Chapter 2

Penulis: Sugarless Boba
Leon was taken into the ER on a stretcher.

He'd suffered a heart attack.

While the doctors cut open his shirt and prepared the defibrillator, I stood outside the trauma room, signing a form acknowledging his critical condition.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking. My signature came out crooked and barely recognizable.

The hospital hallway was empty. At three in the morning, all I could hear were ventilators and the steady beeping of monitors.

I sat alone in a chair, staring at the words "Cardiology Department" on the wall for two hours.

Then my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Sophie—a 15-second video.

It showed a grand mansion with white columns, a massive pool, and immaculately manicured lawns. Sophie stood on the terrace, holding a glass of wine.

A man's voice called from behind her. "Ms. Bennett, dinner is ready."

At the end of the video, she made a heart gesture at the camera.

The caption read, "Mom, this is the place you did everything to keep me from returning to. I'm so sick of living in your crappy little house."

My hand trembled as I read it—not from anger but from fear.

After watching the video three times, I noticed something.

The palm trees outside had distinctive markings found only in tropical climates. Those trees didn't grow in Crownmere or even Westport.

I sent her a screenshot of the trees.

"Where are you? That place isn't even in the country."

There was no response for five full minutes.

Then she sent a voice message.

I played it.

Her voice was full of laughter.

"You just can't stand seeing me happy. You've exploited me for 25 years, and now you can't even stand to see me enjoy a single good day?"

I sent her a long message, telling her to calm down. I told her that Leon was still in the ER and might not make it through the night. I told her that if she returned the money, the Carter family would drop the matter, and so would we.

She never replied.

The next morning, I discovered that she had posted screenshots of our entire conversation on social media.

The caption read, "Look at what my controlling adoptive mother said when I tried to pursue my happiness. All she cares about is money."

The comments were filled with people attacking me.

Someone dug up where I worked. Others called our front desk demanding that I be fired.

At 11:00 am, my supervisor called me into his office.

He looked deeply uncomfortable. On his desk was a notice placing me on indefinite suspension.

"Margaret, it's not that we don't believe you, but public pressure is just too much. Go home and deal with your family situation. We'll talk when things settle down."

I hadn't even made it out of the building when my phone rang again.

It was a call from a law firm.

Sophie had retained them.

They demanded that I transfer part of the property in my name as "compensation owed to my adopted daughter". If I refused, they threatened to pursue legal action.

The edge of the letter from the law firm sliced my finger, leaving a thin line of blood.

I barely felt it.

I clutched the letter and walked toward the trash can, but stopped. One thought had suddenly hit me.

Sophie had left with her ID and passport ready. She knew all of our account passwords. She already had a lawyer lined up.

None of this had been impulsive. She had been planning it for at least six months.

For six months, she had been clinging to me as if nothing was wrong. She ate everything I made for her. She left the entryway light on whenever I worked late.

I couldn't stop thinking about that "mansion" in the video and those carefully scripted lies.

I couldn't help wondering who exactly the so-called "powerful man in the country" advising her was.

Four months later, the verdict was handed down. Sophie was sentenced to seven and a half years for concealing criminal proceeds and acting as an accomplice to fraud. Daniel received 23 years for money laundering, extortion, and additional charges stemming from his previous drug-trafficking case. On the day the judge delivered the verdict, I sat in the gallery and watched Sophie being led out of the courtroom in a gray prison uniform. When she passed me, she stopped and looked back. Her lips moved, but no words came out. I said nothing. A bailiff urged her forward, and she stumbled out of the courtroom. Most of the 300 thousand that belonged to Ethan was eventually recovered through international legal cooperation. He came to our house in person and apologized sincerely. "Margaret, I'm sorry. I know my family said some terrible things before." I asked him to sit down for tea and told him he still had a long life ahead of him. He couldn't let this one thing hold him

On the third day, one of Liana's colleagues called me, sounding uneasy."Mrs. Bennett, Sophie has been causing trouble in the interrogation room for three days. She won't confess to anything, but she keeps demanding to see you and Captain Reed."When I arrived at police headquarters, I watched through the one-way glass. Sophie sat in a metal chair, her messy hair falling around her face, her handcuffs secured to a metal ring on the table.A stack of printed transaction and call records sat in front of her. She hadn't even looked at them. Liana sat across from her, reviewing the case file and taking notes. Suddenly, Sophie spoke, her voice sharp enough to carry through the glass. "So you're Liana? Who the hell do you think you are? You were found in a trash heap. What makes you think you have any right to interrogate me?"Liana didn't look up. She kept writing. When Sophie got no reaction, she started pounding the table. "You're interrogating me? What right do you have?

At the notary's office, Daniel sprawled across the leather sofa, legs crossed as he casually chewed on the complimentary chips. Sophie sat beside him, sipping water and looking around the nicely furnished room. Daniel tapped his fingers on the coffee table. "One million isn't enough. My daughter told me about your daughter. I'm sure a police captain makes a ton of money. And she gets to inherit your house, right? Let's add it all up and make it five million." I sat across from them, opened my briefcase, and slid a thick document across the table. "This is an agreement terminating the adoption and waiving all rights and obligations between us. Once you two sign it and stamp your fingerprints on it, we'll be strangers for good. You will no longer contact or harass me or my daughter again. Once it's signed, you'll get your money." Daniel grabbed the document and flipped straight to the signature page. "Where's the pen?" The notary handed him one. He signed the page. Be

Four days later, our quiet life fell apart. On the fifth morning, I had just stepped outside to go to the market when I found a crowd gathered downstairs. Three news vans were parked along the street, with cameras pointed at my balcony. Two people stood in the middle of the crowd. One was Sophie. She had changed into clean clothes, covered her bruises with makeup, and made herself look as helpless and pitiful as possible. The other was a thin man in his 50s, wearing a gold chain and reeking of cigarettes. I recognized him immediately. He looked much older than he had in the police records from 25 years ago, but that greasy, sinister look in his eyes hadn't changed. He was Sophie's biological father, Daniel Mercer, a convicted drug dealer and fraudster who had also been involved in illegal fundraising. He had been released from prison just last year. The moment he saw me, he forced tears into his eyes and shouted toward the cameras."Look at this woman! 25 years ago, s

Two months later, I was washing dishes one evening when the doorbell rang. I dried my hands and opened the door. It took me five seconds to recognize the woman standing there. Her hair was matted, her coat was torn in several places, and her shoes were mismatched. Her face was sunburnt and covered in bruises, and she had lost so much weight that her cheekbones jutted out. It was Sophie. The moment she saw me, her knees gave out. She collapsed in the doorway and screamed loud enough for the whole building to hear. "Mom! Please, save me! He's not some powerful man. He's a scammer! He locked me in a factory and forced me to work. I spent six months saving enough money to buy a ticket and sneak back!"I held onto the doorframe and didn't move. She crawled toward me, sobbing. "Mom, please forgive me. I was completely fooled. Please let me in. I'm starving." I stepped aside. It wasn't because I felt sorry for her. I wanted to see what she would do next. The first thing sh

I held Liana and cried in that office for nearly half an hour. She didn't pull away or try to comfort me. She simply patted my back over and over. When I finally caught my breath, she handed me a tissue and blinked hard, fighting back her own tears. My voice was hoarse. "How did you live all these years?"She pulled a chair across from me and sat down, her legs planted wide apart, looking almost like a soldier. "After I was found, the officers put me in an orphanage temporarily. Three days later, a recently discharged detective came there to investigate a case and ended up taking me home." Her voice was calm, almost as if she were giving a work report. "He was single. As a man raising a baby, he had no idea what he was doing. I grew up on baby formula. He raised me until I was 18, and then I joined the military. After I was discharged, I entered the police academy."I opened my mouth to ask more, but she waved me off. "Mom, we'll have plenty of time to talk about that la
