Chapter 8

Author: SafeTree
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed, my body covered in monitors and tubes.

As I tried to sit up, Jonah walked in.

"Don't move!"

He hurried to my bedside and gently helped me into a sitting position. His eyes were bloodshot, as though he'd just been crying. "Jenna, why didn't you tell me you were this sick?"

"It wouldn't have changed anything. There's no cure anyway. If you really feel guilty about everything you've done to me, then let me leave the hospital.

  • My Departure Drove Them Mad   Chapter 9

After wallowing in despair for several days, I suddenly turned to Jonah."You were right. As long as I don't give up, there's still hope. I should keep fighting."Jonah, who had been working beside my bed, jerked his head up. His eyes lit up with joy."Jenna, you've finally come around."Liam immediately set his book aside and hurried to my bedside. He reached up and gently patted my head. "Don't worry, Mommy. I'll stay right here with you. I'll help you get better, I promise."I smiled and nodded.Jonah and Liam both let out sighs of relief, believing that I had finally turned a corner. In the days that followed, I threw myself into treatment with a cheerful face and a cooperative spirit, as though I had somehow transformed back into the woman I once was.Jonah smiled more often too.He painted a picture of our future without end, describing how the three of us would traverse the globe once I had recovered. Our wealth, he insisted, was more than we could ever exhaust. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed, my body covered in monitors and tubes. As I tried to sit up, Jonah walked in."Don't move!"He hurried to my bedside and gently helped me into a sitting position. His eyes were bloodshot, as though he'd just been crying. "Jenna, why didn't you tell me you were this sick?""It wouldn't have changed anything. There's no cure anyway. If you really feel guilty about everything you've done to me, then let me leave the hospital. I don't want to spend what little time I have left trapped in here.""No! You're not going to die. I'll do whatever it takes to cure you!"My heart sank. This was what I'd been dreading. I couldn't let anything stop me from going home.Jonah was resolute. He embarked on a worldwide search for the foremost experts in brain tumor treatment. Eventually, he found one. After reviewing my medical records, the doctor shook his head gravely. "I've been practicing medicine for 30 years, and I hav

Suzanne immediately gave him an address, and Jonah turned the wheel to drive there without a second thought."The plane's about to take off," I said softly.A vein throbbed at Jonah's temple as he barked, "At a time like this, you're still thinking about your vacation? Didn't you hear Suz? She's in danger! Jenna, can you stop being so selfish for once?"Liam glanced hesitantly between us before ultimately siding with his father. "Mommy, we can go to Costa Perila any time. Suz needs us right now. We can't just turn our backs on her."I nodded and gestured for Jonah to pull over. Then, I opened the door and got out.He sighed in exasperation. "Do you really have to do this?"I slammed the car door shut without even bothering to answer.Seconds later, the car disappeared down the road.I headed to the airport alone. After settling into my seat on the plane, I checked my phone one last time before switching it off. Suzanne had posted another update. The post included a photo ta

Panic flashed through Suzanne's eyes, and she hurriedly explained, "I didn't mean anything by it. I just wanted to document our daily life. Those people online were the ones making wild guesses.""And besides, children say all sorts of things. Liam's only seven years old. No one actually believes a kid's words carry any weight. I'd bet no mother would. But here we are, making a scene at such an important event. I honestly don't understand what Jenna was trying to do."She brushed it off like it was nothing, and in a few casual sentences, she'd managed to make me the problem again.Jonah's attention shifted away from her and landed back on me. I let out a cold, humorless laugh.Without another glance at them, I turned and walked toward the exit.Jonah quickly caught up and grabbed my arm. "I'll drive you home."I pulled my hand away. "No, thanks."Jonah's expression turned sour. "Jenna! What is your problem? Do you have any idea how important tonight is to me?"The whole point o

Jonah spotted me at a glance, lying motionless at the bottom of the pool. He grabbed my hand and hauled me up.When he dragged me onto the pool deck, he saw the blood. It was pouring out fast, dripping off my face like I'd been hit. Before long, the red was all over my face.Jonah cupped my face with shaking hands. He said my name over and over, like he was trying to wake me from a sleep I might never come out of.Liam, who had been standing nearby, was frozen in shock as well. He rushed over, grabbed my hand, and cried out, "Mommy! Mommy, what's wrong with you?"Just as Jonah reached for his phone to dial an ambulance, I grabbed his hand.I slowly opened my eyes, covered my nose, and shook my head. "I'm fine.""How can you possibly be fine after losing that much blood?"I explained that I'd hit my nose on the way in, and that was what caused the bleeding. If I went to the hospital, Jonah would discover the tumor in my brain. I just wanted to slip away quietly, without dragging

Maybe my attitude finally pissed them off. Jonah and Liam didn't come home for an entire week.Fine by me. I didn't need the company anyway. The tumor wasn't being so generous, though. Every day I woke up, things were a little fuzzier. My hands didn't grip like they used to. My feet dragged more than they should. And somehow, that made me happy. Each day I got worse meant I was one day closer to being done with all of this.Suzanne updated her social media account every day. She documented all the places they had visited that week.Someone commented asking if they were her family.Liam said yes. He said she was his mom.I stared at the screen. Then, a drop of blood hit it—right over his words. It seemed like I was liking the post in the most messed up way.I held my nose and walked to the bathroom. Suddenly, my phone rang from the sink.It was Jonah. After a whole week of silence, he was finally calling. He said there was a charity gala tomorrow night and he needed me to co
