I took one last look at Ethan as his grey eyes couldn't even face me.

I tried to convince myself that he didn't deserve my tears.

I met my mother's eyes, she was standing beside Robert Blackwood, her hand tucked into his arm.

She still looked beautiful but her face was pale, her lips pressed tight. Our eyes met, and for a moment and time stopped.

I didn't know what I expected, that he left her dearest husband's hands and come to comfort her daughter, maybe I was a fool for believing she would do that.

She couldn't even meet my eyes as she looked away, her hand tightening on Robert’s, her head turning to him as if I didn’t exist.

That one gesture hit harder than Rachel’s, Ethan’s lies, or not even the video playing on that massive screen. My mother had made her choice, and it wasn’t me.

It never had been and it will never be.

I wanted to scream, to run to her, to demand why she always chose them—her men, her status, her need for freaking money.

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 135: Shattering in the spotlight

I walked away from Ethan with my head held high even as tears burned at the edges of my vision.I was strong, I had gone through much worst than two rich kids with daddy issues trying to ruin my life.I could handle this.Maybe I would convince myself I never loved him but who the hell am I kidding.I did- I do actually and it will take a while.lot do time and effort to get Ethan Blackwood away from my heart and head. But trust me, I will. Each step I took forward felt like it was splitting me open, but I forced my spine straight and my shoulders squared.it was as if I could fall on the floor face first any moment from now, but heaven forbids that happens.I would not let him see me crumble. Not now, not ever.Especially not after everything he had just admitted, or failed to admit. But Ethan was a stubborn bastard, maybe he didn't get the memo that I didn't want to speak to him ever again because I didn't understand why he was desperately calling my name."Sophie, please!”Even thou

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 132: The breaking

The sheer look of shock on Rachel's face was enough to me to feel better, good and fine what she had said took me down a lot but at least I knew I slapped her.She reeled back, her hand pressed against her cheek, and for the first time, the smugness cracked. She blinked twice like she couldn’t believe what just happened. She couldn't believe I slapped her.“You slapped me?” she gasped out looking very outraged.“I should have done worse,” I hissed trying to control how my chest was heaving, my hands was still shaking and I knew if she tried again I could slap her make up off.She lunged like she was about to claw my face off, but I stepped forward, holding my ground with a kind of fury I didn't even know I had."Try it. I dare you I will fucking end you.”Ethan moved to intercept, even through it wasn't necessary since I got the whole situation under control, he hand raised trying to hold her down as his voice went dangerously low."Rachel—don’t.”Her gaze darted from me to him. That

The scream was involuntarily, my mouth after before my mind it was as simple as that. But that single action gave away the fact that I was eavesdropping.Their heads snapped toward me. Ethan's eyes met mine, wide with shock, guilt and fear.It wasn't my fault really, how was I supposed to know that they were talking about something so serious, I didn’t mean to hear anything.Even though I was the center of the whole conversation. But it was never too late to retreat.I was holding my breath hoping that will ground me but it wasn't working as my heart was pounding so hard against my ribs it felt like it wanted out of my chest.Rachel had a huge ass smile on her face as her eyes found mine with a predator’s gaze, it was at this point that she looked identical to her sadistic father.“Well,” she drawled, “look who decided to play shadow puppet.”Ethan took a step forward.“Sophie—”"Don’t. Please don’t.” I stumbled back. “No. No—no, no—”But he was already moving.“Sophie, wait!”I ran.

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 130: The launch

Immediately we entered I was overwhelmed, people swarmed around us—shareholders, board members, media executives, celebrities, politicians, all wanting to shake Ethan’s hand or kiss both my cheeks.Everyone wanted to talk to I and Ethan, I felt like an insanely popular A-list celebrity. It was insane, I knew Camille and I had wanted a buzz but what we had generated was insane. It was like the met gala but in a hotel launch kind of way, I could tell that Ethan's hotel would rival the Hamptons.I tried to keep a straight face and a plastered smile on even though every "Congratulations!" and "You two are building an empire!" made it feel more real, more permanent.I knew that we were standing at the edge of legacy, but everyone screaming it in my ear made it seem a whole lot overwhelming.I had just stepped into a day in Ethan's whole reality and I was already complaining.I took in a deep breath already expecting the worst as I spotted Rachel standing at the gold accented floral arch.S

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 129: The calm before the storm

Sophie's POV There is something almost too dramatic about being dressed like royalty in the backseat of a bulletproof limo, cruising five miles an hour just so photographers have enough time to swarm. I looked at Ethan, adjusting the delicate diamond clasp of my clutch."You know," I teased him as I crossed one leg over the other. "Since we already changed in the hotel suite, we could have just walked in through the back entrance quietly and cassy without any fuss."Ethan didn’t even flinch, eyes still on the front window like he was surveying a battlefield.“And miss the grand entrance?” he said, smooth as velvet. “Absolutely not.”He finally turned to me as his eyes went from my glossy hair to the slit in my gown. “Besides, you don’t spend that long getting dressed just to enter through the service elevator.”I gave a half-smirk. “Fair enough.”As the limo turned toward the front of the hotel, something outside the tinted glass caught my eye. There, right beneath the massive glow

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 128: Our golden hour

This night was not just meant to be big,It was going to be incredibly monumental.Ethan wasn’t just opening a hotel after all, he was launching the largest luxury hostel brand spanning the United States and the Philippines.A bold, cross-continental empire built from sweat, strategy, and pure hardworking. And I… somehow ended up being the face of it.No pressure at all.But I was going to calm my nerves since I had established that tonight was important. This was his night and for some reason, Ethan insisted I look like I belonged beside him.I stared at myself in the mirror, a little stunned and the reflection almost didn’t feel like me.It was too perfect, like my mother.I had contacted the stylist that Ethan used to surprise me with back when we were still talking, the ones that invaded my small apartment and insisted I take the makeover glam Ethan had paid for.I had told Ethan that I wanted to work with them and I had contacted them weeks now, prepping looks and visuals for the

SOPHIEThe familiar scent of lavender and old books greeted me as I stepped into Rosewood Haven Retirement home.Yes, I was visiting James Callahan's mother, again.. Does Ethan approve of this? No he doesn't, by do I care? Heck no I don't because after all he does stuff I don't approve of all the time.“Miss Sophia,” Hope called from behind the reception desk, adjusting her pink-rimmed glasses as she looked up from her clipboard. She was the receptionist who begged me to continue visiting Rose. “We thought you weren’t coming today. Rose was asking for you all morning.”I smiled, lifting the small paper bag in my hand. “Wouldn’t miss a Saturday, Hope, there was a little delay because of the snacks, I brought her favorite—hazelnut truffles.”Hope chuckled. “That woman’s sweet tooth is legendary. You spoil her, you know.”I gave a small shrug. “She spoils me back.”I walked the path I knew too well, passing paintings she’d told me stories about a dozen times. Rose Callahan had taken a l

  • My Date, My Boss, My Step-brother!   Chapter 126: Confronting the devil himself

Ethan's POVMy father was a bastard because that girl, Sophie. The one who had held me together when I was falling apart and also helped me dig through years of lies. And he spat her name like she was nothing, my jaw locked so tight I thought my teeth might crack, and my hands twitched, begging to slam his desk, to wipe that smirk off his face. Sophie’s face flashed in my mind, with her soft eyes, her smile and the fact that she would always have something to say to make me feel better. It took everything not to lunge across the room and scream that she was worth more than he had ever been. That she had done more for me in months than he had in my whole damn life. But I didn’t because If I let him bait me, I would lose the edge I needed. This wasn’t about Sophie, not right now.It was about my mother.“Digging, actually.” I said in a montone.I couldn’t hold back much longer, he paused and then I saw a crack in his facade, so small most people wouldn’t notice. But I did.I had spen
