Chapter 1

For a moment, it felt as if someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over my head.

Before I could even process what I was looking at, a notification on my phone brought me back to reality. It was a text from Dad.

"Don't worry about me, Chase. I'm fine. A couple of painkiller shots will do the trick."

I clamped a hand over my mouth as my heart pounded painfully against my ribs.

My eyes fell on the bank records showing the massive deductions over the past few months.

I'd thought Dad had finally started spending money on himself instead of pinching every penny for my sake. But it turned out that someone else had been spending his money.

The moment I got home, I threw the bank statement onto the coffee table.

"Why is my dad's retirement fund under James's name?"

"All my savings are tied up in a company project right now. I can't access them," Shannon Stewart said after freezing for a split second.

She added, "Putting Mr. Gardner Senior's name on the fund was just a precaution in case of emergencies. You know his health isn't great. Something could happen to him at any time. Once the project pays out, I'll give you back three times the amount."

Her favoritism was as blatant as ever.

She had assigned James Gardner, Sean Gardner's father, a custom ringtone. She would pick up her phone even if he called in the middle of the night.

Dad's chronic condition flared up at least three times a year, yet she never once asked how he was doing.

Meanwhile, messages from the hospital kept coming, each one more urgent than the last. They warned that Dad's condition was critical.

"I need the money now."

My eyes burned as I stared at her. My teeth chattered with rage.

Shannon looked at me like I was being completely unreasonable. Her eyes were filled with blatant disgust.

At some point, Sean had walked in. He looked at me innocently. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Chase. My dad just booked a luxury world tour. It covers all three of us, so this money is barely enough."

He showed me the account balance. There were only 54 dollars and 82 cents left.

I had worked myself to the bone just to earn that one million. Now, that was all that remained.

My throat tightened as I glared at Shannon. "My dad just went into surgery. He needs the money right now. You—"

"That's enough," she cut me off impatiently. "Are you making things up over that little money? I'll write you an IOU. I'll pay you back three million in a month."

After a few quick strokes of her pen, she tossed the handwritten note at me as though it could instantly erase all the favoritism she had shown.

Just then, James walked in carrying shopping bags filled with designer brands. He cheerfully bragged about everything he had bought.

Every cent he had spent came from the money I had been saving to take care of my own dad.

Last month, I bought Dad a 300-dollar jacket. He left it hanging in the closet because he couldn't bear to wear it. Whenever he went out, he still wore the same faded plaid shirt he had had for years.

I pulled up my contacts, ready to borrow money from anyone who would help. Suddenly, my phone buzzed.

It was a message from the hospital informing me of Dad's death.

A deafening ringing filled my ears, and my vision blurred.

I stood in the doorway, clenching the cold IOU so tightly in my fist that I crumpled it into a ball. I stared at the three of them cheerfully chatting in the living room as I made my decision.

I wasn't going back.

"Chase, I'm sorry. I really am," Sean said. Before I could react, he dropped to his knees in front of me. "Please forgive me. If you don't, Shannon won't pay for my dad's treatment. He's really in danger now."His voice was raw from crying. The old me would've softened. I would've helped them no matter what they'd done to me. But Dad had died because of them. I wasn't that forgiving anymore.I stood there without the slightest hint of sympathy. "From what I know, you knew my dad desperately needed that money. That's why you made sure to spend every cent of the retirement fund, didn't you?"Sean looked away, and I caught his gaze. The hatred I'd buried for so long finally came rushing back.He grabbed the hem of my pants and looked up at me with tear-filled eyes. "I've realized what I did was wrong now. I'm apologizing to you sincerely. Please forgive me! Shannon said if you don't forgive me, she won't give us the money for my dad's treatment. I won't be able to go on if he dies

By the time I arrived at my new company overseas, everything had already been arranged. The pay was three times what I'd been making before. It reminded me of all the money I'd once saved by denying myself things. I'd wanted to give Dad a better life, but he was gone now. While I was organizing some documents, my phone buzzed. Every cent of the million-dollar retirement fund had been returned. There were another two million on top of that. The transfer note read, "I'll repay everything I owe you twice over. Please come back."I knew Shannon was the one who sent it. She'd never used the word "please" with me before. Maybe she had learned that Dad had died. Maybe she had found out that I was framed. Either way, it didn't matter anymore.I locked my phone and went back to work. That evening, my former boss called me. "Your wife came by the office today asking where you were. I kept it confidential as you requested, but it's only a matter of time before she finds you. She looked lik

"Chase's dad passed away?" Shannon asked. The doctor looked at her in confusion. "Didn't your husband tell you? He said he was going to the bank to withdraw money from his dad's retirement fund, but he never came back. That delayed his dad's treatment."Shannon staggered backward until she hit the elevator wall.I hadn't been lying. I wasn't arguing over the retirement fund beneficiary for no reason, either. I was trying to save my dad."No… How did things end up like this?"She slowly slid down the elevator wall and buried her face in her knees as her shoulders shook. All she could think of was my dad. He was an honest, unassuming man who had never asked for a penny more than necessary, nor had he ever imposed on our lives."I'm so sorry…"Now that he was gone, he would never hear her apology. When she finally made her way back to the hospital room, she heard Sean and James talking inside."Dad, you've still got it. All you had to do was complain about a little chest pain, a

The takeout container hit the floor, sending stew splashing everywhere. Sean jumped back in fright. The next second, Shannon grabbed him by the shoulders. Her eyes were wide. "What did you just say? What happened to Chase's dad?"Sean froze before catching himself and quickly changing his tune. "Oh, I was just joking. I haven't seen Chase's dad in days, so I guess I went too far…"Shannon sighed, but her frown didn't ease. "That's not something you joke about. Think before you speak next time."With that, she called housekeeping to clean up the room while repeatedly checking the messages she had sent me.However, none of her messages were answered."Shannon," James began. "I'm feeling much better now. When are we going on that trip around the world? I need to start picking out some clothes. You two can share a room when we book the hotels. I won't get in the way.""Dad…" Sean shot James an embarrassed look. The tips of his ears turned bright red.Neither of them noticed the g

My mind went blank for a second. The next moment, the bank called."Mr. Jackman, we're contacting you regarding the 500-thousand-dollar mortgage Mrs. Jackman has taken out on the property. Please arrange repayment at your earliest convenience."A crushing sense of disbelief washed over me. My vision went dark.By the time I stumbled back to Dad's house, Shannon was already there with a group of staff conducting an inspection."What are you doing?" My voice came out hoarse. She glanced at me, calm as ever. "Your little prank last night caused Mr. Gardner Senior to have a heart attack. He's now waiting for a stent surgery. You've made a mistake, so you have to take responsibility for it."I forced myself to steady my trembling voice. I was close to breaking down."This is the only thing Dad left me. You know that…"Shannon paused, then looked around the house. "Where is he? I'd like to know how he raised his son."I scoffed. My eyes were red. "He's… dead."Shannon's head snapp

My flight for the overseas assignment was scheduled for two days later. In a rare act of generosity, my boss paid me three months' worth of salary in advance.I used the money to build Dad the finest headstone I could afford. He had lived his whole life frugally and worked himself to the bone. He deserved a beautiful place to rest in death. When I got home, I started packing. There wasn't much in the house that actually belonged to me anymore. Sean and James had gradually taken over almost every corner.Once I'd packed Dad's belongings, it was as if we'd never lived there at all.A moment later, Shannon walked in. A child followed her into the room.I kept folding my clothes and placing them in my suitcase one by one.Leaning against the doorframe, she frowned at me."What are you doing? Are you going back to your hometown like your dad?" she asked. "You've had a sour face ever since Mr. Gardner Senior moved in, and now you're pulling this stunt? Do you have any idea how that m
