Twenty minutes later. Cora drove out of her Manhattan townhouse. She would first drop Isabella at school before going to pick Lisa up at her house. She briefly looked towards her daughter who had her face pressed to the window looking at the passing scenery
"Isa..." She calls softly and Isabella turned her head looking at her mom, waiting with a smile to know what her mother wanted to say. Cora just smiled back and pat her lovingly on the head. What she was about to say was at the moments forgotten when she saw the joy that radiated from her daughter's bright smile.
Even though there are days that she felt like running away when the pressure of motherhood, coupled with taking care of the family business becomes too much for her to shoulder, Cora was still glad and proud of her eighteen years old self that decided to keep her child, even when her boyfriend had just ended their relationship and the pressure from friends to get an abortion was too much
Now each time she looked at her child and Isabella smiled up at her, there's this indescribable joy that would grip her heart during those times. She couldn't just imagine her life without her daughter in it.
Apart from being vivacious, mother and daughter looked nothing like each other. Cora was a beautiful woman with straight raven dark hair and grey eyes while Isabella was the complete opposite. She has striking features of blond hair and green eyes which was exactly like her father's
Someone once told Cora she and her daughter looked like day and night. People who don't really know them but have been seeing them together on different occasions sometimes wonder about their relationship with each other until they couldn't hold their curiosity in any longer and ask if they're truly mother and child. But when their questions were answered, they would still find it difficult to believe
"Mommy?" Isabella called after she has waited for quite some time and her mother was only smiling without saying anything
"Yes, sorry!" Cora's smile grew wider when her daughter's voice brought her out of her reverie. "I've arranged for the school bus to drop you at your aunty Lisa's house after school. Would you like to go with Ana to the park later after you are done with your homework?"
"Okay..." Isabella cheerfully agreed before going back to looking at the passing traffic outside the car window
After dropping Isabella off at school. Cora drove to Lisa's house to pick her up and found her already waiting outside her house.
"Hope you've not been waiting long? I'm so sorry for being late again." She said as soon as she got out of the car working towards where her cousin was standing. "Four months already in New York City and I'm barely used to the hustle and bustle of the city," Cora said apologetically to her cousin
"You will get used to it the way I did, don't worry about it," Lisa said before hugging Cora while saying good morning to each other
"Do you mind driving, please?" Cora pleadingly held her car keys out.
"Oh, alright! But you don't have to act like a cute puppy you know" Lisa said and they both laughed, as they got inside the car
The two girls sat in the car. Lisa was about to start the car when Cora's voice stopped her... "He's back!"
Lisa leaned back in the driver's seat, looking towards where Cora was seated massaging her temple with her eyes closed.
"Yeah, I saw it on the news the previous night. Are you okay though? You look worn out!" She asked, concern for Cora apparent on her face
"No!... No, I'm not okay!" Cora replied with a shake of her head. "But hopefully he won't stay long. Maybe he just came to visit his parents and would leave soon right? When he leaves then I can move on with my life without the fear of us running into each other?" She asked with a false smile
Lisa scoffed and looked at Cora as if she was talking nonsense. "What are you talking about? Did you even listen to the news or did you just listen to the one that suits you and zoned out afterward?" She asked Cora with a frown
Lisa was right. She didn't actually listen to the news. She just saw a video of him coming out of JFK airport while the newscaster was reporting... 'Heir to the Platinum & Silver Conglomerate was spotted in JFK'..." That was when she switched off the TV. She didn't wish to see his face, neither did she want to know any details about him.
"No!... I mean yes. He flew back into the country yesterday. There was a video of him coming out of JFK, so I just assumed he came for a visit since his whole life, I mean his company and family are in England. What else could there still be that I need to listen to?" Cora asked Lisa suspiciously like Lisa was deliberately withholding some vital information away from her
"Cora..." Lisa called softly closing her eyes for some seconds before opening them. "His whole life as you put it is no longer in England. It's here now." Lisa added and Cora immediately sat up straight, her eyes grew wider
"What do you mean?... I-I don't understand what you mean by... No longer in England... It's here now!?" Cora stammered "I'm afraid I wasn't really listening..."
Lisa sighed. It's not fun being the bearer of bad news she thought as she explained further to Cora
"According to the news the previous night. His wife had a long battle with some disease that I can't pronounce and finally gave up the ghost a month ago... To cut a long story short, he's back in America with his daughter to take his place at the head of the table since his dad is now retiring..."
Cora turned pale. "He's back in America to take his place because his father is retiring?" She repeated stupendously and slumped back in her seat suddenly feeling exhausted
"What am I going to do then?... I mean I can't just leave everything I planned and have achieved so far here and go back to Spain?"
"And why would you abandon everything and go back? He's living his life so why couldn't you live yours in peace. I never figured you as a coward Cora!" Lisa said in annoyance. She loved Isabella as if she was her own but couldn't help but despised her father for what he did to her Cora.
They all tried to warn her back then that, a man like him falling in love with a nobody was too good to be true but she wouldn't listen until be broke her heart. Even though Cora did her best to put on a brave face for everyone and pretended as if all was well, Lisa knew about the muffled cries every night. Now whether they are in the same city or not, he has no right to push her into hiding.
"Coward!? Really!?..." Cora said and rolled her eyes upward
"Then what is it? Why are you so afraid of him because this isn't the Corazon I know? You're seriously thinking of abandoning everything you've planned and worked for!? Really!?..." Lisa asked looking deeply into Cora's eyes like they were having a staring match of who would blink first. It was Cora who lowered her gaze first, at looked out of the window.
A thought suddenly occurred to Lisa and she narrowed her eyes towards Cora's back. "It's been seven years Corazone, tell me are you still pining after him!?" Lisa asked stiffly.
Cora sharply turned her head away from the window and looked at her cousin and best friend...
"What nonsense are you saying from your mouth, huh!? As you said, it's been seven fucking years! Do you think I've forgotten he dumped me for another woman!? Is it possible for me to still be in love with such an asshole!?" Cora shouted furiously before leaning back into her chair.
Then she said softly staring ahead at nothing in particular. "I'm scared! I'm scared because of Isabella! What if they meet somehow? They looked so much alike, even a dumb person would know he's her father. How would I explain him to her after I already told her, her father died!?
She might hate me! What if he wants to be in her life? I don't want him near me and my child but he's her father! Will I be able to prevent him from seeing her?" Cora asked, her eyes that were flashing with anger had tears in them at the same time. Those are my fears, Lisa! What do you suggest I do!?"
Lisa was the first to look away this time, staring out the window. God! This is so messed up!" She murmured
Cora leaned back in her seat with her eyes closed and thought more about the question Lisa asked her earlier; Was she still pining for Zachary King... She vehemently disagree then and thinking about it now she still disagreed. How could she still have feelings for a man that made a mockery of her love for him? A man that shamed her in front of her family and friends. No, she didn't have any feelings left for Zach King, instead, she hated him with passion.Even with the hatred Cora felt for Zach King, she still couldn't entirely forget about him, how would she be able to forget when her daughter was a constant reminder of her father with her blond hair, green eyes, and dimples. The only difference was Zach's aloofness while Isabella was as vivacious as her mother.Cora couldn't help it when her mind drifted off to the first time she set her eyes on Zach. Even after seven years of harboring hatr
Zach King's alarm sounded at 6 am as usual. He sat up in bed and looked around his bedroom.'She's not here today?" He thought to himself, amazed to see that Samantha, his six-year-old daughter was not in his room waiting for him to wake up as usual. 'Maybe she finally decided to stop watching over me.' He thought to himself and smiledSix months ago after her mom was finally moved to the hospital before her death, Zach would wake up to find Samantha staring down at him in bed. After three days of waking up to find her watching over him, he asked her if she was afraid of sleeping alone and she replied, no! She was just afraid the men that came to take her mother away would also come for him while she was sleeping.Zach felt pain for his daughter. He wished there was something to save his wife's life. If not for anything but his daughter's sake. There was nothing they could do as the terminal cancer that she had was already at its final stage. The
Cora and Lisa forgot about Zachary King in the meantime and went about the day's business. After her meetings, she visited her new branch building to check the work in progress. When she entered and saw how far they've gone with what used to be an old abandoned warehouse, She was proud of what they have achieved so far. The work on the building was almost done. Hopefully, they might be able to open for business by the end of the month. It was getting late in the afternoon when the two women finally decided to take a break and go for lunch, after which they can go shop for the baking and kitchen wares she would be using for her business. While shopping for the kitchen wares, Cora decided to call the babysitter so she could speak with Isabella. She knew they would be at the park right now and she wanted to be sure Isabella was having a great time at the park. However, she couldn't get the babysitter on the phone. So Cora left a message on her answering
"No Lisa, you don't have to follow me. You should stay here, in case they find a match for her, so you can immediately inform me!""Okay, but do you know where you're going? Do you have the address?" Lisa asked with concern towards the obviously disoriented Cora who was walking in hurried steps.Cora stopped mid strides when she remembered she had no idea where she was going. She sighed in frustration and looked pitifully at Lisa ``No I don't know where I'm going... You have it right?"Lisa nodded and gave Cora a quick, reassuring hug. "Everything will be okay, Corazon! Everything will be okay, so don't worry too much!" She pulled away from their hug and looked into Cora's eyes "Alright?" She asked and Cora nodded in reply"Okay go ahead, I'll send the address to your phone by the time you arrive at your car... Oh, the car keys!" She remembered she still had the keys and handed it o
Zach turned white on seeing the picture Cora placed in front of him. For some seconds, he just stares at the face of the girl that looks so much like Samantha they could pass for twins. If not for Cora and her father that were standing behind the girl in the picture, he would have thought Cora somehow stole one of Samantha's pictures so she could play some stupid pranks on him. With slightly shaky fingers he picked the photo up and looked at the girl closely. Even with the ridiculously big chef's hat she had on her head, her long blond hair was obvious as it cascaded over her shoulders, and her green eyes that were just like his and Samantha's were sparkling with happiness."Samantha!?" Zach heard his father whisper in question exactly what he was thinking. Indeed, he didn't need a DNA test to confirm to him that the girl in the picture was his daughter. The resemblance between them was so obvious even his father mistook her for
So hope you won't mind if I come by the hospital later today to check how Isabella's doing?" Ryan asked as he helped Cora climb into the helicopter."No of course not" Cora replied"Great, so I guess I'll see you later then. Take care." Ryan said and immediately started walking back towards Zach, meeting him halfway and they both walked back to the helicopter again."Her name is Isabella... I already sent some of her pictures that I copied from Corazon to your phone..."Yeah, thanks, man..." Zach repliedIt's too early for old man Mancini to find out anything about them for now, so don't think about the old fart, just concentrate on taking care of your girl.""Yeah... Please help take Samantha to your mom's... I'll call her tonight myself""Yeah sure," Ryan said as they arrived at the helicopter.
After their visiting time ended, the babysitter, Ana soon left for her house when Cora insisted she go home and take care of her own family. After she left, Cora and Lisa sat in the waiting area in front of the emergency room with their fingers intertwined, praying in their hearts and at the same time giving each other much-needed strength and support. Some minutes after, Zach arrived with Isabella's two doctors and some nurses. Cora immediately stood from her chair and ran to meet them halfway, closely followed by Lisa"Hi Zach" Lisa greeted and Zach gave her a curt nod in answer"Hey, how was the test? Is everything going to be okay?" Cora asked Zach. Even though she wasn't expecting him to answer her since he has been giving her hateful glares ever since they arrived at the hospital, she was surprised he answered."They will start the procedure as soon as they get her settled in a private an
"Yes exactly, I wasn't to blame," Cora repeated Lisa's words to herself"That wasn't even why I didn't tell him at first. After he broke up with me, I couldn't think straight. I was perplexed. I don't care about anything. I just wanted to climb into some hole, roll into a ball and die, you know.It took me a while before I could think about the life growing in me that I needed to take care. By then it wasn't necessary anymore. I mean his girlfriend was pregnant with him. Doesn't that mean the one I was carrying belonged to me?...""Yes Cora, I agreed with you hundred percent""Then why was he making it seem as if I did something bad to him?... How could he be that selfish, to only think about himself and not others? What kind of a man is that?"Everybody is entitled to their own opinion and how they choose to see somethings""Yes! Then why must he
