Chapter 3

Author: Tiny Verse
I let out a light scoff.

I'd lived with my mom overseas since I started high school. After that, I had continued my studies there and rarely returned to my home country. Hence, I had only come back this year after graduating to familiarize myself with the business at Dad's company.

Even the domestic media barely knew I existed, let alone these ordinary workers.

So, I pulled out my phone, found Dad's number, and called him right in front of everyone. The call rang for several long seconds before disconnecting.

Kaia couldn't stand it anymore and sneered, "You deliberately picked today because you knew Mr. Linden was away on a business trip and couldn't confront you in person. You just dialed some random number to fool us, didn't you?"

She glanced at the time on her watch and said impatiently, "Cut the act already. The people from the Securities and Exchange Commission will be here any minute. If I were you, I'd spend this time preparing your statement."

Anxiety welled up inside me. Even if I were innocent, once the people from the commission arrived, the resulting public attention would still damage the company.

I looked at my surroundings.

Then, an idea suddenly came to me.

I remembered that Dad's office was directly across from the records room. I didn't have the authority to access the surveillance footage from his office, but I could access the footage from the records room.

"You don't believe me, right? If so, I'll find the evidence and show you," I said.

I took the elevator straight to the IT department to retrieve the surveillance footage.

Alas, they immediately refused my request.

One of the staff said, "To access surveillance footage, you first have to submit a formal request. Once it's approved, you'll need to provide a written application signed by Mr. Linden before we can retrieve it."

It felt as though a bucket of cold water had been dumped over my head. I bit my lip, my expression tense.

Just then, I remembered that before I joined the company, Dad had given me a black box for emergencies. I quickly took it out and opened it, only to find that it contained the CEO's official seal.

I held up the seal for everyone to see and said clearly, word by word, "According to company policy, special emergencies can be processed through the expedited approval channel. The seal in my hand grants that authority."

The staff in the IT department hesitated for several seconds. Looks of uncertainty were written all over their faces.

I watched as one of the employees finally nodded in agreement.

But before he could do anything, a sharp pain shot through my wrist. At some point, Kaia had followed me upstairs. She slapped the seal out of my hand, sending it crashing to the floor.

The seal shattered into pieces instantly.

With her hands on her hips, she looked incredibly overbearing as she exclaimed, "How dare you forge Mr. Linden's official business seal? You've got some nerve, Yelena. Do you think this company belongs to your family? So the so-called evidence you were talking about was forgery?"

The staff in the IT department finally realized they'd been tricked.

Instantly, their expressions turned indignant. They should've known that a new employee who had only been with the company a short time couldn't possibly have their boss' official seal. They had almost lost their jobs because of it.

One of the IT staff said sternly, "Get out! Unauthorized personnel aren't allowed to interfere with our work."

My face darkened, and my tone grew even more grave. "You're done for, Kaia. You deliberately destroyed the company's official seal that holds the highest authority. Not only will you lose your job, but you'll also be held responsible."

Nevertheless, Kaia clearly didn't take my words seriously. "Are you done yet? How dare you try to fake having authority when our boss isn't around? You're the one who's about to lose everything."

I no longer had the energy or mood to argue with her. I could only watch helplessly as time ticked away.

Dad was away on a business trip. And once the people from the Securities and Exchange Commission arrived, the media would be reporting on it within half a day. As a consequence, the company's market value would inevitably suffer.

My face turned ashen, and my heart sank to my stomach little by little.

"Yelena, please forgive me this one time. They tricked me. Otherwise, with our friendship, how could I ever have wanted to hurt you? We joined the company together! We are colleagues!" Kaia shouted.Even at a time like this, she was still thinking about how to shift the blame onto someone else.Aaron's expression darkened. Furious that Kaia had turned on him, he began arguing with her on the spot.Listening to their exchange, I finally learned the whole story. Not only had Auva Tech bribed Kaia, but they had also planted Aaron in the commission long ago. It was clear they had planned this for a long time. They intended to use the rumors of adultery to create a scandal and destroy our company's reputation. That way, they could bring us down in one go.Dad lost his patience and made it known that he would sue Kaia on the grounds of malicious corporate sabotage before letting Henry arrest her. The head of Aaron's department in the Securities and Exchange Commission took him away, int

The moment I mentioned Auva Tech, every one of our workers gathered around gasped. The longtime employees all knew the name Auva Tech well. They had always been one of our company's direct competitors. Our companies produced similar products and had comparable brand recognition. However, over the past year or two, Auva Tech had stubbornly continued using outdated core technology. Hence, it had been steadily losing market share to our company. The CEO of Auva Tech had held a longstanding grudge against Dad. Not only had he repeatedly tried to sabotage us during bidding competitions, but he had also smeared our company in the media.Auva Tech had narrowly lost to us in the last bidding project. Even in this race to go public, it was still lagging behind our company. If Auva Tech had given Kaia this prohibited device, then this would no longer be a personal grudge. It had escalated into malicious corporate sabotage.I held up the brooch for everyone to see."If I remember correctly

Dad was right. No one had actually seen the actual census records that supposedly didn't have any information on my family. How could they be so certain that the information hadn't simply been relayed incorrectly?I let out a small sigh of relief. At the same time, I noticed beads of sweat forming on Aaron's forehead. In contrast to him, Kaia still looked completely calm and composed.A sense of unease crept into my heart.I watched as Henry Zeller, the police officer Dad had brought with him, searched for my information in the system once again. Once again, the family information section was still completely blank. According to the records, I was an orphan.Something was terribly wrong. The more I thought about it, the more horrifying it seemed to me. What had Kaia done to tamper with my records?Aaron visibly relaxed and let out a smug chuckle. "Are you satisfied now, Mr. Linden? We've checked everything that needed checking. If you have anything else to say, we can discuss

The moment I saw Dad, who had arrived just in time, relief washed over me.The officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission released me and picked up the birth certificate from the table to carefully peruse it.I watched as one of the officials—the same one who had been exchanging glances with Kaia—looked at the birth certificate and frowned. The undisguised contempt in his tone was unmistakable. "This certificate is obviously fake."The surrounding workers immediately gasped in shock."To think Mr. Linden went as far as forging a fake certificate for Yelena. Looks like they've really gone after the person he cares about most.""If they're going to this much trouble, they must have something to hide. I'm sure there's a lot more going on than we imagined.""That's upper management for you. They must be doing things far more immoral than we could ever imagine."The whispers went on incessantly, and the comments grew increasingly unpleasant.Dad pulled a long face and ba

Dad had built this company from scratch, starting with nothing, over the past 20 years. For the last two years, he'd worked himself to the bone trying to get it listed. To achieve that, he'd been constantly traveling all over the country. If we lost this opportunity, the next chance to start over might not come for another ten years.I stared at Kaia's smug face, my voice growing colder. "If I can prove my relationship with Mr. Linden, you'll withdraw the complaint, right?"She wanted proof of our relationship, right? I didn't have it at the company, but I had it at home.I stepped into the hallway again and called our housekeeper, Esther Brown.I instructed over the phone, "Esther, take a taxi and bring my social security card and driver's license to the company immediately."As soon as I hung up, I heard cries of astonishment coming from the lobby downstairs. A crowd had gathered around the large display screen. Many people were pointing at it and talking excitedly. Burst aft
