LOGINLila's POV
He meant my ex.
I understood. The professor wasn't holding me because he wanted to. He was holding me because half the school was staring and my ex was ten feet away with murder on his face. This closeness was a performance.
I swallowed. His fingers were firm at my waist. His chest was warm against mine. His heartbeat was steady and unhurried and mine was not.
Then he looked down at me, and something in his eyes shifted.
His pupils weren't brown anymore. They were red. Dark, deep red, the color of wine held up to firelight, and they were fixed on me with an intensity that had nothing to do with strategy. It was the way a wolf watched something it wanted to run down. Patient and focused and predatory.
My stomach dropped.
I felt a pull in my chest. Low and heavy. Something that wanted me closer to him. I wanted to lean into his throat and breathe him in. I wanted to press my face against his neck and stay there. My brain had not authorized any of this, and my legs locked up.
It reminded me of that night. The hotel room. The silk over my eyes, the hands holding my wrists behind my back, the voice that said stay and meant it. The man I'd never seen. The man who was not the professor, because the professor himself had told me the cufflinks were common.
But my body didn't care about cufflinks. My body was reacting to something older and deeper than evidence and I didn't have a name for it.
The dance wasn't over. I pulled away anyway.
"Excuse me," I said. "I need air."
I walked off the floor before he could respond.
Gemma found me at the refreshment table with both hands wrapped around a cocktail glass.
"Why are you here?" She pushed a strand of hair out of my face. "You should be dancing with the professor."
"I stepped on his foot."
"So? He's a big boy." She grinned. "He's not going to torture you in combat class and on the dance floor, is he? Although honestly, I wouldn't blame him—"
"Stop." My face was on fire. I tipped my head back and drank half the cocktail in one swallow because the alternative was thinking about the professor's hands on my waist and his mouth near my ear and what he might look like without the tailcoat and I could not — I absolutely could not — think about that. "I will sew your mouth shut."
She laughed and dragged me toward the far side of the clearing, where a circle of students sat on logs around a smaller fire. "Truth or Dare," she said. "Best part of the night. Come on."
I tried to resist. She was stronger.
The circle was nearly full. Students passed a beer bottle around the ring, spinning it to pick the next target. Gemma pulled me through the gap and I spotted the two empty spaces at the same time my stomach clenched.
One seat. Between the professor and my ex.
Brielle was across the circle. She saw me, smiled with her teeth, and waved me forward. "Sit down," she said brightly. "We've been waiting. Now we can start."
Gemma gave me a gentle shove. I sat.
Professor Aldrich was to my left. He wasn't looking at me. His posture was rigid, his jaw set, and the air around him felt ten degrees colder than anywhere else in the clearing. Angry or bored. Impossible to tell.
Derek was to my right. He didn't look at me either, but I could feel his fury radiating off him.
Round one. The bottle spun and landed on a boy near the front. His dare: hug the person you know least for ten seconds. He picked a girl across the circle, wrapped his arms around her, and everyone counted down.
Round two. A girl. Truth. "When was your first time?" she was asked, and she blushed and said, "Coming-of-age night," and the circle howled.
Round three.
The bottle pointed at me.
I chose truth. It felt safer than whatever dare they'd invent for the wolfless girl who'd just rejected the football captain.
A boy across the fire leaned forward. He'd been watching me since I sat down. His eyes dropped to my legs, to the hemline of my borrowed dress, and his mouth split into a grin.
"Hold on," he said. He whistled. "Aren't you supposed to be the good girl? What's that on your thigh?"
Every head turned.
The dress had ridden up when I sat. Just enough. The mark was still there. Faint now, days old, but visible in the firelight. A handprint. Five finger-shaped bruises on the inside of my right thigh, fading from purple to yellow at the edges.
My blood went cold.
The hotel room slammed back into me. Hands pulling my wrists behind my back. The sting of his palm. The sound it made. The way my body had arched into it instead of away.
"My boyfriend did it," I said.
It came out flat and fast because I couldn't think of anything else and the circle was staring and I needed them to stop looking at my thigh.
Derek went rigid beside me. I could feel his confusion. He had never touched me like that. He knew he hadn't. His eyes burned into the side of my face.
From my left, Professor Aldrich spoke. His voice was calm.
"When my dog doesn't listen," he said, "I make it kneel and spank it too."
The circle erupted. Laughter, gasps, a chorus of disbelief. The cold, untouchable combat professor owned a dog? He spanked it? He made it kneel?
"That's so cute," someone said.
"I can't picture it," someone else said. "The professor with a puppy."
He didn't smile. Didn't elaborate. Just leaned back on his hands and looked at the fire.
I was the only one who heard it differently. The phrasing. The cadence. Kneel. Spank. Words that belonged to the forum, the community, the conversations I'd been reading and writing for over a year.
My skin prickled.
It meant nothing. He was talking about a dog.
But my hands were shaking.
Lila's POVI said yes.My knees still ached from the hospital floor. The bruises on my elbows had turned yellow-green overnight, and when I lifted my arms to pull on a sweater, the scrapes stung. None of that stopped me.The rational part of my brain screamed at me the entire time I was getting ready. This was reckless. This was a stranger from the internet with a reputation for being merciless. But I was a writer. A writer who'd only ever imagined submission had a ceiling. If I wanted to write it real, I needed to feel it.I put on the purple mask. The dom had said not to bring anything. No lingerie. No props. Just myself, on time. I pulled on jeans and a sweater and my worn canvas sneakers, looking exactly like what I was: a literature student heading somewhere she couldn't explain. The address was a villa on the hill above the academy. Wrought-iron gate. Gravel drive. Stone and glass perched on the ridge, larger than my entire dormitory. No lights on inside. The front door was unlo
Lila's POVI bit the hand holding my jaw.My teeth sank in hard enough to taste copper. The man howled and jerked backward, and in the second his grip loosened, I spat. Most of the liquid that had been forced past my lips hit the gravel. Some of it was already burning down my throat.I ran.My legs were shaking. My lungs screamed. I sprinted down the dark path with no destination except away — away from the amber eyes and the vial and the hands that wanted to mark me. Branches slashed my arms. My foot caught a root and I stumbled, caught myself, kept running."Get her!"Footsteps behind me. Fast. Wolf-fast.I opened my mouth to scream for help, but the cloth they'd stuffed in had scraped my throat raw. All that came out was a strangled rasp. The darkness was total. The dormitory lights were a distant glow. Then something massive hit the man closest to me.Not something. A wolf. Enormous, coal-black, broad through the shoulders, moving with a speed that made the air crack. The wolf cau
Derek went to the police station with his chin up and his voice carrying."My father will have me out in ten minutes," he told the officers. "You're wasting your time."I gave my statement in a side room with a female officer who took notes without expression. Yes, he'd grabbed me. Yes, there were witnesses. No, I didn't want to press additional charges — the bonfire harassment complaint was enough. When I stepped outside, a single text from Professor Aldrich waited on my screen. You're not expelled. Don't give me a reason to reconsider. It took me a moment to realize he was joking. Or as close to joking as he got.Thank you, I typed back. I hope I didn't cause you trouble. You can repay me by not failing the midterm.I pocketed the phone. Something warm and stupid spread through my chest. At the station, Derek was not having the quick exit he'd promised.I heard the details over the next few days, secondhand and third-hand, passed down from the football team to the campus security gu
Lila's POVThe café went quiet.Derek crossed the floor in three strides. Students at nearby tables looked up from their laptops. A girl in the corner lowered her coffee cup.He didn't stop until I could smell the grass and sweat on his jersey. His jaw was clenched so tight the muscles in his neck stood out."So this is what you've been doing." His voice was low and ugly. "I thought you were busy training. Turns out you've been baking cakes for your professor."He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the table. My chair scraped against the floor."Let go of me.""When did you start this?" His fingers dug into my bicep. He steered me toward the hallway, away from the staring crowd. "Was it before or after you dumped me? How long have you been sneaking around behind my back like a —""Don't finish that sentence."He finished it anyway. The word hit me like a slap.I looked at him. Really looked. The boy I'd loved for three years, brought coffee to every morning, skipped exams for. The
Lila's POVGemma was scrubbing mascara off my cheekbone with a damp cotton pad when my phone buzzed."Hold still." She tilted my chin toward the lamp. "You smeared everything when you bolted from the dance floor."I hadn't bolted. I'd walked. Briskly. With intention. She didn't need to know that the professor's eyes had bled crimson during the waltz, or that the pull at the base of my spine had been so violent I'd nearly tripped over a speaker cable. I could still feel his hand on my waist, the warmth of his palm seeping through borrowed silk. Some things were better locked away.My phone buzzed.I picked it up. A direct message from the forum app. A username I would have recognized from across a crowded screen. The dom.The same dom every submissive on the platform had bookmarked. The one who never reached out first.Same arrangement.Same hotel, 619.My pulse spiked. Thousands of women would have killed for this message. The most elusive dom on the platform, the man who never contact
Lila's POVDerek was staring at my thigh. Not at me. At the mark. His eyebrows were drawn together and his nostrils were flared. He had never left that mark. He had never touched me hard enough to leave anything at all. In three years, he had barely touched me. So who had?I looked away from him before he could ask. That was when I felt it. A gaze heavier than my ex's, hotter, fixed on the exact same spot. Not curious. Intense. The place where his eyes landed burned.Professor Aldrich was looking at my thigh. His expression hadn't changed. The same flat composure he wore in every combat class. But his eyes were on the handprint and they were not flat. They were dark and focused and they stayed longer than they should have.My heart was beating too fast. I pulled the hem of my dress down and crossed my legs and didn't look at him again.Aldrich's POVPink. That was the first thing. The skin around the mark was pink, flushed from the heat of the fire, and the bruises sat in the center.
