Chapter 34

The King of Endless Night

The man stepped out of the shattered crystal as if he had merely awakened from a peaceful sleep.

Black fragments floated around him before dissolving into smoke.

His boots touched the stone floor without making a sound.

Yet every heartbeat in the chamber seemed to stop.

Kael felt an invisible weight pressing on his shoulders. Even breathing became difficult.

The stranger looked around slowly, studying the chamber with quiet curiosity.

"So much has changed," he murmured. "And yet... this place still remembers me."

His crimson eyes settled on Aldren.

The First Wolf King lowered his head.

"I failed."

The stranger smiled faintly.

"No, old friend. You simply ran out of time."

The words stunned Kael.

"You know each other?" he asked.

Aldren's expression was filled with regret.

"We were brothers."

Silence fell over the chamber.

Lyra blinked in disbelief.

"Brothers?"

Aldren nodded.

"Before there were kingdoms... before wolves and humans became enemies... we ruled together."

He looked at the man standing before them.

"His name was Caelan."

The stranger closed his eyes.

"It has been centuries since anyone called me that."

When he opened them again, the warmth was gone.

"The world now knows me by another name."

"The Shadow King."

Rowan stared at the ancient carvings surrounding the chamber.

One mural showed two silver wolves standing beneath the moon.

Another showed those same wolves facing each other across a battlefield.

"They were never enemies in the beginning," Rowan whispered.

Aldren nodded.

"We wanted the same future."

"A world where our people could live without fear."

"So what happened?" Lyra asked.

The Shadow King answered before Aldren could.

"Humans happened."

His voice carried neither anger nor sorrow.

Only certainty.

"They feared our strength."

"They hunted our children."

"They poisoned the rivers and burned our forests."

"I wanted to end the war before it destroyed us."

Aldren's jaw tightened.

"You wanted to destroy every human kingdom."

"They gave us no choice."

"There is always a choice," Aldren replied.

The Shadow King's eyes hardened.

"Mercy made you weak."

A low rumble echoed through the chamber.

Above them, pieces of the ceiling collapsed.

Dust drifted through the air like snow.

Far away, the howls of the Lost Legion filled the mountain.

The Shadow King smiled.

"They can feel me."

"They have waited faithfully."

He raised one hand.

The shadows creeping across the floor gathered around him like loyal servants.

Dark wolves formed from living darkness, their eyes glowing red.

They circled their king, growling softly.

Kael instinctively drew his sword.

The creatures turned toward him all at once.

Their eyes never blinked.

"They're not real wolves," Rowan whispered.

"They're made from shadow."

Without warning, one of the shadow wolves lunged.

Kael met it head-on.

His sword cut cleanly through its body.

The wolf dissolved into black smoke.

For a heartbeat, Kael thought he had won.

Then the smoke flowed back together.

The wolf stood again.

Untouched.

Another attacked.

Then another.

Soon a dozen shadow wolves surrounded Kael and Lyra.

They fought back-to-back, their movements perfectly synchronized.

Kael blocked snapping jaws while Lyra's silver claws tore through bodies of darkness.

But every enemy they defeated simply reformed.

"They can't be killed!" Kael shouted.

The Shadow King watched calmly.

"They are born from fear."

"As long as fear exists..."

"They will always return."

Lyra closed her eyes for a single moment.

She remembered her mother's words.

"A queen doesn't fight with anger."

"She fights with hope."

She opened her eyes.

Instead of attacking the wolves...

She lifted the Moon Crown resting on her brow.

Its silver light spread through the chamber like moonlight breaking through storm clouds.

The shadow wolves hesitated.

Their growls faded.

One by one...

They dissolved completely.

This time, they did not return.

For the first time, the Shadow King's calm expression changed.

A flicker of surprise crossed his face.

"The Moon Crown..."

"It still carries her blessing."

Lyra lowered her hand.

"I don't know who 'she' was."

"But I know this."

"I won't let you turn this world into darkness."

The Shadow King stared at her for a long moment.

Then he laughed quietly.

"You sound exactly like your ancestor."

Aldren's eyes widened.

"You know who she is?"

"I've known from the moment she entered this mountain."

The Shadow King pointed directly at Lyra.

"She is not simply the next Wolf Queen."

"She is the last descendant of Queen Selene..."

"The woman who imprisoned me a thousand years ago."

The chamber fell silent.

Lyra felt the blood drain from her face.

"My ancestor... sealed you?"

The Shadow King's smile grew colder.

"Yes."

"And this time..."

His crimson eyes locked onto hers.

"I intend to finish what she started."

A blast of black energy erupted from his body, racing toward Lyra like a tidal wave.

Kael threw himself in front of her—

The explosion swallowed them both.
