Chapter 3

Autor: Goodtale
George did not even come home that night.

The next day, the doorbell suddenly rang three times in quick succession, loud and impatient.

I assumed it was another food delivery Zoe had ordered, so I hurried over to answer it.

When I opened the door, Michelle was standing there.

Beside her was her son, who was a year older than Zoe.

I immediately tried to shut the door, but Michelle blocked it with her hand.

“Since you won’t cooperate, Olivia, I figured Steve and I would come over and have this conversation here.”

“I told you already, I have nothing to say to you. This is my home, and you’re not welcome here.”

The corner of her mouth pulled up in a half-smile. Then, she raised her voice.

“Olivia, if you don’t want to talk inside, we can do it right here in the hallway. I don’t know any of your neighbors, so I’m not the one who has anything to be embarrassed about.”

Right on cue, Mrs. Gluck from across the hall opened her door and poked her head out.

“Olivia, you have friends visiting?”

I forced an awkward smile and stepped aside to let Michelle and Steve in.

Zoe’s bedroom door was closed, so I led them into the study, where the walls were thick enough that she would not hear us.

“All right. What exactly do you want? I’m not divorcing George and walking away with nothing.”

Michelle settled comfortably onto the couch, as if she owned the place.

“Olivia, you really don’t know when to give up, do you? Fine. I’ll have George come over and tell you himself.

“We had quite a night, so he’s probably only just gotten up and finished dealing with a few things for work.”

She glanced at her watch and smiled at me. “Give him ten minutes, Olivia. George bought me a place right here in the neighborhood, so it won’t take him long to get here.”

My heart sank. When I spoke, my voice was ice-cold.

“You really are shameless. Your own son is sitting right there. Have you no decency?”

She merely waved a hand dismissively.

Steve leaned back on the couch and dozed off.

George showed up less than ten minutes later.

He walked straight into the study, pushed the door open, and frowned at me.

“Olivia, your unreasonable attitude is getting really tiresome. Michelle cried all night because of you. You owe her an apology.”

I looked at him and tried to explain.

I said, “George, she was the one who asked to see me yesterday. I didn’t say anything harsh to her.”

His expression only hardened with impatience.

“Olivia, now you’re lying too? What, Michelle just sat there and made herself cry? Do you even hear how ridiculous you sound?

“If you’re going to make something up, at least make it believable. You’re just as hopeless as your daughter.”

My voice hardened. He could say whatever he wanted about me, but not about my daughter.

“George, she’s your daughter too! You don’t get to talk about her like that!”

He walked past me and sank onto the couch between Michelle and Steve. The three of them looked almost like they were posing for a family photo.

“I’m not wasting my time arguing with you. The fact remains that she’s useless. She’s no daughter of mine.”

He looked up at me with such coldness that I hardly recognized the man I had shared nearly three decades of my life with.

“Our family bloodline nearly died out because of you. All these years, and you couldn’t even give me a son! I’m done with you.

“If it weren’t for Michelle, Mom would’ve spent the rest of her life with resentment because of you.

“You were never the wife I needed, never the daughter-in-law my mother wanted, and you raised a daughter who can’t even function on her own.

“Take your useless daughter and get out of my house. Neither of you is getting a cent from me!”

Before I could say another word, he grabbed the divorce agreement and flung it straight at my face.

The edge of the paper cut my cheek. It stung.

A chill ran through me as my hands began to tremble.

I had thought that he would at least feel a little guilty.

I had thought that some part of him would still feel responsible for Zoe and me, or at least have a hard time letting us go.

However, all these years, I had been the only one fooling myself.

I had no idea what I was supposed to do.

I stood there alone against them, completely at a loss and fighting to hold back my tears.

Then, the door suddenly opened.

Zoe walked over to my side with a yawn. She gently wiped the tears from my face.

Then, she flung a thick stack of papers at George and Michelle.

“You’ve got some nerve throwing things at your own father! You…”

A few people in the audience laughed.I laughed too. Little by little, my voice grew steadier. “But eventually, I learned the truth. All those things I thought made her helpless were really her attempts to protect me. She slept all day because she was up at night taking meetings with clients overseas. “She made me peel her oranges because she did not want me to realize just how much she was actually handling on her own.“She let me believe she couldn’t take care of anything, while quietly taking care of everything that truly mattered. I’m incredibly lucky to have a daughter like her. I’m sorry she had to carry so much of it alone.”I lowered the pages and looked at Zoe, who was standing in the front row.She waved at me enthusiastically. Her eyes were already red with tears.“Zoe, from now on, I’m going to learn how to protect you too. You and I, we’re going to build a good life together.”The room erupted in applause.Zoe ran up onto the stage and wrapped her arms around me

I did not go.Zoe went in my place. When she came home, she brought the final court papers with her.“The divorce is final. You got the house and the remaining marital accounts. “The six-point-seven million George spent on Michelle has been recovered and credited back to you. He also pleaded guilty in the corporate fraud case and got five years.“Michelle’s case was handled separately. She got three years for her part in the scheme.”She recited all of this in the same tone she might have used to read off a grocery list.I took the judgment from her and ran my fingers over George’s name. After twenty-eight years of marriage, all that remained between us was a court verdict with his name on it.“Did he say anything?”Zoe tilted her head and thought for a moment.“He asked me to tell you he was sorry. He said he regretted everything.”I nodded, folded the papers neatly, and put them away in a drawer.“I see. Zoe, what do you think he regrets?”Zoe leaned against me and gave

Zoe sighed.“I kept thinking that whatever else he was, he was still your husband. Maybe he’d come to his senses, and we could still have some kind of family. “Instead, he only got worse. Then, he had the nerve to bring his mistress and her son right into our home.”She looked at me. Her eyes were bright with an almost childlike hint of pride.“Mom, you don’t have to be scared anymore. I have money, a company, and an entire team behind me. “As for that promotion he’s so proud of, and all those connections he thinks he has, I know exactly where they came from. He’s not going to get away with what he did.”I opened my mouth. I still had so many questions for her. However, when I saw the exhaustion around her eyes, I could not bring myself to ask even one.She had kept all of this from me for years. She had let me believe she was a hopeless freeloader, all because she did not want me to worry.I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close.“Zoe, I’m sorry. All this time,

Still on the floor, Michelle loosened her grip on my legs and began pleading desperately. Her voice broke between sobs.I took a step back as I felt a wave of disgust rising in my stomach.“Don’t touch me.”Zoe immediately pulled me away and stepped in front of me.“Now you’re begging, Michelle? You weren’t so humble when you barged into our home with your son.“You certainly weren’t worried about Mom’s feelings when you had George trying to force her into signing those divorce papers. It’s too late.”As soon as she said that, the sound of police sirens came from the street. The sirens grew louder as they approached, then cut off somewhere below. A moment later, hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway outside. George shoved Michelle aside and rushed over to Zoe. Then, his legs seemed to give out. He sank to his knees in front of her.“Name your price! Whatever you want, I’ll pay it! Just drop the charges! Zoe, I’m your father! You can’t do this to me!”He clutched at th

“You’re right about one thing. Having an affair by itself isn’t going to cost you everything. But wasting marital assets on your mistress? That’s a very different story.”She opened one of the files and slid a page across the table toward George.“Starting four years ago, you were transferring fifty thousand dollars a month to Michelle. After you took over those projects, you doubled it to one hundred thousand. “Then, there were vacations, gifts, jewelry, and all the other extras. Altogether, you’ve spent about six-point-seven million dollars on her.”“That money came out of marital income and assets. “You secretly funneled millions to the woman you were having an affair with, and Mom’s attorney can ask the court to credit every bit of that against you when the marital estate is divided.”George’s breathing grew ragged. His chest heaved violently. “But that was my salary.”“Your salary is joint marital property.”Zoe’s tone was completely flat, as if she were reading from a

Michelle’s lips trembled. When she finally spoke, her voice cracked.“Wh-What did they say?”“They said you and George only started sleeping together four years ago. For the twenty years before that, you were the one throwing yourself at him. “George barely gave you the time of day. If you hadn’t used your son to pressure him, he never would’ve chosen you.”Michelle whipped around to look at George. Tears welled up in her eyes. “George, that’s not true, is it?”George avoided her gaze. His throat bobbed as he swallowed. His fingers tightened around the arm of the couch.Zoe kept going.“Michelle, you didn’t actually think George was with you because he loved you, did you? Take a look at the paternity test.”She rifled through the papers on the table, pulled out one document, and tossed it in front of Steve.“Steve, you’re twenty-four. Your mom told you George was your father. But over twenty years ago, George wasn’t even sleeping with her. So, how exactly could you be his s
