Chapter 1

Author: Crackling Fireworks
I held my daughter, Sadie Halstead, in my arms, feeling completely hollowed out.

The security footage kept replaying in my head, frame by frame. I couldn't make it stop.

She was only five.

She had spent three days and three nights all by herself.

I gently pulled back and cupped her face, looking her over carefully.

There was a bruise on her left cheekbone from falling off the couch. A scrape on her chin had already scabbed over.

I took her hand and pushed up her sleeve. The skin underneath was red and swollen, covered in blisters. Some had already burst and were seeping pale yellow fluid.

The tears came before I could stop them.

"Does it hurt?"

Sadie pulled her hand back slightly and shook her head.

"Not anymore. I put toothpaste on it. It felt cool, so it stopped hurting."

She was five years old.

She'd been scalded by boiling water, and the only thing she could think to do was put toothpaste on the burn.

She didn't know she was supposed to keep the burn under cool running water for twenty minutes. She didn't know broken blisters could get infected. She didn't know a burn this bad needed medical attention.

She didn't know any of that.

And where had her father been?

At the beach with another woman's daughter.

Drinking wine. Taking pictures. Posting them online.

I opened my text thread with Gavin Halstead. Our last exchange was from three days earlier.

Before I left, I'd texted him.

Me: [Denise has a family matter to take care of, so she's off this week. You need to come home on time and take care of Sadie while I'm gone.]

His reply had been two words.

Gavin: [Got it.]

Then three days passed.

Not one text.

Not one phone call.

I called him. The phone rang seven or eight times before he finally picked up.

There was a lot of noise in the background, like he was at a mall. I could hear children laughing and shouting.

"You're back?" he asked casually, as if we were talking about the weather.

"Gavin, you haven't been home in three days."

"Oh. Something came up with a project. I asked Denise to..."

"Denise took time off. I told you before I left."

He went quiet for two seconds.

"What about Sadie? She's okay, right?"

Okay?

I looked at the bruise on her face, the scrape on her chin, and the burn on her hand.

"She had a 102-degree fever and split a fever-reducer tablet in half by herself. She fell off the couch and scraped her face. She spilled boiling water on her hand, and the blisters burst. And you're asking me if she's okay?"

My voice shook, rising almost to a shout.

He fell silent for a moment.

When he finally spoke, there was irritation in his voice.

"All right, all right. Kids get bumps and bruises all the time. Stop making such a big deal out of it. I'll come home tonight and check on her."

Then he hung up.

The call cut off, and the harsh beep in my ear felt like a needle.

I gripped my phone until my knuckles turned white.

Sadie tugged at my shirt and looked up at me cautiously.

"Mommy, don't be mad, okay? I got burned because I wasn't careful. It's not Daddy's fault.

"Daddy said he had something really important to do. He told me to be good and wait for him. He said when he was done, he'd take me to KFC."

Her eyes lit up as she spoke. She really believed a promise he was never going to keep.

I couldn't bring myself to tell her the truth.

The father she'd waited three days for, the man who'd supposedly had something "really important" to do, had been helping Celeste Rowan's daughter, Millie, build sandcastles on the beach.

I crouched down to her level and looked her in the eyes.

"Sweetheart, Mommy needs to ask you something. I want you to tell me the truth.

"Does Daddy stay away from home a lot?"

Sadie bit her lower lip and looked down, twisting the hem of her shirt between her fingers.

After a long pause, she answered softly, "Sometimes.

"But Daddy says grown-ups are always busy, so I should just play by myself.

"He says Millie doesn't have a daddy, so she has it worse than I do. He says I need to be a big girl and not be so clingy."

It felt like someone had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart until it hurt.

He expected a five-year-old to be a "big girl."

Big enough not to cry when she had a fever.

Big enough not to call for help when she got burned.

Big enough to pick herself up when she fell and hurt her face.

For three days and three nights, she'd endured all of it on her own.

All because someone else's child supposedly had it worse?

What about his own daughter, curled up on the floor, bruised and trembling? Didn't she deserve his sympathy too?

Six months later, Paige and I opened a children's art studio together.I handled the business side, while she taught the classes.Sadie became our first little guest. The largest wall in the studio was covered with her dinosaur drawings.A T. rex wearing a crown.A triceratops with a backpack. And a chubby brachiosaurus holding a little girl in its arms.I pointed to it. "Who's this?"Sadie answered seriously, "It's the mommy dinosaur.""What about the daddy dinosaur?"She tilted her head and thought for a moment."He went out looking for food and got lost."Then she burst out laughing at her own answer. The burn on her hand had healed, leaving only a few faint scars. Her therapist said she was recovering well. She was no longer afraid of being alone, and she no longer trembled whenever someone knocked on the door. Most importantly, she'd learned to say when something hurt, to say no, and to let herself cry.On Friday afternoon, someone showed up outside the studio.Gavin.I hadn't see

Gavin was the one who asked for the paternity test. The day the results came back, he sat at the testing center for two full hours.Millie wasn't his daughter. The staff had made it perfectly clear: there was no biological relationship between them.Celeste had lied to both men.She told her ex-husband that Millie was Gavin's daughter. Then she told Gavin that Millie was the poor little girl her ex-husband had left behind. For three years, she'd played on both men's guilt and sympathy, taking money from both of them. The most ironic part was that Gavin had never questioned any of it.He'd rather support a child whose paternity was uncertain than make time to come home and see his own daughter. At our divorce mediation, he pushed the agreement across the table toward me."You can have the home and the savings. I'll transfer a fifteen-percent stake in the company to Sadie."I didn't touch the papers."We'll divide the marital assets according to the law. And I'll recover my share of the

Celeste was taken into police custody. The man who had posed as a building maintenance worker confessed almost immediately.Celeste had paid him three thousand dollars to take Sadie to a short-term rental in Foxmere, hold her there for two days, and then contact Gavin so he could come "rescue" her.She had even planned out what would happen next.Gavin would play the hero who saved his daughter.I would look like the negligent mother who had lost her child. Then Celeste would pay online gossip accounts to paint me as an unstable woman who had used her own child to get back at her husband. She had almost pulled it off.Outside the interrogation room, Gavin stood with his head lowered, looking as if all the strength had been drained out of him."I didn't know."He repeated it three times."I really didn't know she'd do something like this."I held Sadie in my arms and gave him a cold look."Of course you didn't."You didn't know the nanny had taken time off. You didn't know your daughter

My mind went blank."What do you mean, she's missing?""Someone knocked on the door and said he was with building maintenance and needed to check the gas line. I stepped into the kitchen for a moment, and when I came back out, the door was open, and Sadie was gone.""What about the security footage?""They're pulling it now. Tessa, I'm so sorry. I never thought this would happen.""Don't cry. Call the police."I turned and ran.Gavin hurried after me. "What happened to Sadie?"I shoved him back."Don't touch me.""Is Sadie missing?""That's none of your business.""She's my daughter!""Now you remember?"His face went pale.Celeste came after us too."Tessa, is there anything I can do?"I looked at her.She was clutching her purse so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.Paige had just said someone had posed as a maintenance worker.Very few people knew Sadie and I were staying at Paige's place.Lauren. The cab driver. Gavin. And one other person.Celeste, who had somehow heard a

At the police station, Gavin insisted it had all been an oversight."I've been busy with work. Our nanny took time off at the last minute, and I never got the message."I pulled up our text thread and placed my phone on the table."I told him explicitly the day before I left."The officer glanced at the messages.Gavin immediately changed his story."I forgot.""You forgot for three whole days?"I looked at him."The resort you stayed at was only forty minutes from home. You didn't forget to post on social media five times a day, though.""Tessa, enough.""No. It's not enough."I pulled out Sadie's medical report."The doctor said if I'd brought her in one day later, she might have needed a skin graft."Gavin's lips parted. This time, he couldn't accuse me of overreacting. After the officer finished taking our statements, he told Gavin the matter would be investigated further. The moment we stepped outside, Celeste rushed over. She didn't even look at me.Instead, she grabbed Gavin's a

As the cab reached the on-ramp to the freeway leading to the airport, I turned my phone back on.Twenty-seven missed calls.Nineteen from Gavin, six from Celeste, and two from numbers I didn't recognize.I was about to turn it off again when Lauren called."Ms. Marlowe, your husband called the police. He says you took Sadie without his permission.""She's my daughter. How is taking my own child kidnapping?""It isn't. But he may try to stop you at the airport. Don't board your flight yet. Get Sadie somewhere safe first."And there's something else. Ms. Keaton just contacted me. She says Mr. Halstead is pressuring the preschool to change what they say happened."I let out a cold laugh. So that was what had him panicking. He wasn't scrambling to check on Sadie. He was scrambling to make the evidence disappear."Could you take the next exit and turn around?"I gave the driver the address of my best friend, Paige Lennox.Sadie hugged her LEGO dinosaur set and looked up at me."Mommy, aren'
