#Chapter 11: The Invitation

Lila's POV

Gemma was scrubbing mascara off my cheekbone with a damp cotton pad when my phone buzzed.

"Hold still." She tilted my chin toward the lamp. "You smeared everything when you bolted from the dance floor."

I hadn't bolted. I'd walked. Briskly. With intention.

She didn't need to know that the professor's eyes had bled crimson during the waltz, or that the pull at the base of my spine had been so violent I'd nearly tripped over a speaker cable. I could still feel his hand on my waist, the warmth of his palm seeping through borrowed silk. Some things were better locked away.

My phone buzzed.

I picked it up. A direct message from the forum app. A username I would have recognized from across a crowded screen.

The dom.

The same dom every submissive on the platform had bookmarked. The one who never reached out first.

Same arrangement.Same hotel, 619.

My pulse spiked. Thousands of women would have killed for this message. The most elusive dom on the platform, the man who never contacted anyone twice, had broken his own rule. For me.

But my limbs were heavy with alcohol and the bonfire's smoke still clung to my borrowed dress. My head was throbbing. The last time I'd been alone with this man in a dark room, I'd run before the blindfold even came off.

I'd run again. I knew I would.

I typed: I appreciate it. I'm not feeling well tonight. I'm sorry.

Sent.

I set the phone face-down on the nightstand and waited.

No reply came. Not after five minutes. Not after twenty. Not by the time Gemma turned off the lights and crawled into her bed across the room.

He was angry. Or worse, bored. A man like that wouldn't waste energy on disappointment. He'd scroll to the next willing name, and within the hour, I'd be a footnote he couldn't recall.

That thought shouldn't have stung.

The next morning I pulled on my usual armor: flannel shirt buttoned to the collar, glasses clean, hair in a low bun Gemma called "librarian cosplay."

My literature professor announced the semester project in the first ten minutes. A medieval-era short story. Original work. The top three students would represent the academy at a London literary exchange.

London. I sat straighter in my chair.

"The work must demonstrate command of period voice and psychological complexity," she said. "I want characters who breathe. Not archetypes."

I was drafting before she finished the sentence.

A knight. Not charming. Controlled. The kind of man who commanded a regiment with terrifying precision. A duke's forgotten daughter with no dowry and no wolf. He saves her by accident. She reads it as duty. He dismisses her as beneath notice.

Neither of them is right.

The inspiration was obvious. I'd been watching the combat professor for weeks — his posture, his clipped instructions, the way a room rearranged itself around him before he said a word.

If I was going to write this knight, I needed specifics. His habits. His history. The way he held a fork.

After class, I found him in the campus café. He sat by the window with a laptop and a stack of papers, finishing what sounded like an academic conference call in a voice so flat and authoritative it could have been issuing military commands. He wore a dark gray sweater with the sleeves pushed to his forearms. The cuffs were folded once, precisely even.

I waited until the call ended. Then I walked over, holding my offering in front of me like a shield.

"Professor Aldrich." I set a small paper box on the table. "I made chocolate cake. I heard you liked sweet things."

He looked at the box. Then at me. I braced for the dismissal — the eyebrow, the clipped reminder that baking didn't improve my combat score.

He opened the lid. Inside was a slice of dark chocolate cake with raspberry filling — my mother's recipe, the one I'd been making since I was twelve. The frosting was uneven where I'd rushed it this morning.

"I'm working on a story for my literature assignment," I said quickly. "A medieval knight character. I was hoping I could observe you. Ask a few questions about your background. For research purposes."

Something shifted behind his expression. Not warmth. The absence of refusal.

"Sit."

I sat. My hands were shaking, so I tucked them under my thighs.

He cut a piece of cake with the edge of his fork and tasted it. His face didn't change, but he took a second bite immediately. I counted that as a rave review.

"What do you want to know?"

I pulled out my notebook. I'd prepared questions about his training, his teaching philosophy, what shifting felt like for the first time. Professional. Academic.

I uncapped my pen. But sitting across from him in the warm afternoon light, the questions blurred. I couldn't stop noticing his hands on the table. The width of his wrists. The scar under his chin, the thin white crescent I'd noticed during our dance.

My notebook page was still blank.

"The knight in my story," I began, "is someone who —"

"You're giving me the plot?" One eyebrow went up. "I thought you were here to observe."

Heat rushed up my neck. "I — right. Sorry, I just —"

The café door banged open.

"What the hell are you two doing?"

Derek stood in the doorway, football jersey dark with sweat, gym bag hanging from one fist. He was staring at the chocolate cake between us like it owed him an explanation.

Lila's POVI said yes.My knees still ached from the hospital floor. The bruises on my elbows had turned yellow-green overnight, and when I lifted my arms to pull on a sweater, the scrapes stung. None of that stopped me.The rational part of my brain screamed at me the entire time I was getting ready. This was reckless. This was a stranger from the internet with a reputation for being merciless. But I was a writer. A writer who'd only ever imagined submission had a ceiling. If I wanted to write it real, I needed to feel it.I put on the purple mask. The dom had said not to bring anything. No lingerie. No props. Just myself, on time. I pulled on jeans and a sweater and my worn canvas sneakers, looking exactly like what I was: a literature student heading somewhere she couldn't explain. The address was a villa on the hill above the academy. Wrought-iron gate. Gravel drive. Stone and glass perched on the ridge, larger than my entire dormitory. No lights on inside. The front door was unlo

Lila's POVI bit the hand holding my jaw.My teeth sank in hard enough to taste copper. The man howled and jerked backward, and in the second his grip loosened, I spat. Most of the liquid that had been forced past my lips hit the gravel. Some of it was already burning down my throat.I ran.My legs were shaking. My lungs screamed. I sprinted down the dark path with no destination except away — away from the amber eyes and the vial and the hands that wanted to mark me. Branches slashed my arms. My foot caught a root and I stumbled, caught myself, kept running."Get her!"Footsteps behind me. Fast. Wolf-fast.I opened my mouth to scream for help, but the cloth they'd stuffed in had scraped my throat raw. All that came out was a strangled rasp. The darkness was total. The dormitory lights were a distant glow. Then something massive hit the man closest to me.Not something. A wolf. Enormous, coal-black, broad through the shoulders, moving with a speed that made the air crack. The wolf cau

Derek went to the police station with his chin up and his voice carrying."My father will have me out in ten minutes," he told the officers. "You're wasting your time."I gave my statement in a side room with a female officer who took notes without expression. Yes, he'd grabbed me. Yes, there were witnesses. No, I didn't want to press additional charges — the bonfire harassment complaint was enough. When I stepped outside, a single text from Professor Aldrich waited on my screen. You're not expelled. Don't give me a reason to reconsider. It took me a moment to realize he was joking. Or as close to joking as he got.Thank you, I typed back. I hope I didn't cause you trouble. You can repay me by not failing the midterm.I pocketed the phone. Something warm and stupid spread through my chest. At the station, Derek was not having the quick exit he'd promised.I heard the details over the next few days, secondhand and third-hand, passed down from the football team to the campus security gu

Lila's POVThe café went quiet.Derek crossed the floor in three strides. Students at nearby tables looked up from their laptops. A girl in the corner lowered her coffee cup.He didn't stop until I could smell the grass and sweat on his jersey. His jaw was clenched so tight the muscles in his neck stood out."So this is what you've been doing." His voice was low and ugly. "I thought you were busy training. Turns out you've been baking cakes for your professor."He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the table. My chair scraped against the floor."Let go of me.""When did you start this?" His fingers dug into my bicep. He steered me toward the hallway, away from the staring crowd. "Was it before or after you dumped me? How long have you been sneaking around behind my back like a —""Don't finish that sentence."He finished it anyway. The word hit me like a slap.I looked at him. Really looked. The boy I'd loved for three years, brought coffee to every morning, skipped exams for. The

Lila's POVDerek was staring at my thigh. Not at me. At the mark. His eyebrows were drawn together and his nostrils were flared. He had never left that mark. He had never touched me hard enough to leave anything at all. In three years, he had barely touched me. So who had?I looked away from him before he could ask. That was when I felt it. A gaze heavier than my ex's, hotter, fixed on the exact same spot. Not curious. Intense. The place where his eyes landed burned.Professor Aldrich was looking at my thigh. His expression hadn't changed. The same flat composure he wore in every combat class. But his eyes were on the handprint and they were not flat. They were dark and focused and they stayed longer than they should have.My heart was beating too fast. I pulled the hem of my dress down and crossed my legs and didn't look at him again.Aldrich's POVPink. That was the first thing. The skin around the mark was pink, flushed from the heat of the fire, and the bruises sat in the center.
