Chapter 3

Penulis: Jersey Wind
Occasionally, I would give in to Helena's request because I thought that she and I were considered poor souls who at least had each other in this icy palace that devoured the weak.

This continued until three years later, when she secretly healed her eyes and contacted her old subordinates to finally take back everything that belonged to her. When the gates of the Outer Keep opened and the sun shone in, she emerged in a brand-new royal robe as she stood in the sun.

I was overjoyed. I thought that my meal ticket had been upgraded, and I went to her for a reward.

However, I did not even have the chance to say a word when I appeared in front of Helena because she suddenly reached out to grab me by the collar.

Helena was highly skilled in combat, and she pushed me hard against the walls of the Outer Keep. Intense pain spread over my back as I gripped her wrist hard, staring back at her coldly.

Helena looked at me with disdain. Her eyes, once filled with fear and longing for someone's warmth, were now clear and filled with something sinister. She looked back at me with a taunting sneer.

"How dare you covet the true heart of your master when you're just a mere pawn? Do you think I'll be grateful just because of what you did for me in the Outer Keep? Do you really think you're somebody important when all you are is just a slave to money?"

My expression was cold, and I said nothing. The veins on the back of my hand throbbed as I tried to escape from her grip.

"Get lost. Never show your cheap, despicable face in front of me again, or I'll dig your eyes out."

She suddenly released me, and I fell heavily to the ground, coughing up blood and wiping my lips coldly.

Helena did not give me another glance as she marched off grandly with her subordinates, leaving behind the Outer Keep.

I got up to pat the dirt off my clothes.

At that moment, I realized that no one in the royal family truly cared for anyone. The blood in their veins was cold.

I was just a lowly manservant who worked for money. When my master was healed and no longer needed me to care for her, I would just change my job. I would be crazy to think that I was special like the male lead in storybooks.

That night, I used the money Helena's enemies paid me to buy myself a big drumstick from the royal kitchen. My lips were greasy from gobbling it down. It tasted really good.

Unfortunately, there was a storm outside, and the raindrops fell on my drumstick through the leaking roof, making it taste a little salty.

After Helena retained her status as the ninth princess, I lost my job working at the Outer Keep.

To make up for the sudden lack of extra income, I bribed the Lord Steward of the royal household, and he arranged for me to work at Stargazing Tower. I was in charge of serving the high priestess, Jaela Sanguine.

The monthly salary for working at Stargazing Tower was very high. It was double the salary of other palace work, and the opportunity to make extra money was abundant.

However, Jaela was a difficult master to satisfy. She was like a deity born to earth, pure and distant from the corruption of the world. She was also very particular about hygiene to a point of obsession.

I would wake up every day at 5 am to collect dew for her and wipe every floor in Stargazing Tower three times. I had to make sure the tea I made for her was the right temperature, and even when pouring her tea, the curve of the pour had to be just right.

Work was exhausting, but the reward at Stargazing Tower was also the highest in the palace. So, I tolerated everything for money. I made sure to know and understand all of her temperaments and behaviors, and my work was flawless.

Jaela seemed happy with me too. There were several quiet afternoons when she would be reading while I moved boxes of old scriptures that she would suddenly decide to teach me to read a few words.

Once, I broke a stick off a tree in the royal garden and was chewing it when she looked up to see what I was doing. She stared at me for a while, and in a rare moment, I saw a flash of warmth in her usual aloof eyes.

Jaela said softly, "If you choose to, you may stay at Stargazing Tower as long as you want."

I was moved, and even made the mistake of thinking that I finally had a normal master who treated her servant like a proper human being.

  • My Departure Gave the Noblewomen Nervous Breakdowns   Chapter 10

It started when I realized that I had led a much too comfortable life and the mansion was too large for me to manage on my own. So, I got my housekeeper to find a few people in the market to help with the chores.I needed an accountant, a guard, and a scholar. Even though I was not taking any exams, I enjoyed listening to others read stories for me. My demands were simple. They had to be cheap and obedient. It took only a few days for the housekeeper to bring them to me.I was sitting in my chair, wiping down my broadsword when I swept a gaze at the new hires. It was only a glance, but it was enough for me to almost drop my broadsword. What a small world, or should I say, what thick skin these three women had. The one on the far left was the newly hired accountant. She was in a plain, green cotton dress that had been washed so many times it was almost white, and she looked pale as a sheet of paper. She was also clutching a bloodstained handkerchief."Mr. Hoard."She held her he

There was dead silence in front of the palace gates. All of the guards were frightened by the sight, and they knelt on the ground, not daring to look up.Maxine, Helena, and Jaela were surrounding me and blocking my way from the palace gates. They glared at each other, badly wanting to cut one another into pieces. When they turned to look at me, the murderous looks in their eyes turned into pathetic pleading. Maxine could hardly stand from her violent coughing. The blood on the corner of her lips was barely dry when she tried to reach out to me, saying in a broken voice, "Don't go… I'm begging you. Please stay…"Helena's feet were still bleeding, and she stood on her bloody footprints with tears in her eyes. She stared at me like an abandoned orphan as she said, "You lied to me. You told me you'd always be by my side…"Jaela was heaving, and her aloof eyes were watery. She clenched her fist and said in a trembling voice, "I'll marry you. I'll give you everything I have as my dow

I stood up and looked at Helena, who was still on the ground. "Your Highness, did you think that I let you use my body for warmth because I took pity on you?" I burst out with a laugh. "It was only because a noble's servant had paid me in silver to spy on you, wanting to know if you were dead. The only reason I gave you my coal for fire was that if you died, I would lose my long-term income.'Helena trembled, looking at me in despairing disbelief with her reddened eyes. Finally, I turned to Jaela. I smiled tauntingly. "As for you, Your Eminence. Do you really think I collected dew every morning to wipe the floor and tolerated your obsession with hygiene because I idolized you for being a deity on earth? "It was because the salary at Stargazing Tower is double the amount of all other work in the palace and has the highest reward for servants at every festivity."I walked to my bed and picked up my heavy bag. I opened up a small gap to show everyone the contents. The bag was fil

Helena and Jaela, who were entangled in a fight, stopped. All three of us looked in the direction of the door.It was Crown Princess Maxine, who was staggering through the door with the help of her palace maids. She was still wearing her coat and was only in a thin, yellow nightgown. Her pale, sickly face looked even paler and had no color in it.She pushed her maids aside and stumbled through my door on her own, clutching a scroll in her hand. It was the edict for my release from the palace.Maxine used all of her strength to tear the edict in front of all of us in half. Her knuckles turned purple from using all her strength, and she stared at me pleadingly with despair. "You won't be able to leave now."I stared at the two halves of the edict and finally frowned. I had paid a lot of money to get my hands on that edict! My expression turned cold. "What do you mean by this, Your Highness?"Maxine did not reply, but she suddenly started coughing violently. Blood splattered from h

"A charlatan like you has no right to interfere in my business!" Helena ignored Jaela as she stepped through the door, coming straight at me.She moved surprisingly fast, and before I could pull out my dagger, she already had me by the collar, and I was shoved hard against the wall. Her cold blade was pressed against my neck, and the blood from its previous victim flowed down my collarbone, drenching my collar. It was sticky and disgusting.Helena stared right into my eyes, enraged. Her voice quivered, "Who gave you the courage to get married?!"My back was against the cold wall, and a sword was pressed against my neck, but I was not afraid. I was not afraid of death when Maxine fed me poison that burned me internally. Why would I be afraid of her sword?I stared blankly at her crazed demeanor. "Your Highness, I am now of age to accept the palace's grace to leave and get married. These are all in accordance with palace regulations.""To hell with palace regulations!"Helena punch

Jaela suddenly lost her composure, and I saw panic and disbelief in her usually aloof eyes. Her fingers gripped my shoulders like clamps with unusual force.I looked at her like she was crazy. Was this still the deity on earth who never allowed anyone to even touch the corner of her dress? Her grip was heavy on my shoulders, and I shrugged her grip off with great difficulty. "Please have some self-respect, Your Eminence."My words were like a slap to Jaela, as she quickly pulled her hand away from me, but she continued staring at my face. She was heaving, and her usually cold and distant expression was replaced by fluster and anxiousness."You can't marry that palace maid," she said through clenched teeth.I found this funny. "I'm old enough to take a wife, and I'm of age to leave the palace. It's normal for me to want to marry a woman from my village. Why can't I marry her?""She's not good enough for you!" Jaela suddenly raised her voice, looking at me anxiously and in disbelie
