Chapter 1

After the gathering ended, Nina saw that I was upset and came to my room in the middle of the night, trying to act sweet.

"Mommy, can you tell me a story?"

I said gently, "Mommy's tired and needs to rest. I'll tell you one tomorrow."

Nina pouted. "Then can you play a story for me?"

"Nina, it's already one in the morning. You need to go to sleep."

Her pout deepened. "Other kids all get bedtime stories. You don't love me at all."

I'd just scrubbed off a full face of makeup, and the woman in the mirror looked utterly exhausted. I lost my patience and snapped, "Yes, yes, you're right. I don't love you because you're not really mine."

Nina froze for a second. Then, without another word, she pattered back to her bedroom.

I thought she'd finally settled down.

I never expected everything to blow up the next day.

Nina flooded the Family group chat with messages. "Don, please help me find my real mommy! Sophia treats me horribly. She won't even let me sleep at one in the morning. She locks me up and won't let me do anything! Bring Daddy home. I want Daddy... Boo-hoo..."

My husband was the Don's right-hand man and the Family's chief executive.

He also controlled every personnel move in the middle and upper ranks.

If our enemies found out that our own household was divided, they would know exactly where to strike.

Sure enough, Nina's messages reached Don Marlow. He brought Vincent home himself. "Did you really abuse the girl? Vincent is one of my longest-serving underbosses. I don't want a scandal ruining his future."

My husband shot me an awkward look.

Before I could explain, Nina jumped in. "It's all true! Mommy yells at me every day! I don't like her!"

Marlow frowned. "Why would your mother treat you that way, little girl? I don't believe any mother would do such a thing."

Nina planted her hands on her hips and shouted as if she had every right to. "Because Mommy stole me!"

Then she gave me a sly look.

My mind went blank.

I remembered the careless words I'd thrown at her the night before.

I never imagined my daughter would use them to make accusations against me.

Marlow's brow furrowed. He turned to my husband and bit out each word. "This is your household business. I have one request. Don't bring me trouble I don't need."

I forced an awkward smile. "She was acting up last night. I said something in anger without thinking, and she took it seriously. You know how children are."

The Don's frown eased a little.

I let out a breath, ready to promise it would never happen again.

But Nina spoke up.

All wide-eyed confusion, she asked:

"But Don, Mommy can't have babies. If she didn't steal me, then where did I come from?"

Marlow turned a doubtful look on me.

I explained quickly, my nerves fraying.

"I was hurt not long after we married, and I never conceived again. That's all she means when she says I can't have children."

I tugged at Nina's sleeve, signaling her to stop.

She yanked her arm away. "That's not right! Mommy and Daddy only got married six years ago, but I'm already seven!"

Marlow's voice had gone flat with impatience. "Sophia, bring out her birth certificate. The Family does not tolerate trafficking in children. An accusation like this could bring serious trouble down on us!"

My stomach dropped.

Nina's birth certificate... I didn't have one.

All I had were adoption papers.

And I didn't want to hand them over.

Because then Nina would know that she really wasn't mine by blood.

I'd pulled her back from the edge of death seven years ago, in the middle of a job gone bloody.

The first time I saw her, I was horrified by what her parents had done. Only one thought filled my head: if she stayed with her birth parents, living might be worse for her than dying.

I couldn't leave her there. I talked Vincent into it, and we brought her home.

It had never been convenient to tell the Don who she really was.

Nina kept using my angry words to embarrass me, never knowing they were also the truth.

I kept my face calm and raced through excuses in my head.

Before I could speak, Nina suddenly clapped her hands and laughed.

"Oh, I get it now."

"Mommy's one of those single moms everyone talks about. She had me first, then married Daddy."

She turned to me, sweet as anything. "Mommy, your personal life is really disgraceful, isn't it?"

I froze.

I stared into those flat black eyes of hers and went cold all over.

In that moment, I was the farmer from the fable, and she was the snake I'd saved.

Certain she'd gotten even with me, Nina's smile only grew brighter.

"Mommy, I'm only telling the truth. You're not mad at me, are you?"

Marlow's heavy gaze moved between Vincent and me. "Enough. Do I have your word? No more dragging the Family's name through the mud."

Nina's sly eyes filled me with dread.

Still, I forced everything down. "...You have my word."

Nina had recognized me, I think.I'd changed cars, after all, but not the plate. She struggled to her feet and beat the dust off herself. She spat into her palm and smoothed down her tangled hair with it.Then she came limping toward me.In the car, Dolly was in the middle of telling me, with great animation, all the funny things that had happened at school.Seeing me drift off, she tilted her head and asked, "Mommy, why do you keep staring at the mirror like that?"I came back to myself and reached over to ruffle her hair."Nothing. Mommy just saw someone she knew a long time ago..."I stopped, suddenly unsure what to call her.Family? Not anymore. In the end, I found the right word."...someone. Mommy saw someone she used to know a long time ago."What Nina meant to me now.Just someone. Nothing more.Dolly tilted her head at me, not understanding, but she smiled sweetly and suddenly said, "Mommy, you're so pretty!"Warmth spread through me, and I glanced at the mirror.Seven years h

That familiar voice, those familiar words, made me stop the car and look a little longer. Her clothes were cheap and gaudy, and her face looked thirty. It took me a while to place her.It was Nina.Six years earlier, a caseworker from the orphanage had come to see me.She'd wanted to talk me into adopting Nina again."That girl you adopted before, her parents are truly worthless. For money, they sold her straight to an organ ring. She's already lost a kidney, and now she's too terrified to go home. She wants you to take her back. Would you?"I looked at Dolly in my arms, smiling up at me, sweet as anything."No. I have my own child now. I won't have her affecting Dolly."The caseworker sighed and said, softly, "I figured as much. I read up on her before I came. I knew it was a long shot.""You were so good to her, and she was so cruel to you. Who'd dare raise a child like that?""And with parents like hers, it looks like she'll just have to stay at the orphanage."Where Nina went after

Once the clarification video went up, the whole storm finally died down.Nina posted nothing more. How the Morettis managed that, I didn't care to know. Then came the court date, and Vincent had everything arranged. With the birth parents' claim and the statement Nina had signed herself, the judge honored her stated wishes and returned custody to her real parents. And on the very day my ties to Nina were severed for good, the hospital called with good news.I was pregnant.Ten months later, the baby came. A girl.I held the baby who looked almost exactly like me and wept for joy.Her eyes weren't open yet, but when I lifted her, she smiled, sweet as could be.This was my daughter.Vincent and I named her Dorothy, and we called her Dolly. She was our lucky star. The year she turned two, Vincent got his wish and founded his own Family, becoming a Don.He was Don Hale, and I was his Donna.Dolly grew day by day, and before long seven years had passed and she was starting grade school.I c

But no matter how she begged, I didn't look back.I said quietly, "Is that so? I gave up on you a long time ago.""Don't forget." I bit out the words. "You're the one who said it. I'll be useless when I'm old. This family doesn't feed freeloaders.""It's not true! None of it's true! I was just angry!"She screamed it, frantic and afraid. "I said it on purpose to make you mad! It wasn't the honest truth!""Oh?"I gave a cold laugh. "That can't be right. You're an honest girl, remember? You told me again and again it was the truth.""Not once, not three times, but..." I laid each word down. "Every single time."Nina didn't answer. She couldn't, I think. She'd dug this hole herself, and now she'd fallen straight into it.The moment the door closed, I let out a long breath.Vincent pulled me in, sighed, and rubbed my back. "She’s just an ungrateful ingrate through and through. All those years of kindness, and not a scrap of it stuck.""Don't grieve over it. Treat it like a nightmare you've

Looking at Nina's face, I couldn't help thinking back to three days before. She'd openly threatened a classmate she didn't like, saying she'd bring a gun the next day and shoot him dead.It took me endless talking to convince the teacher it was just something she'd said in anger. But she held it against me, and went on at me every day."Honest truth, Mommy, I think you're completely useless.""I don't like that kid, and not only did you not stand up for me, you apologized to him.""People online say If you can’t protect your children, you shouldn’t have them."I'd explained to her a hundred times that violence is the very last resort.Besides, she and the boy had only been arguing over which character in some cartoon was more likeable. There was nothing for me to avenge. But none of it got through. She just held her grudge and looked for ways to get back at me.I sighed, and my mind came back to the present."Nina, whether I ever abused you, you know perfectly well in your own heart. A

The man stared me down, smiling like a snake."You think an adoption's a game? You can just decide you're done?""Until a judge says otherwise, you keep her whether you want her or not! You don't want her? What makes you think I do?"His eyes lingered on the sapphire at my throat, and he ran his tongue over the corner of his mouth."Rich as you are, and after abusing my daughter all these years, it'd hardly be right if you didn't pay up. Would it?"Vincent and I exchanged a look that said the same thing. “There it is.”Seven years ago, the forty thousand hadn't satisfied this pair of junkies. They'd wanted four million to call it even, and only vanished when other creditors hunted them into a corner."You fobbed me off with that paltry sum back then.""Now you want me to take her off your hands? You'll make up the difference." The man's eyes rolled, and then he said it. "Five million!"The woman put out her hand too."That's right, not a cent less! Pay up!"I gave a cold laugh. No wond
