Bella into the car. I didn't want to argue with him in front of her.

Owen glanced at me through the rearview mirror but didn't say anything else.

Instead of taking us home, he drove straight to a restaurant.

"Mom and Dad wanted me to bring you home for dinner. Since you refused, why not have dinner with me instead?"

I knew he was still angry that I'd kept my marriage a secret, so I nodded.

Four years ago, I'd gone against my family's wishes and married Michael.

To prove that I wasn't after his money, I'd hidden the fact that I was the daughter of the Sinclair family. I didn't even let my parents or brother attend the wedding.

I thought that if we were serious about building a life together, my background wouldn't matter.

In hindsight, I was too naive.

"He's just here to see you."Michael's face lost some color when he heard me.He used to care about how other people saw him.Now he was standing in the Sinclair residence's living room, facing the in-laws he'd once thought were nothing more than poor relatives. He didn't even dare look up.My father didn't yell at him.My mother didn't give him a hard time either. They simply sat nearby and watched him talk to Bella.Michael took out a gift box and held it out to her. "Bella, I got you this."Bella didn't take the gift."What is it?""The newest kids' tablet.""Mommy says I'm not allowed to play on the tablet all the time.""Then, you can play with it when she's not looking. I won't tell her."Bella immediately

Michael went to see Lorraine, but she refused to let him in."You've already been fired. What are you doing here?"Michael stood outside the door as he stared at her in disbelief. "You sent those photos to Zoey, didn't you?"Lorraine ran a hand through her hair. There wasn't a trace of guilt on her face."So what if I did?""You ruined me.""That's because you weren't good enough," she spat. Her tone was so cold that she seemed like a completely different person. She leaned against the doorframe. "You told me Zoey was just a stay-at-home mom with nothing. You said that if I stayed with you, we'd eventually live in the Sinclair residence. But now?"Michael's face darkened.Lorraine chuckled."You can't even keep your house anymore."With that, she shut the door in his face.Michael stood outside for a long time. He had finally realized that he had nothing left. What happened to him no longer had anything to do with me.…I started taking over the family business again.M

After we left the courthouse, I stared out the car window without saying a word.Owen didn't press me. He simply turned off the music and let me sit in silence. As soon as we pulled up in front of the Sinclair residence, I saw Bella running toward us with her stuffed rabbit in her arms. "Mommy!"She was wearing a pink dress and had her hair tied into pigtails that bounced as she ran.The moment I opened the car door, she threw herself into my arms."Mommy, what took you so long?"I hugged her tightly. The faint scent of milk still lingered in her hair. I could feel my eyes sting. "I had something very important to take care of.""Are you done now?""I am."I lowered my head and kissed her forehead. "From now on, I won't let anyone who doesn't appreciate you take you away from me."Bella didn't understand what I meant. She just wrapped her arms around my neck and smiled."Does that mean you'll stay with me every day now?""Yeah.""Is Daddy coming too?"I fell silent for a

Michael stumbled backward and hit the wall. The color drained from Lorraine's face as she stared at me. "But you said your parents died years ago.""That's just what Michael told you. I never said they did."Michael lowered his eyes to the divorce papers in his hands. His fingers trembled uncontrollably. That was when it finally hit him.I had never needed him to survive. At 5:00 pm that afternoon, Owen got a phone call. His expression remained unchanged as he listened to the caller."What is it?" I asked."The board at Michael Technologies just voted to remove Michael as the CEO."I was shocked.Owen continued, "Sinclair Group has already started legal action over the breach of contract. The banks have also suspended their credit lines. Michael's been fired."I looked toward the courthouse entrance. Michael was still there. The confidence he'd had that morning was gone. His suit was wrinkled, and his face was ashen. He looked like someone had drained all his strength.Th

Three days later, Michael and I went to court.Owen and I arrived at the courthouse together. He was dressed in a black suit and was carrying a folder full of documents."Nervous?" he asked."Not at all.""Your palms are sweating."I looked down at my hands. "It's hot out."Owen didn't call me out on it. He simply handed me a bottle of water.Michael had arrived before us. Lorraine and Michael's lawyer was standing beside him.Lorraine was dressed modestly today. She wasn't wearing her usual heavy makeup. She was doing whatever she could to look innocent. The moment she saw me, she moved closer to Michael.Michael looked like he already knew how this was going to end."It's not too late to change your mind, Zoey.""I have a lot of regrets, but this isn't one of them."His expression darkened.Once the hearing began, Michael's lawyer presented their evidence first. The first piece was a photo of Owen and me outside the hospital. The second piece of evidence was a series

I had just left the apartment complex when my phone rang.It was a multimedia message from an unknown number.I opened the photos. Lorraine was wearing a black spaghetti-strap dress and was lying on a bed. Michael had his arms around her from behind. His face was pressed close to her ear. They were both barely dressed. The sign for the lounge at Michael Technologies was visible in the corner of the photo. The next photo showed Lorraine curled up in Michael's arms. They held up the diamond necklace together. Then, she sent me a message. "Michael says he'll be single again soon. You've been Mrs. Graham long enough. It's time to give that title to someone else."I stared at the photos. I wasn't all that angry. If anything, I felt relieved to finally have proof.I'd already asked Owen to get the security footage from the restaurant last night. The photos that Lorraine had sent me herself were exactly what I needed to prove that she and Michael were more than just coworkers.I re
