Chapter 3

Author: Do Re Mi Fa
Applications would close in the next twenty minutes.

At that point, the door to the room was kicked open with a great crash.

Our school counsellor, Mitchell Frank, rushed in, sweating heavily.

He was in his fifties and was usually all smiles. Right then, he was supremely angry. He was clutching a stack of papers printed from the backend system tightly.

“Have you all gone nuts?”

Mr. Frank’s voice was distorted with rage. He rushed onto the stage and brought up the numbers from the backend system. He pointed at the screen, his hand shaking.

“All of you, all fifty-four of you have applied to Galaxy Technical College? Do you know what kind of colleges you can get into with your grades? You’re ruining your lives!”

A good number of my classmates lowered their heads in shame.

Mr. Frank took out his phone. “No, I have to call your parents immediately! You can still change your minds while there’s still time.”

“You can’t do that, Mr. Frank!”

Kenneth reacted immediately. He was like a wild beast as he lunged forward to grab Mr. Frank’s phone.

“What are you doing, Kenneth? Give me the phone back!” Mr. Frank was so enraged that he was shaking all over.

“I won’t!” Kenneth was infuriated. “Mr. Frank, you don’t know what things are like now! I thought you were trying to save us, but really, you’re just stopping us from getting rich!”

Silena ran over, shouting loudly, “That’s right, Mr. Frank. You’re too far behind the times! Do you want us to graduate from useless Ivy League schools and end up working as couriers?

“After signing this contract, we’re all going to get salaries of a million dollars once we graduate! Can you get us the same?”

Ivana led a few male classmates and rushed up to form a human wall, forcing Mr. Frank into a corner of the stage.

Mr. Frank looked at the students he had been shepherding for the past four years, his eyes filled with despair. “A-Alright, if you don’t want to change your choices, I’ll cut the Wi-Fi! I’ll cut the electricity!”

“Stop him! Don’t let him do it!” Kenneth roared.

At that critical moment, I walked out from my corner and blocked the path to the junction box.

“Give it up, Mr. Frank,” I said calmly as I looked at him. “We’re adults and should be responsible for our own choices. Kenneth is right. This is where the trend is going. Let us make our own choices. Even if we fail, it’s on us.”

My words sounded final and decisive.

My stand as the top performer in class became the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Mr. Frank stared at me dumbly, looking as though he had never known me at all.

He tried to speak for a long time but finally gave up, his hands falling to his sides. He looked like he had aged ten years in a blink.

“Alright.” After letting out a bitter laugh, Mr. Frank took two steps back. “I’m only trying to help you, but good advice isn’t always taken. Forget it. Just don’t regret this in the future.”

After saying that, Mr. Frank turned and walked out of the room, slamming the door shut.

At 5:00 p.m. on the dot, the application system officially closed.

Deafening cheers filled the room.

Kenneth looked overjoyed when he walked over to me. “You really helped make this happen, Georgia. Good job! If you hadn’t come forward, Mr. Frank would have ruined it for all of us.

“Once we start getting paid our million-dollar salaries, we’ll show Mr. Frank who was right!”

I nodded, smiling. “Great. I’ll be waiting for the day all of you come back in your fancy cars.”

With that, the Maybach slowly moved off, leaving the group of my ex-classmates howling in despair in the plaza. I could hear Kenneth’s agonized cry through the window. “You ruined our lives, Georgia! You knew it was a scam!”I did not look back. Leaning back into the comfortable leather car seat, I closed my eyes. To stop them from ruining their lives, I had nearly paid with my life in the previous timeline. I wondered why doing a good deed had ended up with me being splashed with hot oil and trampled. At that moment, I understood why. Some people could never be convinced of anything. They were too lost in fantasies of their own creation. Anyone who tried to wake them from it would be seen as an enemy. They would only learn their lesson once their mistakes ruined them.Three months later, I was in my corner office and watching the lights of the city outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. I picked up the coffee from my desk and took a sip. There was a news report playi

My words struck all of them like a blow.Caleb’s face went livid, while Virginia’s sobs cut off. Right then, Kenneth appeared from somewhere after finishing his shift. He looked enraged, like a cornered beast, as he led a few of our ex-classmates to surround me.“Don’t act all high and mighty, Georgia!” Kenneth yelled, pointing at me. This attracted the attention of many passersby.“Did you know back then that Galaxy Technical College was a scam? Did you know that it wasn’t accredited?”I did not respond to his questioning. I only looked at him quietly, smirking mockingly. My silent answer enraged them all. Their selfishness and inability to take responsibility for their own choices came to the fore in that instant. They self-righteously blamed me for all of their failures and suffering. “Why didn’t you stop us if you knew?” Silena shrieked as she climbed up from the ground. “You were the top of the class! Your words held weight! You could have done anything to stop us, e

Over the next few days, I got a front-row seat as my classmates suffered the consequences of their actions. By some strange series of events, these once arrogant people all showed up in my vicinity in the most inferior and wretched ways. The third afternoon after I started my job, I walked out of Startech Tower to get a salad from the diner across the street. When I got to the plaza on the way, I saw someone in a food delivery service’s uniform under the blazing sun. Because his delivery was late, he was being cursed out by the building’s security personnel. “Are you new? Don’t you know that this is a high-class office building? Delivery riders aren’t allowed into the lobby, got it? Do you think you can afford to pay for cleaning if you dirty the carpets?”The delivery rider was sweating hard as he kept trying to apologize. “I’m sorry, sir. I’m really sorry. My delivery is late, and I’ll get penalized for it. Please let me in…”I paused and glanced at that hunched, tanned guy

Ashamed and distraught, Kenneth cried like a baby throwing a tantrum. As he sobbed, he recounted the horrible experience that had been his life for the past four years in starts and stops. “It was a scam… It was all a scam…” Kenneth slapped himself as he said this. Galaxy Technical College was not even located in any big city. Instead, its campus was at an abandoned factory in a small, isolated town. The dorms were ramshackle huts made of corrugated steel and incapable of withstanding the elements. There were no libraries or laboratories. It did not even have a proper field. Its professors, who were supposed to be experts in AI, were all jobless drifters the college had found from somewhere. Lectures were nothing but sessions where the students would be locked in the classrooms to watch illegally obtained webinars. When school started, Kenneth had rushed over to the administration office to get his referral reward of 500,000 dollars. The office not only did not recogniz

Kenneth stared at me, the dirty rag in his hand falling with a splat on the floor. He squinted as he took in the professional-looking office wear I was wearing. Then, he saw the gold-trimmed access card I was wearing, the one that only belonged to the most powerful employees in the company. The card announced my position to the world: Chief engineer. “Georgia? Georgia Natale?”Kenneth rubbed his eyes hard. He looked like he had seen a ghost. “What… What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be jobless?”Johanna’s expression darkened. She scolded, “How could you speak to Ms. Natale this way? She is our new chief engineer, especially hired at a high salary! Watch your words!”“Chief engineer. You’re the new chief engineer?”Kenneth looked struck, and he was frozen in place. His lips trembled. His knees going weak, he plopped to the floor where he had just been cleaning up. “Excuse us, Ms. Wembley. I’d like to catch up with my ex-classmate,” I said levelly to Johanna. Once the

I went outside and signed to receive the package. The courier gave me a thick envelope made of good paper. The name and emblem of the college were printed boldly on the envelope. My mother was ecstatic at the news and posted the photo of the acceptance letter on her social media. Her social media account could be seen by several of my classmates’ parents. Before ten minutes passed, a screenshot of it was sent to the class group chat. The excitement in the group suddenly fell into silence. For three whole minutes, no one spoke. Then, the group chat exploded with even more frenetic, disdainful taunts. Kenneth sent a voice note that was a minute long. “I was wondering who got that! After everything, our class’ top scorer chickened out and applied to an Ivy League, it seems!“Good on you for doing that, Georgia! Who would have thought you would be so two-faced? You sneakily changed your application and applied to an Ivy League? What a coward!”Silena added her voice to the
