Chapter 24

The Third Trial

The chains groaned.

One...

Then another...

Then dozens snapped with deafening cracks.

Deep beneath the Shadow Prophet's fortress, a monstrous roar shook the earth. Even the Shadow Prophet took an unconscious step backward before forcing himself to smile.

"Wake up," he whispered. "Your queen has returned."

On the Isle of Eternal Wolves, the pillar of moonlight slowly faded.

The twelve Guardians remained kneeling before Ariana.

The Second Guardian, now in his human form, bowed his head.

"My name is Orion. I failed to protect you five hundred years ago."

Ariana gently placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then protect this world with me now."

Emotion flickered across Orion's face.

"It would be my greatest honor."

Kael watched quietly. For the first time, he realized Ariana no longer looked like the frightened woman who had entered his pack months ago.

She carried herself with quiet confidence.

Not because of the crown.

But because she finally believed in herself.

The Blood King noticed it too.

A faint smile crossed his lips.

"The Queen has truly returned."

Before anyone could speak again, the sky suddenly darkened.

The moon vanished behind thick black clouds.

A freezing wind swept across the island.

The twelve Guardians instantly rose to their feet.

"The Third Trial..." Orion whispered.

"It's beginning."

The silver ground beneath Ariana glowed with ancient runes.

A massive stone doorway slowly emerged from beneath the earth.

Unlike the beautiful Moon Temple, this door was scarred with claw marks and black stains.

Three ancient words appeared across its surface.

THE CAVERN OF REGRETS.

Kael frowned.

"What kind of trial is this?"

Orion answered quietly.

"The first trial tested her identity."

"The second tested her heart."

"The third..."

He looked toward Ariana.

"...will test her greatest fear."

The giant doors creaked open.

Cold darkness spilled from within.

It felt alive.

Ariana stepped forward.

"I'll go."

Kael caught her wrist.

"This time, I'm coming with you."

Orion shook his head.

"Only those whose souls are connected to the Queen may enter."

The Blood King raised an eyebrow.

"Then I suppose I qualify."

The Guardians exchanged uneasy glances.

"No," Orion said firmly.

"The cavern chooses."

Silver light surrounded the entrance.

It touched Ariana...

Then Kael.

The light ignored everyone else.

The Blood King gave a small, bitter laugh.

"So be it."

He looked directly at Kael.

"If she breaks..."

"Bring her back."

Kael nodded.

"I will."

Together, Ariana and Kael stepped into the darkness.

The stone doors slammed shut behind them.

Inside, there was no light.

No sound.

Only endless blackness.

Then, slowly, the darkness changed.

They were no longer standing in a cave.

They stood inside Kael's pack house.

It looked exactly as it had the day Ariana first arrived.

Pack members laughed cruelly as they stared at her.

"Look at the fat girl."

"She's too ugly to be Luna."

"Alpha Kael deserves someone beautiful."

Ariana's hands trembled.

"I thought I'd left this behind..."

Kael reached for her hand.

His fingers passed straight through hers.

He looked down in shock.

"I can't touch you."

A cold voice echoed around them.

"You are not here to change the past."

"You are here to face it."

The illusion continued.

Kael watched helplessly as his younger self ignored Ariana, treating her with cold indifference.

Pain crossed his face.

"I... really did that."

Ariana looked at him, sadness in her eyes.

"We were both different then."

Suddenly, the scene changed.

The pack house disappeared.

Now they stood in the burning Moon Palace from five hundred years ago.

Bodies lay everywhere.

Smoke filled the sky.

The Shadow Prophet, still wearing his silver mask, stood over the dying Moon Queen.

This time, Ariana saw something she had never remembered before.

Another figure stepped from the shadows.

The figure wore a hood, hiding their face.

The Shadow Prophet bowed respectfully.

"My master..."

"The Moon Queen is dead."

The hooded figure laughed softly.

"Excellent."

"Now the Blood King will carry the blame..."

"And the key will be reborn exactly as I planned."

Ariana's heart nearly stopped.

"The key?"

Before she could hear more, the hooded figure slowly turned toward her.

Although the face remained hidden beneath the hood...

Two glowing golden eyes stared directly at her.

The figure smiled.

"You were never meant to remember this."

With a wave of one hand, the illusion shattered into thousands of fragments.

The cavern trembled violently.

Ariana and Kael were thrown apart.

The same cold voice echoed once more.

"The final chamber awaits..."

"Only one of you may enter."
