Chapter 8

ผู้เขียน: Anonymous
When the court announced the verdict, the whole room was eerily silent.

“Due to insufficient evidence, the defendant, Anna Miller, will be dismissed with a fine of fifty thousand dollars.”

The judge hit the gravel, and Sawyer stood up abruptly with a dark expression.

He stared furiously at Lucas, and it felt as though his anger could burn the whole place down.

“You don’t even care about your own daughter?”

Lucas remained seated without saying a word.

He had won.

The plans he had laid

It was drizzling in the cemetery. Sawyer was holding a black umbrella as he stood before mine and Gracie’s graves. He laid a bouquet of white roses down. “It’s finally over. Lucas’s dead.” The rain passed through my transparent soul and fell onto the newly engraved tombstone. [Here lies a good mother and her forever adorable little princess.]When Sawyer turned around and left, I suddenly saw a familiar figure nearby. Lucas’ soul stood underneath a tree. He was staring timidly in my direction. Gracie, who had finally found me, leapt down from my embrace and ran toward him. I did not move. When Lucas crouched down and extended his trembling hands to hug her, I walked over. “Mommy!” Gracie tugged on my shirt. “Daddy’s crying…” Lucas looked up as tears streamed down his face. He wanted to say something, but he could not make a sound. I looked at him and recalled the rainy day from a long time ago. He was sharing my umbrella, and his eyelashes were wet from the rai

Lucas was sentenced to death due to his multiple crimes, including homicide. Even more tragically, he was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. He could have applied for bail to get it treated, but he rejected it. He said that it was his penance. I floated on the ceiling of the prison hospital room and looked at Lucas as he curled up in bed. His hair had gone gray, and he was extremely thin. However, he was grabbing our wedding photo tightly. He was smiling so charmingly in the photo. In the photo, I was looking at him like a fool in love. “Joan… Gracie…” He was mumbling our names again. I saw him wilt over the course of three months. The cancer had ravaged his body, but something told me that it was not the cancer that killed him. It was his memories. Every time when he was throwing up, he was crying. Every time he was sleeping, he was calling out for Gracie. When he woke up in the middle of the night, he would reach out his hand toward the moon outside t

Lucas locked Anna in the basement. The air was cold and wet, and it smelt bloody and rotten. Lucas sat on a wooden chair and lightly tapped his fingers against the handle. He stared coldly at the woman who was curling up on the ground. Anna no longer looked human. All of her fingers were broken, and her fingertips were covered in thin needles. Blood had dried on her face, and her lips were cracked. Her voice sounded hoarse. Just like me in the past. “Lucas… I beg you… Please let me go…”Her desperate voice sounded like she had been through hell. Lucas was lost in thought for a while, then suddenly laughed. “Let you go?”He stood up and slowly walked toward Anna. His presence felt imposing. “Did you let Joan go?“Did you let Gracie go?”Anna was shaking, and her bloody tears streamed down her face. “I’m wrong… I know I’m wrong… I’m just too afraid… I don’t want to go to prison…”Lucas crouched down and grabbed her face, forcing her to look at him. “Are you a

When the court announced the verdict, the whole room was eerily silent. “Due to insufficient evidence, the defendant, Anna Miller, will be dismissed with a fine of fifty thousand dollars.”The judge hit the gravel, and Sawyer stood up abruptly with a dark expression. He stared furiously at Lucas, and it felt as though his anger could burn the whole place down. “You don’t even care about your own daughter?”Lucas remained seated without saying a word. He had won. The plans he had laid out for Anna had been perfect. But the truth was, he had lost completely. Outside the court, Anna rushed out happily and hugged him. “Lucas! We’ve won! I knew you’d help me!”Lucas pushed her away slowly and expressionlessly. Anna was momentarily stunned, then she smiled and said, “Why? Are you too tired? Let’s go, I’ll treat you…”“Anna, have you known that Gracie was my daughter for a long time?” Lucas’ voice was very soft, but it sounded like a sharp dagger. Anna felt as if her t

Lucas really could not abandon Anna. He had almost exhausted all of his network and resources to make sure Anna would come out unscathed. He hired the best team of lawyers and made sure the alibi and evidence were infallible. He even sent someone to contact the victim’s family as he wanted to pay them to shut up. However, weirdly, he could not seem to contact them. On the day of the court hearing, Lucas sat in the public gallery. He was so anxious that his fingernails dug into his palms. He stared at Anna, who was sitting at the defendant’s table. Her face was pale as she kept looking at him from time to time with expectation and reliance. Just like every other time when she caused problems, he was the one who picked up after her. The judge hit the gavel, and the court officially commenced. When the prosecutor presented the case, Lucas’ mind started to wander. He snapped back to attention when a name was suddenly announced. “The victim, Gracie Anderson.”His hear

After Lucas learned the truth, he stumbled back to his car. This was the first time I saw him so disheveled. He seemed like a zombie. He sat in the driver’s seat while trembling. He kept mumbling the same sentences. “Is Sawyer telling the truth?“Is… Joan really dead?“Is… Anna lying to me?”His brain was buzzing, as if something was tearing at his nerves. He could not breathe. At the same time, his cell phone suddenly started ringing. It was a call from Anna. He saw the name on his phone screen. His finger paused mid-air, and he did not answer. The call ended, and she called him again. When she called for the third time, he finally took a deep breath and answered the call. Anna sounded obviously anxious and upset over the call. “Lucas! Where have you been?“I was looking for you for half a day. Did you manage to get any updates on Joan’s whereabouts?”Lucas tried to talk, but his throat was dry. “Anna… Joan’s dead.” He was met with a sudden silence. Af
