Eleanor gasped at her father’s harsh words. She opened her mouth to speak, but Archie squeezed her hand firmly, tugging her back slightly.

She glanced up at him and saw his cold gaze fixed squarely on Jackson.

“It matters not who I am. What matters most is that I love Eleanor with all my heart, and I am going to marry her.” Archie spoke in an authoritative tone that admitted no debate.

Eleanor stared at him in utter disbelief. The man spoke with such conviction, as though none of this were merely an act.

She noticed Jackson opening his mouth to object, but Samantha cut in before he could say a word.

“If you truly love each other, then of course you have our blessing,” Samantha said, looking directly at Eleanor. She then turned to Jackson, adding, “Right, darling?”

Eleanor narrowed her eyes. She knew for a fact that Samantha’s words did not come from a place of sincerity. Samantha was simply thrilled at the prospect of her stepping out of this house for good.

Even so, that was precisely what Eleanor wanted. She could no longer bear living under a roof where no one respected or wanted her.

Jackson’s expression turned even colder as he looked at Eleanor, letting out a harsh scoff. “Fine! If you want to get married, then go get married and take her out of this house!”

Eleanor’s fingers tightened around Archie’s hand. She had not anticipated Jackson giving her up so easily.

Perhaps she truly held no remaining value in his eyes now that Julian had broken off the engagement.

Besides, it was a blessing in disguise that her father had no idea who Archie was; this way, he couldn't exploit Archie’s influence for his own business gains.

“Very well. Since you have given your blessing, I expect you to act as a witness to our marriage. Today!” Archie stated with absolute conviction, his eyes unyielding.

Jackson clenched his fists over his thighs. He averted his gaze, releasing another heavy scoff.

“Once you walk out that door as a married woman, don't you dare think you can ever return to this house!”

Eleanor remained silent, staring at her father. Jackson’s words only solidified her resolve to leave.

“Gather your things. You're coming with me as soon as we have the marriage certificate,” Archie whispered with quiet intensity.

Eleanor nodded. She released Archie’s hand and headed toward her bedroom on the ground floor.

As Eleanor walked to her room, Iris—who had been silent until now—followed right behind her.

Without even knocking, Iris barged into Eleanor’s room and watched her stepsister pack.

“Only take what’s yours. Don’t you dare leave here after stealing anything,” Iris said sharply, driving home the point that Eleanor owned nothing of value in this house.

Eleanor remained quiet, ignoring Iris standing behind her.

Iris was merely a stepdaughter in this household, yet she acted as though she owned the place, treating Eleanor like a stray simply because Jackson always favored and shielded her.

“Don’t worry, I know my place. Unlike someone who puts on the airs of a princess after being picked up from the streets,” Eleanor retorted bitterly.

Iris gasped in shock at Eleanor’s bite. Incensed, she marched straight up to Eleanor.

Roughly grabbing Eleanor’s arm, she raised her hand and swung it across Eleanor’s face.

Slap!

The sharp crack of the slap echoed through the room. Eleanor’s cheek immediately burned hot and red from the strike.

“Just so you know, you are nobody! Your mother was nobody! My mother is the only woman Father ever loved. Remember that!” Iris spat, her glare filled with warning.

With that, Iris deliberately knocked Eleanor’s suitcase over, stepping heavily on a few pieces of Eleanor’s clothes scattered on the floor.

Eleanor stayed silent. She quickly gathered her clothes to avoid keeping Archie waiting any longer.

In the living room, Archie remained standing. His icy glare stayed fixed on Jackson, who didn't even dare to meet his eyes.

Momentarily, Archie saw Iris return to the living room with an irritated look on her face. His eyes narrowed as he watched Iris whispering grievances to Samantha.

Shortly after, his gaze shifted to Eleanor, who emerged dragging a small suitcase.

For the daughter of a fairly prominent family, was this truly the extent of her belongings?

Archie finally understood just how cast aside Eleanor was in this household. It made sense now why she had to work at his company, even though her family owned a sizable business of their own.

“Is that everything...?” Archie’s sentence cut off as his eyes caught the red mark on Eleanor’s left cheek.

Instantly, Archie’s gaze turned razor-sharp, cutting toward Iris sitting beside Samantha.

Looking back at Eleanor, he demanded in a low tone, “Who slapped you?”

Eleanor had not expected Archie to notice her cheek. But since this man had no real connection to her, there was no need to escalate Iris’s behavior in front of him.

“It’s nothing,” Eleanor replied softly. “Can we please leave now?” Her eyes turned pleading, as if the man before her were truly her ticket out of this prison without bars.

Archie gave a quiet nod. He intertwined his fingers with hers once more, but before leading Eleanor away, his dark eyes flashed dangerously in Iris’s direction.

Eleanor finally finished her last bite in a hurry. After tidying the food containers and leftover wrappers back into the paper bag, she let out a long breath."I'll be returning to my division now, sir," Eleanor announced first to take her leave.Noticing a subtle nod from Archie, she exhaled a sigh of relief and promptly exited his office.A wave of relief swept through her chest the moment her feet stepped outside Archie's office, having felt thoroughly intimidated the entire time she was in there.Eleanor quickly went to the elevator and headed down to the fifth floor where her division was located. Upon arriving, she walked down the corridor toward her cubicle in the planning division to resume her remaining tasks. However, just as she turned the corner near the room partition, Eleanor's steps came to a sudden halt as she saw who was standing directly in her path.Abigail was already standing there, arms crossed over her chest, pinning her with an icy, piercing glare."How marvelo

Eleanor clasped her hands tightly in her lap.She kept her knees together, sitting stiffly upright.Being inside the spacious, dark-toned executive office of the President Director made her intensely nervous.Forget moving around—even breathing normally felt exceedingly difficult for Eleanor. Her eyes stole an awkward glance toward the large executive desk in the corner of the room. There sat Archie, calmly settled in his high-backed chair, his fingers steadily flipping through page after page of important documents as if Eleanor's presence on the sofa didn't bother him in the slightest.Feeling the atmosphere around them becoming increasingly suffocating, Eleanor finally gathered the courage to speak up. "Mr. Richter..."Archie didn't answer. He didn't even shift his gaze away from the papers before him.Eleanor swallowed hard, trying to soothe her suddenly dry throat. "If... if the food arrives, may I take mine and eat at my own desk, sir? I feel uncomfortable staying here."Still,

Sam suppressed a chuckle at the unusually loud growl coming from Eleanor's stomach. However, he immediately lowered his head upon catching the sharp, icy glare Archie shot his way.Archie shifted his gaze straight back to Eleanor. His face remained expressionless as he looked at her hanging her head in shame."Sam," Archie said flatly, without glancing back at his assistant. "Buy lunch right now, then bring it directly to my office.""Understood, sir," Sam replied promptly.Eleanor snapped her head up, her eyes widening in surprise. Her embarrassment instantly gave way to confusion. Before she could process the order, Archie spoke again in his usual impassive tone."Follow me to my office," Archie instructed, locking eyes with Eleanor in a way that left no room for debate.Eleanor gasped, looking at Archie with clear shock on her face. "F-For what reason should I go to your office, Mr. Richter?"Her sudden question caused Sam—who had just turned to leave—to halt in his tracks. He glan

Eleanor wiped a bead of sweat from her brow with the back of her hand. She had just finished organizing the files Abigail had requested, sorting them meticulously by date and sequence.Glancing at the wall clock above the doorway, she saw the short hand had already passed one in the afternoon. The employee lunch hour had begun an hour ago.Taking a deep breath, Eleanor lifted the heavy stack of documents once more, her arms beginning to ache from the strain. She stepped out of the planning division toward the elevator, heading down to the archive storage room. When the elevator doors parted on the lower floor, Eleanor's steps felt heavy as she walked down the corridor toward the main archive room located at the bottom level of the building.Eleanor pushed open the heavy wooden door of the archive room with her free elbow. Inside the space lined with row upon row of metal cabinets, a middle-aged male staff member looked up at her."Excuse me. I'm returning these report files," Eleanor

Archie’s luxury car cut through the city streets as traffic began to build up.Inside the vehicle, a heavy silence lingered. Eleanor stared straight out the window, watching the soaring skyscraper of Richter Company gradually come into view in the distance. Her heart began to race once again as she pondered how she ought to conduct herself at the office later."Mr. Richter," Eleanor called out, breaking the silence, her voice exceptionally cautious.Archie kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "What is it?""Please drop me off by the side of the road near the bus stop right after that intersection, sir," Eleanor said, pointing toward a bus stop a few hundred meters before the company's main entrance.Archie briefly glanced over at her. "Why drop off there? We are heading to the same building.""In accordance with the contract draft we signed last night, sir," Eleanor explained, her voice low yet firm. "We agreed to keep our relationship a secret at the office. If any staff or employe

Eleanor twirled her fingers nervously in her lap, trying to suppress her overwhelming embarrassment. She kept her head down, not daring to look at Archie, who stood right in front of her."I'm sorry, Mr. Richter. I swear, I really didn't realize I was hugging you," Eleanor said softly, her voice barely audible above the rapid beating of her own heart.Archie stared down at Eleanor in silence. Finally, he sat up and swung his legs onto the floor.Standing up, he said, "Go wash up."Without looking back at her, Archie added, "Mother is likely waiting for us in the dining room. I don't like keeping her waiting for too long."Eleanor gave a few gentle nods, still not daring to make eye contact with him.She watched Archie's shadow move away from the bed, followed by the sound of the bathroom door shutting.Eleanor let out a soft sigh of relief, glad that Archie hadn't been angry over her unseemly behavior. She made a mental note to be far more careful from now on to avoid a similar incide
