Chapter 4

作者: Jersey Wind
Soon, several new manservants were sent to Stargazing Tower.

One of them was a proud man who was jealous that I could serve Jaela at her side.

I was serving Jaela tea with one knee on the ground one day when he knocked me from behind on purpose. My arms shook, and the sleeve of my coarse shirt brushed Jaela's snow-white dress by accident, leaving behind a very faint trace of dust.

Jaela smashed her cup on the spot. When the burning tea splashed on the back of my hand, turning my skin red, I did not even flinch.

The servant knelt right away, pointing at me and exclaiming, "Please be appeased, Your Eminence! This lowly servant was trying to seduce you. He has always been known to be shameless in his actions."

I looked up, wanting to explain, "Your Eminence, I…"

Jaela did not even give me a chance to explain. She looked at the trace of dust with clear disgust.

"Take it off and burn it," she ordered the acolyte next to her coldly.

After that, she stood up and walked away without looking back, and her icy tone came down on me hard. "You're just a lowly, unrefined manservant who is nothing but a speck of dirt in my eyes. Kneel outside. You're not allowed to get up without my permission."

I remained on my knees, watching her white robe flutter in the wind as she left. My head was lowered as I clenched my fists. "Yes, Your Eminence."

For six hours, I remained kneeling under the hot sun. My knees were numb, and I did not stop cursing her silently. Who cares if she was a deity born on earth? I no longer wanted to be in her service, and fortunately, my wish came true.

After suffering under three hellish masters, I was finally 25.

According to the rules of the kingdom, servants who reach the age of 25 may accept the grace of the Palace to leave and marry should their masters choose not to keep them.

I hugged my box of gold coins, thinking about my huge mansion in the South, roasted chicken, and freedom.

To ensure that I could leave successfully and not be restrained by the cunning Lord Stewards of the royal household, I got the help of a palace maid from the same village as me. Her name was Celia Truss, and she was a simple, honest woman who needed money for her younger brother's illness.

I struck a deal with her.

"Pretend that we're childhood lovers who have been engaged to marry since we were young. We'll accept the palace's grace to allow us to leave the palace and get married. After we leave, we'll split the settlement and personal allowance given by the royal household in two, then go our separate ways."

Celia's eyes lit up. She nodded and said, "You can count on me, Jasper! I'll make sure my act is so realistic that no one will suspect a thing!"

We hit it off right away, and our plan was flawless.

…

The night before I left the palace, I sat in my small, cramped room, counting my gold coins again under the weak light of the candle flames. I had a silly smile on my face, feeling happy, when someone suddenly pushed my door open.

A cold gust of wind blew into the room, and I caught a whiff of the light scent of sandalwood.

I wiped my smile off my face right away and instinctively hid my bag behind me.

It was someone in a clean, white robe without a speck of dust on it. Jaela was here. Why would she come to the quarters of a lowly servant, where it was considered dirty to her?

Jaela looked uncomfortable in my room, and she kept frowning. She stared at me, and I could tell there was a subtle tense tone in her usually aloof voice. "I heard from the royal household that you will be leaving the palace tomorrow."

I stood up and bowed respectfully. "Yes, Your Eminence. I am already 25 and have accepted the Palace's grace to release me from the Palace tomorrow. I am grateful to you for guiding me over the past years."

Jaela inhaled sharply. She closed the door behind her and made me an offer as if she was giving me a great gift, a tone she often took with me. "I need a study valet, and if you're willing to stay, you will never need to do laborious work anymore. You will only serve me in the study from now on."

I was taken aback, but I quickly lowered my head. "I am a lowly, unrefined man who does not dare contaminate the eyes of the great high priestess. Moreover… I will be leaving tomorrow to marry Celia. Our wedding date has been set, and I implore Your Eminence to grant me this wish."

Jaela turned pale, and my words and her grip on her emerald fan got tighter. There was a crack, and the valuable fan broke in her hands. "Marry? Who gave you permission to get married?"

  • My Departure Gave the Noblewomen Nervous Breakdowns   Chapter 10

It started when I realized that I had led a much too comfortable life and the mansion was too large for me to manage on my own. So, I got my housekeeper to find a few people in the market to help with the chores.I needed an accountant, a guard, and a scholar. Even though I was not taking any exams, I enjoyed listening to others read stories for me. My demands were simple. They had to be cheap and obedient. It took only a few days for the housekeeper to bring them to me.I was sitting in my chair, wiping down my broadsword when I swept a gaze at the new hires. It was only a glance, but it was enough for me to almost drop my broadsword. What a small world, or should I say, what thick skin these three women had. The one on the far left was the newly hired accountant. She was in a plain, green cotton dress that had been washed so many times it was almost white, and she looked pale as a sheet of paper. She was also clutching a bloodstained handkerchief."Mr. Hoard."She held her he

There was dead silence in front of the palace gates. All of the guards were frightened by the sight, and they knelt on the ground, not daring to look up.Maxine, Helena, and Jaela were surrounding me and blocking my way from the palace gates. They glared at each other, badly wanting to cut one another into pieces. When they turned to look at me, the murderous looks in their eyes turned into pathetic pleading. Maxine could hardly stand from her violent coughing. The blood on the corner of her lips was barely dry when she tried to reach out to me, saying in a broken voice, "Don't go… I'm begging you. Please stay…"Helena's feet were still bleeding, and she stood on her bloody footprints with tears in her eyes. She stared at me like an abandoned orphan as she said, "You lied to me. You told me you'd always be by my side…"Jaela was heaving, and her aloof eyes were watery. She clenched her fist and said in a trembling voice, "I'll marry you. I'll give you everything I have as my dow

I stood up and looked at Helena, who was still on the ground. "Your Highness, did you think that I let you use my body for warmth because I took pity on you?" I burst out with a laugh. "It was only because a noble's servant had paid me in silver to spy on you, wanting to know if you were dead. The only reason I gave you my coal for fire was that if you died, I would lose my long-term income.'Helena trembled, looking at me in despairing disbelief with her reddened eyes. Finally, I turned to Jaela. I smiled tauntingly. "As for you, Your Eminence. Do you really think I collected dew every morning to wipe the floor and tolerated your obsession with hygiene because I idolized you for being a deity on earth? "It was because the salary at Stargazing Tower is double the amount of all other work in the palace and has the highest reward for servants at every festivity."I walked to my bed and picked up my heavy bag. I opened up a small gap to show everyone the contents. The bag was fil

Helena and Jaela, who were entangled in a fight, stopped. All three of us looked in the direction of the door.It was Crown Princess Maxine, who was staggering through the door with the help of her palace maids. She was still wearing her coat and was only in a thin, yellow nightgown. Her pale, sickly face looked even paler and had no color in it.She pushed her maids aside and stumbled through my door on her own, clutching a scroll in her hand. It was the edict for my release from the palace.Maxine used all of her strength to tear the edict in front of all of us in half. Her knuckles turned purple from using all her strength, and she stared at me pleadingly with despair. "You won't be able to leave now."I stared at the two halves of the edict and finally frowned. I had paid a lot of money to get my hands on that edict! My expression turned cold. "What do you mean by this, Your Highness?"Maxine did not reply, but she suddenly started coughing violently. Blood splattered from h

"A charlatan like you has no right to interfere in my business!" Helena ignored Jaela as she stepped through the door, coming straight at me.She moved surprisingly fast, and before I could pull out my dagger, she already had me by the collar, and I was shoved hard against the wall. Her cold blade was pressed against my neck, and the blood from its previous victim flowed down my collarbone, drenching my collar. It was sticky and disgusting.Helena stared right into my eyes, enraged. Her voice quivered, "Who gave you the courage to get married?!"My back was against the cold wall, and a sword was pressed against my neck, but I was not afraid. I was not afraid of death when Maxine fed me poison that burned me internally. Why would I be afraid of her sword?I stared blankly at her crazed demeanor. "Your Highness, I am now of age to accept the palace's grace to leave and get married. These are all in accordance with palace regulations.""To hell with palace regulations!"Helena punch

Jaela suddenly lost her composure, and I saw panic and disbelief in her usually aloof eyes. Her fingers gripped my shoulders like clamps with unusual force.I looked at her like she was crazy. Was this still the deity on earth who never allowed anyone to even touch the corner of her dress? Her grip was heavy on my shoulders, and I shrugged her grip off with great difficulty. "Please have some self-respect, Your Eminence."My words were like a slap to Jaela, as she quickly pulled her hand away from me, but she continued staring at my face. She was heaving, and her usually cold and distant expression was replaced by fluster and anxiousness."You can't marry that palace maid," she said through clenched teeth.I found this funny. "I'm old enough to take a wife, and I'm of age to leave the palace. It's normal for me to want to marry a woman from my village. Why can't I marry her?""She's not good enough for you!" Jaela suddenly raised her voice, looking at me anxiously and in disbelie
