Penulis: Sugarless Boba

Chapter 1

Penulis: Sugarless Boba
The bridal suite had been locked from the inside for 20 minutes.

I stood in the hallway clutching the bridal bouquet, knocking on the door every few seconds.

"Sophie, the guests are seated. Your dad is getting anxious at the table."

There was no answer.

I pressed my ear against the door. No sound of the hair dryer or the makeup brushes tapping against the counter. Nothing.

A chill ran through me. I turned and shouted to a hotel employee at the end of the hall, asking for the spare key.

The moment the door opened, I froze.

My adoptive daughter Sophie Bennett's reception dress lay scattered across the floor, and a crooked message was scrawled across the mirror in lipstick.

"I'm going to find my real family."

My phone slipped from my hand, and the bouquet fell apart at my feet.

Her fiance, Ethan Carter, came running from the main hall, all the color draining from his face.

He held up his phone with trembling hands. It took him several tries to speak.

"Margaret… the 300 thousand dollars for the down payment for the house is gone. All of it."

300 thousand dollars.

It was money the Carter family had scraped together by selling two properties they owned back home in Northbridge. The final payment to the developer was due tomorrow.

I snatched his phone and saw the bank alert. At 4:03 am, exactly 300 thousand had been transferred out.

The recipient was listed under an unfamiliar set of initials.

I frantically called Sophie.

All I got was, "The number you are calling is switched off."

Hotel security pulled up the footage from the back entrance.

There she was, wearing the cardigan I had personally picked out for her, suitcase in hand, climbing into an unlicensed SUV.

Just before the door closed, she looked back and smiled at the camera.

That smile sent a chill down my spine.

It wasn't the look of a girl who had been deceived.

It was the look of someone who thought she was about to make it big and was mocking the life she was leaving behind.

Chaos had already erupted in the banquet hall.

Ethan's mother suffered a medical emergency and was rushed out on a stretcher.

His father struck my husband, Leon Bennett, with his cane, screaming for his money back.

Leon stumbled backward, clutching his chest. His face was ashen, and sweat covered his forehead.

I wanted to withdraw our savings from the bank and cover the money ourselves, if only to keep the Carter family from coming after us.

But when I searched through my bag, my heart dropped.

I quickly called a neighbor and asked them to check our safe at home. A message came back moments later.

"The safe is empty. The passbook and property deeds are gone."

I sank onto the hotel hallway carpet, my vision going black.

Then the bridesmaid, Emily Hayes, ran over and shoved her phone in front of me.

It was a livestream with a pink backdrop and 23 thousand viewers.

Sophie sat in front of the camera, perfectly made up and dressed in designer clothes, with two suspiciously perfect tears rolling down her cheeks.

She began, "Everyone, I finally escaped today. You have no idea what I've been through for the past 25 years. They treated me like a cash cow and forced me to marry a man I don't love just so they could get money from the groom."

The comments exploded.

"Girl, you're so brave!"

"Call the police!"

"Those adoptive parents belong in prison!"

She only grew bolder, publicly naming Leon and me and even revealing our workplaces and address.

"The money I took was compensation I deserved. It was for 25 years of my youth. Honestly, 300 thousand dollars isn't nearly enough."

I stared at her tear-streaked face, my stomach churning.

"Margaret, your phone's blowing up," Emily said, grabbing my arm. "Everyone is asking what happened."

During the short walk from the hotel lobby to the parking lot, I received dozens of calls.

Coworkers. Supervisors. Leon's friends. Reporters.

Everyone was asking the same thing.

"What did you do to that girl?"

I couldn't answer.

Meanwhile, Sophie's livestream continued.

Her voice came through the phone in that same sweet, childish tone I had heard for 25 years.

"Once I'm back with my real family, my wealthy brother will give me the most lavish wedding ever."

At the time, I didn't have the energy to wonder who was behind the online outrage.

Only later did I realize that this was just the beginning.

Four months later, the verdict was handed down. Sophie was sentenced to seven and a half years for concealing criminal proceeds and acting as an accomplice to fraud. Daniel received 23 years for money laundering, extortion, and additional charges stemming from his previous drug-trafficking case. On the day the judge delivered the verdict, I sat in the gallery and watched Sophie being led out of the courtroom in a gray prison uniform. When she passed me, she stopped and looked back. Her lips moved, but no words came out. I said nothing. A bailiff urged her forward, and she stumbled out of the courtroom. Most of the 300 thousand that belonged to Ethan was eventually recovered through international legal cooperation. He came to our house in person and apologized sincerely. "Margaret, I'm sorry. I know my family said some terrible things before." I asked him to sit down for tea and told him he still had a long life ahead of him. He couldn't let this one thing hold him

On the third day, one of Liana's colleagues called me, sounding uneasy."Mrs. Bennett, Sophie has been causing trouble in the interrogation room for three days. She won't confess to anything, but she keeps demanding to see you and Captain Reed."When I arrived at police headquarters, I watched through the one-way glass. Sophie sat in a metal chair, her messy hair falling around her face, her handcuffs secured to a metal ring on the table.A stack of printed transaction and call records sat in front of her. She hadn't even looked at them. Liana sat across from her, reviewing the case file and taking notes. Suddenly, Sophie spoke, her voice sharp enough to carry through the glass. "So you're Liana? Who the hell do you think you are? You were found in a trash heap. What makes you think you have any right to interrogate me?"Liana didn't look up. She kept writing. When Sophie got no reaction, she started pounding the table. "You're interrogating me? What right do you have?

At the notary's office, Daniel sprawled across the leather sofa, legs crossed as he casually chewed on the complimentary chips. Sophie sat beside him, sipping water and looking around the nicely furnished room. Daniel tapped his fingers on the coffee table. "One million isn't enough. My daughter told me about your daughter. I'm sure a police captain makes a ton of money. And she gets to inherit your house, right? Let's add it all up and make it five million." I sat across from them, opened my briefcase, and slid a thick document across the table. "This is an agreement terminating the adoption and waiving all rights and obligations between us. Once you two sign it and stamp your fingerprints on it, we'll be strangers for good. You will no longer contact or harass me or my daughter again. Once it's signed, you'll get your money." Daniel grabbed the document and flipped straight to the signature page. "Where's the pen?" The notary handed him one. He signed the page. Be

Four days later, our quiet life fell apart. On the fifth morning, I had just stepped outside to go to the market when I found a crowd gathered downstairs. Three news vans were parked along the street, with cameras pointed at my balcony. Two people stood in the middle of the crowd. One was Sophie. She had changed into clean clothes, covered her bruises with makeup, and made herself look as helpless and pitiful as possible. The other was a thin man in his 50s, wearing a gold chain and reeking of cigarettes. I recognized him immediately. He looked much older than he had in the police records from 25 years ago, but that greasy, sinister look in his eyes hadn't changed. He was Sophie's biological father, Daniel Mercer, a convicted drug dealer and fraudster who had also been involved in illegal fundraising. He had been released from prison just last year. The moment he saw me, he forced tears into his eyes and shouted toward the cameras."Look at this woman! 25 years ago, s

Two months later, I was washing dishes one evening when the doorbell rang. I dried my hands and opened the door. It took me five seconds to recognize the woman standing there. Her hair was matted, her coat was torn in several places, and her shoes were mismatched. Her face was sunburnt and covered in bruises, and she had lost so much weight that her cheekbones jutted out. It was Sophie. The moment she saw me, her knees gave out. She collapsed in the doorway and screamed loud enough for the whole building to hear. "Mom! Please, save me! He's not some powerful man. He's a scammer! He locked me in a factory and forced me to work. I spent six months saving enough money to buy a ticket and sneak back!"I held onto the doorframe and didn't move. She crawled toward me, sobbing. "Mom, please forgive me. I was completely fooled. Please let me in. I'm starving." I stepped aside. It wasn't because I felt sorry for her. I wanted to see what she would do next. The first thing sh

I held Liana and cried in that office for nearly half an hour. She didn't pull away or try to comfort me. She simply patted my back over and over. When I finally caught my breath, she handed me a tissue and blinked hard, fighting back her own tears. My voice was hoarse. "How did you live all these years?"She pulled a chair across from me and sat down, her legs planted wide apart, looking almost like a soldier. "After I was found, the officers put me in an orphanage temporarily. Three days later, a recently discharged detective came there to investigate a case and ended up taking me home." Her voice was calm, almost as if she were giving a work report. "He was single. As a man raising a baby, he had no idea what he was doing. I grew up on baby formula. He raised me until I was 18, and then I joined the military. After I was discharged, I entered the police academy."I opened my mouth to ask more, but she waved me off. "Mom, we'll have plenty of time to talk about that la
