Chapter 3

Author: E. L. Knox
Close to midnight, when the whole manor had finally gone quiet, Marcus slipped into the basement.

He didn't even reach the cell before the stench hit him.

A werewolf's nose was a hundred times sharper than a human's. The closer he came to the cell, the stronger the stench became.

He saw dark, reddish fluid pooled beneath the door, with tiny white worms writhing in it.

His wolf howled in his head. "That is the smell of death! Get out of here!"

My spirit drifted in front of him. "Marcus, don't go in. What's inside will haunt your dreams."

He was a decent man. He had spoken for me once, but as a butler, his words carried no weight against an Alpha.

Perhaps it was his wolf's instinct. Marcus actually stumbled back a few steps and fled the basement.

The next morning at breakfast, Dad was beaming. He opened the safe, took out a velvet box, and placed it in front of Kate.

"Sweetheart, happy birthday! You're 18 years old now. This is your gift."

Kate's face lit up as she opened the box. Inside was a solid gold wolf-shaped brooch, the kind only the Alpha's bloodline could wear. It was finer and more valuable than the one Mom had left me.

"Goodness! Dad, this is too much!"

"You deserve only the best. Ava's necklace could never compare. Tonight, you'll be the brightest star at the party!"

Kate held the brooch and nodded so hard her hair bounced. "I'm so lucky!"

Marcus stepped forward, looking pale as chalk. "Alpha Jack, it's time to release Ava."

Dad frowned. "Mind your place, Marcus."

"Alpha Jack, today makes seven days. The cell is lined in silver. No werewolf survives long in there."

He already knew that I was dead. The reek from last night had told him the truth. Right under their feet was a decaying body.

"Dad, I'm sure Ava knows she was wrong," Kate chimed in. "Please forgive her."

When Dad heard her words, his face softened at once. "Fine. I'll let her out for Kate's sake. But I'll sever our blood ties and kick her out of the manor. I won't acknowledge such a vicious daughter."

What a joke! He only became the Alpha with the support of Mom's family. Without the title, he was just a man who depended on her.

Now, he could add one more title—the executioner who killed his own daughter.

Once the order was given, Marcus gathered some house staff and headed for the basement.

After just one night, the stench had grown heavier, enough to make one's stomach churn. The smell of death was everywhere.

The staff covered their noses with their sleeves. The youngest among them crumpled to his knees, gagging violently.

"Goodness, this smell is killing me!"

"There's something dead in there, I swear!"

Dad and Katherine were the last to arrive, both wrinkling their noses at the smell. Yet, the moment he saw his staff in chaos, he straightened and wore the posture of an Alpha once more.

"Enough! That wretch is doing this just to disgust us! Of course, it reeks after seven days in the cell. Pry the door open! Drag her out! Anyone who disobeys can go live as a Rogue!"

The staff shakily levered the silver door open.

In the dark cell, I hung from silver chains. My body was so ruined that it could no longer be called a werewolf's.

Pure silver had driven decay like fire. My body had swelled and twisted as flesh sloughed away to expose bare bone, and the skull was the worst of all.

Before I died, I had smashed my head against the wall until my skull cracked, leaving nothing but a blur of blood and flesh.

My eyes stayed wide open, burning with fury that had nowhere left to go.

The sound of gagging erupted behind Dad. The staff broke apart, covering their mouths as they turned away.

Dad stepped closer, staring at the body hanging from the chains. His eyes bulged in horror. "What the hell is that?"

He stared at the mangled flesh, where bone shards jutted out, looking unnaturally white. Even I couldn't deny how disgusting it looked.

Marcus' voice broke as he finally yelled, "Alpha Jack, it's Ava! She's dead!"

Dad's eyes widened in disbelief.

Nelson stepped forward, and Dad shifted half of his body, fangs pushing past his lips."This is sorcery!" he snarled. "Some witch is framing me! It's fake! That's not Ava! It's not! It's not!"The witch shook her head. "This isn't sorcery. The grievance runs too deep. Her wolf is still trapped and refusing to leave."She began the rite, and the air shimmered until a ghostly image formed.Everyone saw me in that sealed cell, smashing my head against the wall while silver seared my skin and my wolf died screaming."Stop!" Dad sobbed, covering his eyes. The vision didn't stop. With the last of my strength, I smeared a bloody word on the wall—"Dad".When the enforcers swept the room, they found the writing, dried to a black stain."She was calling for you before she died," Nelson said.Dad folded at the knees and clutched what was left of me, howling. He couldn't deny it anymore. This was his daughter, locked in by his command and tortured to death. Then, his control snapped. Hi

My spirit was practically buzzing, darting from one side of the hall to the other."Yes! The basement! Right there!" I urged them where they couldn't see. "My body is in the cell!"The enforcers fanned out around the stairwell, but Dad planted himself in the way."This is my private property!" he snapped. "You don't have a warrant!"Nelson produced a parchment stamped with a crimson seal. "Special order, signed by the Alpha King. When a pureblood goes missing, we can search anywhere."Just then, Kate came clattering down the stairs with a phone in her hand."Wait!" she called, waving the screen. "Ava just shared her live location! She's at the abandoned factory up north!"A blinking dot crawled across the map.Half the team went after it, yet the old witch and the necromancer both shook their heads."You can't fool me," the witch said. "You can move a phone, but not a soul. Ava's soul is trapped here in the manor, beneath our feet, sobbing in the dark."Dad balled his fists.

"Per pack law, Ava Blackwood must present herself immediately," Nelson announced, his voice carrying through the hall. "If she doesn't, her inheritance is forfeit!""That wretch ran a long time ago!" Dad snapped. "I'm looking for her, too!"The enforcers changed tactics and set up a blood-sense array, the kind only werewolves could use. They brought in the most feared tracker in Southville, a 300-year-old witch who once located a missing Alpha for the Alpha King.In the center of the manor, the witch drew a large lunar chart and sprinkled it with a few drops of the Alpha King's blood."Let me see where she is," she murmured, closing her eyes as she began to chant in the old tongue.Suddenly, her eyes shot open, and her pupils went white."It's strange... Very strange..." she whispered, her voice shaking. "Ava's life-fire is extinguished, yet something is mimicking her.""Nonsense!" Dad roared. "She just committed a crime! Old hag, did you take her money?""Shut up!" The witch'

"Katherine!" Dad lunged and scooped her up in a panic. This time, she wasn't faking it. Kate had laced her prenatal tonic with wolfsbane."Help me! Please, save my pup!" Katherine sobbed, clutching her belly. The enforcers had no choice but to call in the healers, and the search was put on hold.Outside the operating room, Dad smashed a fist into the wall again and again. "This is Ava's doing! She cursed my son!"Kate stood in a shadowed corner, her eyes cold and full of malice. She was wiping out every rival, including the pup Katherine was carrying."It's so touching," I said into the empty air. "Your mom injected me with silver to kill me, and you poisoned your mom to keep the inheritance all to yourself!"Three hours later, the operating room doors swung open. The pup had made it, but Katherine almost bled out on the table."It's all Ava's doing..." she whispered, looking gray with shock. "She's cursing us...""When she comes back, I'll cut her to pieces!" Dad snarled.I

Later that night, Kate slipped into my room, rifled through my drawers, and dug out the gift from my 18th birthday. It was a vial of the Alpha King's blood, an heirloom passed down through Mom's line. One drink could double a werewolf's strength, making it invaluable."This belongs to me now," she murmured, her eyes gleaming as she cradled the vial. Then, she grabbed my phone and, using a special reagent distilled from my tissue taken off the corpse, spoofed the bio-lock and slid right in.She texted my best friend, Susan Reed. "Don't look for me. I'm running away with my new boyfriend. Don't tell my dad."Then, she emailed my professor, Kenneth Langley. "I'm withdrawing. I don't want to study anymore."And worst of all, she posted on the pack forum from my account. "My dad has always loved Katherine. He only married my mom to use her."It would smear Dad's reputation, yet everyone would think I wrote it."The dead should stay dead," Kate said, smiling as she wiped every photo

Marcus and the staff were shaking so hard that no one dared step within a yard of the body.He drew a long breath, unpinned the silver badge that marked him as butler, and let it clatter to the stone."I'm done," he said. "The rest of you should go, too, while you still can."That broke the dam. One by one, they sided with him.If the Alpha could kill his own daughter, who knew when their turn might come?"I'm leaving, too! An Alpha who raises a cruel hand against his own daughter isn't worthy of our loyalty!""By the Moon Goddess, a man who kills his own daughter will be cursed!"In just an hour, the manor was empty, with every one of the staff gone. When Dad returned that evening, he called repeatedly for someone to serve him, but no one came.At last, Kate appeared with a glass of red wine in hand."Dad, the staff are all gone," she said."What? All of them?" He couldn't believe it."They said they could smell death in the manor and fled. We don't even have a cook now,"
