Chapter 2

Author: Crackling Fireworks
Gavin finally came home at eight that night.

The first thing he did wasn't check on Sadie.

Instead, he set a pink shopping bag on the console table by the door and carefully straightened it.

I glanced at it.

Inside was a nicely packaged Barbie set. The receipt was still in the bag, showing a price of just over sixty dollars.

Sadie didn't like Barbies.

She liked dinosaurs and LEGO sets. She'd told him that more times than I could count.

"Who's that for?"

He kicked off his shoes without looking up.

"Millie's birthday is next week. I happened to see it while I was out, so I picked it up."

Just happened to pick it up.

He could remember someone else's child's birthday, what she liked, even what size she wore.

Yet somehow he'd forgotten that his own daughter had been home alone for three days, injured and sick.

I said nothing.

I plugged the flash drive into the TV and pressed play.

The footage filled the sixty-five-inch screen.

The first night.

Sadie was curled up in the corner of the couch watching cartoons, her eyelids growing heavier by the second. Little by little, she slid lower until she slipped off the couch and fell to the floor.

Her head hit the leg of the coffee table. She curled up in pain, her mouth open, but forced herself not to cry.

Then she pushed herself back up, touched the scrape on her chin, hugged a pillow to her chest, and curled up on the cold floor to sleep.

The next morning.

She stood on a step stool, reaching for the kettle in the kitchen.

The kettle was too heavy for her. It tipped over, spilling hot water across the table and onto her right hand. Sadie jerked her hand back and fell backward onto the floor.

The back of her hand quickly turned red. Tears welled in her eyes, but she still didn't cry.

She ran to the bathroom on her own and held her hand under the faucet for a long, long time.

The third day.

Her cheeks were flushed with fever as she sat on the couch holding a thermometer.

Then she looked straight at the security camera and gave it a weak little smile.

"I think Mommy can see me. I'm a little warm, but I'm okay. You don't have to worry."

After that, she rummaged through the medicine cabinet. Her burned hand trembled as she split a fever-reducer tablet in half and swallowed it.

The living room was deathly quiet.

My heart pounded like a drum in my ears.

Gavin's expression finally changed.

But only for a second.

"I didn't know Denise wasn't coming," he said, his voice strained. "It was an accident."

Then he quickly regained his usual composure.

"An accident?" I turned to him. "You didn't come home for three days. You didn't call once. You didn't even ask about her. Your 'accident' could have cost your daughter her life.

"Her burn is already infected. Did you see that? Did you see the bruise on her face? Did you know she had a fever over 102 degrees and had to take medicine by herself?"

He frowned.

"Can you stop getting so worked up? She's fine now, isn't she? I didn't do it on purpose.

"And Sadie should be more independent anyway. Look at Millie. She's even younger, and Celeste raised her on her own. She's so much easier to take care of."

Millie again.

Celeste again.

The anger burning in my chest made my whole body shake.

"Gavin, if it had been Millie, could you have let her go through those three days alone?"

His mouth opened.

But nothing came out.

Because the answer was obvious.

He wouldn't.

He never would have let Millie go through any of that.

But Sadie?

Apparently, she was the one he was willing to put through it.

I turned off the TV, pulled out the flash drive, and closed my hand around it.

"I'm tired. I'm staying with Sadie tonight."

Behind me, Gavin called out, "Tessa, what do you want from me? I told you it was a misunderstanding. Are you really going to keep dragging this out?"

I didn't turn around.

I went into the bedroom and locked the door behind me.

Sadie was already asleep.

She was curled up under the covers, her injured hand resting beside her pillow. Even in her sleep, she instinctively guarded it.

I lay down beside her and gently pulled her into my arms.

I cried silently until my pillow was soaked.

Six months later, Paige and I opened a children's art studio together.I handled the business side, while she taught the classes.Sadie became our first little guest. The largest wall in the studio was covered with her dinosaur drawings.A T. rex wearing a crown.A triceratops with a backpack. And a chubby brachiosaurus holding a little girl in its arms.I pointed to it. "Who's this?"Sadie answered seriously, "It's the mommy dinosaur.""What about the daddy dinosaur?"She tilted her head and thought for a moment."He went out looking for food and got lost."Then she burst out laughing at her own answer. The burn on her hand had healed, leaving only a few faint scars. Her therapist said she was recovering well. She was no longer afraid of being alone, and she no longer trembled whenever someone knocked on the door. Most importantly, she'd learned to say when something hurt, to say no, and to let herself cry.On Friday afternoon, someone showed up outside the studio.Gavin.I hadn't see

Gavin was the one who asked for the paternity test. The day the results came back, he sat at the testing center for two full hours.Millie wasn't his daughter. The staff had made it perfectly clear: there was no biological relationship between them.Celeste had lied to both men.She told her ex-husband that Millie was Gavin's daughter. Then she told Gavin that Millie was the poor little girl her ex-husband had left behind. For three years, she'd played on both men's guilt and sympathy, taking money from both of them. The most ironic part was that Gavin had never questioned any of it.He'd rather support a child whose paternity was uncertain than make time to come home and see his own daughter. At our divorce mediation, he pushed the agreement across the table toward me."You can have the home and the savings. I'll transfer a fifteen-percent stake in the company to Sadie."I didn't touch the papers."We'll divide the marital assets according to the law. And I'll recover my share of the

Celeste was taken into police custody. The man who had posed as a building maintenance worker confessed almost immediately.Celeste had paid him three thousand dollars to take Sadie to a short-term rental in Foxmere, hold her there for two days, and then contact Gavin so he could come "rescue" her.She had even planned out what would happen next.Gavin would play the hero who saved his daughter.I would look like the negligent mother who had lost her child. Then Celeste would pay online gossip accounts to paint me as an unstable woman who had used her own child to get back at her husband. She had almost pulled it off.Outside the interrogation room, Gavin stood with his head lowered, looking as if all the strength had been drained out of him."I didn't know."He repeated it three times."I really didn't know she'd do something like this."I held Sadie in my arms and gave him a cold look."Of course you didn't."You didn't know the nanny had taken time off. You didn't know your daughter

My mind went blank."What do you mean, she's missing?""Someone knocked on the door and said he was with building maintenance and needed to check the gas line. I stepped into the kitchen for a moment, and when I came back out, the door was open, and Sadie was gone.""What about the security footage?""They're pulling it now. Tessa, I'm so sorry. I never thought this would happen.""Don't cry. Call the police."I turned and ran.Gavin hurried after me. "What happened to Sadie?"I shoved him back."Don't touch me.""Is Sadie missing?""That's none of your business.""She's my daughter!""Now you remember?"His face went pale.Celeste came after us too."Tessa, is there anything I can do?"I looked at her.She was clutching her purse so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.Paige had just said someone had posed as a maintenance worker.Very few people knew Sadie and I were staying at Paige's place.Lauren. The cab driver. Gavin. And one other person.Celeste, who had somehow heard a

At the police station, Gavin insisted it had all been an oversight."I've been busy with work. Our nanny took time off at the last minute, and I never got the message."I pulled up our text thread and placed my phone on the table."I told him explicitly the day before I left."The officer glanced at the messages.Gavin immediately changed his story."I forgot.""You forgot for three whole days?"I looked at him."The resort you stayed at was only forty minutes from home. You didn't forget to post on social media five times a day, though.""Tessa, enough.""No. It's not enough."I pulled out Sadie's medical report."The doctor said if I'd brought her in one day later, she might have needed a skin graft."Gavin's lips parted. This time, he couldn't accuse me of overreacting. After the officer finished taking our statements, he told Gavin the matter would be investigated further. The moment we stepped outside, Celeste rushed over. She didn't even look at me.Instead, she grabbed Gavin's a

As the cab reached the on-ramp to the freeway leading to the airport, I turned my phone back on.Twenty-seven missed calls.Nineteen from Gavin, six from Celeste, and two from numbers I didn't recognize.I was about to turn it off again when Lauren called."Ms. Marlowe, your husband called the police. He says you took Sadie without his permission.""She's my daughter. How is taking my own child kidnapping?""It isn't. But he may try to stop you at the airport. Don't board your flight yet. Get Sadie somewhere safe first."And there's something else. Ms. Keaton just contacted me. She says Mr. Halstead is pressuring the preschool to change what they say happened."I let out a cold laugh. So that was what had him panicking. He wasn't scrambling to check on Sadie. He was scrambling to make the evidence disappear."Could you take the next exit and turn around?"I gave the driver the address of my best friend, Paige Lennox.Sadie hugged her LEGO dinosaur set and looked up at me."Mommy, aren'
