Chapter 2

Author: Ocean Cloud
“Fine, I get it. It’s not a big deal. I won’t use your card again,” Poppy said, her face dripping with annoyance.

Her attitude was so bad that I wanted to call her out on it.

However, Poppy was quick to cut me off. “Honestly, men around my dad’s age sure nag a lot.”

While talking, she started to touch up her makeup right in front of my face.

Her tone was utterly dismissive and annoyed.

“Poppy, I should point out that this is a professional workplace, not your home, so fix your attitude. Secondly, you’re right. I’m not your father. I have no obligation to spoil you.

“So here’s what’s going to happen. You will return the supplementary credit card to me.” I extended my arm.

Startled, Poppy smeared her lipstick past her lip line. She grimaced. “Jeez, Mr. Milton. You’re the worst. Look what you made me do! What are you going to do to compensate me?”

She flipped the switch, acting all pouty.

I said solemnly, “Hand over the credit card.”

“You’re seriously being so petty. The card isn’t on me right now. Can’t I just give it back to you later?”

Turning on her heel, she walked out. “Stop nagging me. I’ve never seen anyone so stingy.”

Even when she muttered under her breath, I caught every word she said.

Watching her receding figure, I could feel my blood pressure shooting through the roof.

This was what I got for being a nice guy.

Without hesitation, I dialed my private wealth manager, Chase, at the bank. Chase’s voice came through. “Mr. Milton, how may I assist you?”

“Freeze the supplementary credit card linked to my account.

“Do it right now,” I said.

Chase replied, “Yes, sir.”

With that out of the way, I called for an important meeting.

After the meeting wrapped up, Brandon, the VP, pulled me aside. “A word in private, Kai?”

“What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

Brandon dragged me to his office.

“Just see for yourself.”

He handed his phone to me, open to a thread on our company’s employee message board.

An anonymous user dropped a bombshell post that was going viral among the staff.

The title read, “Seeking advice: My boss is harassing me into a relationship. What do I do?”

The post essentially read that she was a recent college graduate working as an executive assistant. Her boss had been trying every trick in the book to pressure her into sleeping with him. She needed the money, but she refused to compromise her integrity for a paycheck.

The comment section was flooded with replies.

“Are you kidding me? Who is the creep?”

“Give us his name! We’ll stand up for you!”

“Yeah, right…”

The responses were all anonymous.

As my expression turned grim, Brandon said, “Kai, doesn’t this sound a lot like you?”

Granted, several managers and C-suite executives had their own EAs.

However, I was the only one who hired a fresh graduate.

The implication was crystal clear.

Needless to say, the odds were high that Poppy was behind the post.

“I’ll get IT to scrub the thread immediately.”

“Just leave it. Run an audit to confirm who made the post.”

While saying this, I took a screenshot of the post.

Brandon glanced at me in confusion before responding, “Sure.”

Clarence was never one to stay out of the spotlight. There was no way he would have kept his sponsorship a secret from the public. The fact that he buried the program proved there was something dark and sinister going on. I wasn’t convinced that Clarence was just a saint, doing his bit for charity without putting his name out there. “I’m not the only one. There are more girls in my situation,” Sylvia said. The presiding judge instructed law enforcement to open a full inquiry into the allegations. Poppy was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to repay all the money she defrauded from my supplementary credit card. Clarence, on the other hand, was held in custody, pending investigation. The Hugh Group collapsed into insolvency, its assets liquidated. With Clarence sitting behind bars, the consumers had nowhere to turn for refunds. Before long, the police had evidence of Clarence running a prostitution ring and federal drug distribution, exposing a massive network o

As soon as the words left Poppy’s lips, the room fell silent. Clarence was the only one whose face turned pale. “Who is this person in question?” The judge’s grave voice echoed through the court. Poppy pointed at Clarence sitting in the gallery. “That’s him.” “You’re lying!” Clarence jumped from his seat. “Do you have proof?” The judge asked. “Yes. I have a witness as well.” Poppy glanced at me before gesturing for her mother to retrieve the laptop. “The evidence is stored in my computer.” After the court technician loaded the files, the photos and videos flashed onto the gallery projector screen.Clarence appeared throughout the recorded footage and photographs. “These photos and videos are fabricated. That’s not me!” Clarence denied the allegations desperately. However, the court’s forensic expert quickly verified the files were authentic and unmanipulated. “You snake! You two have been working together all this time!” Clarence’s face twisted with rage. P

Sitting on the sofa with a cup of coffee in hand, I browsed through the online comments.Though most of the replies ripped Clarence apart, a handful came to his defense. One particular comment caught my eye. “Clarence is actually a decent guy. He funds higher education for underprivileged girls. If they struggle to find work after graduation, he offers them jobs. I’m actually one of the girls he had funded.” Less than half an hour after it went live, the thread below it was already blowing up.“Girls, huh? Is he discriminating against boys?” “Are you in college, or are you working for him now?” The original poster didn’t respond thereafter. Reading between the lines, I spotted a major red flag. I notified Brandon to get in touch with the original poster right away. Then, I gave Clarence a call. “Mr. Hugh, still feel like laughing now?” Clarence hissed through clenched teeth, “You did this!” “Do you honestly think Poppy would play nice and leak our product formula

Instead of involving law enforcement, I ended the meeting and gave the mole a chance to find me. Near the end of the workday, someone finally came knocking at my office door.“Come in.” I kept my eyes on the door. When Raymond stepped into my office, a massive weight lifted from my chest. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Milton. I sold the IP to Poppy, but I had no choice… I had my back against the wall…” His face carried an agonized expression. Leaning into my seat, I kept a straight face. “Here is your chance to come clean.” “Poppy’s dating Clarence Hugh of the Hugh Group. She set me up, got me dead drunk, and took compromising pictures of us in bed just to get her hands on the formula.” Raymond scowled. “She blackmailed me, threatening to send these photos to my wife unless I gave her what she wanted. Given my wife’s weak heart, I panicked and gave in. “Rest assured that I never handed the real proprietary blend.” I was surprised. “Oh?” “I’ve been with this company for years. I

I released all the evidence online. With that, I managed to clear my name, and the corporate standing bounced back. Here I thought the nightmare had come to an end. Just as I let out a sigh of relief, another crisis hit. Somehow, the formula for our new product had fallen into the hands of our competitor. They launched their version ahead of us, stealing our thunder and causing us irreparable loss. Tension and anxiety hung heavily in the air as we sat in the conference room. The R&D team took the hit the hardest. They were in line for a huge bonus payout following a successful product launch. It was bad enough that their bonuses were out the window, but now, the business was facing potential bankruptcy. “Besides the core R&D group, only high-level management had access to the IP.” Brandon broke the silence. Not having it, the R&D team questioned, “Sir, what’s that supposed to mean? Are you saying that we leaked the formula?“We sacrificed our sleep and worked ourse

I got in touch with Poppy and asked her to come to the office. Thinking I was ready to cave in, Poppy happily showed up. Back in the office, Poppy looked at me delighted. “Mr. Milton, if you had come to your senses earlier, we wouldn’t even be in this mess.” She approached me and threw her arms around my neck, setting her rear down on my lap. I pushed her away and said with a stoic face, “Your parents put you through school just for you to act like a cheap flirt in front of men?” Poppy went white, but a smirk quickly crept across her face. “I thought you were ready to play ball. Looks like you called me in for something else. “Out with it. What do you want?” I cut to the chase. “If you clear my name now, I’ll consider letting this go.” “Who are you kidding?” Oblivious to the gravity of the situation, Poppy remained aggressive. “If you had anything on me, you wouldn’t be negotiating with me in a private room. Since you want to do this the hard way, get ready to watch you
