"Good," he said, settling back in his seat as he took a turn toward the quieter side of town. "Because I’ve got a reputation to keep up, and I play better when my boyfriend’s around."

I couldn’t help but snort, trying my best not to blush. He shot me that boyish grin of his, the one that always made my stomach do a little flip.

"You’re such a sap." I said.

He chuckled in response and I glanced out the window again, but a smile started to creep across my face despite myself.

  • My Enemy [BL]   One Thirty Three

My heart squeezed in this painful, aching way I wasn’t prepared for. Frank had a weird family situation, but hearing it out loud... hearing how calmly he said it, like it was normal for parents to abandon their kids just to sip wine in Paris or backpack through Asia... it made something twist inside me.I thought of my mom. I thought of all the ways she had failed me too, but at least she was there. Messy, distracted, and painfully unreliable, but still physically present. The thought of a thirteen-year-old Frank packing a tiny bag and wandering into the woods because he felt so unwanted... it made my stomach knot. No kid deserved that kind of loneliness. It was just so bizarre to me... how parents could decide to hop on a plane and disappear for years like it was some extended honeymoon. I understood wanting freedom, wanting to travel, wanting to explore the world everyone did, but doing that at the cost of leaving behind a child? Frank’s childhood? And one as soft-hearted as he was?

We pulled apart just a bit, enough to catch our breath, but not enough to lose the warmth buzzing between us. Frank’s hands were still firmly at my waist, his thumbs drawing small, absent-minded circles on my sweater, almost as if he wasn’t even aware he was doing it. Maybe it was the sunset, the twinkling fairy lights, or the way he looked at me, but I leaned in before I could second-guess myself.I cupped his face, stood on my toes, and kissed him again slowly, surely, and a little breathless. His embrace tightened around my waist, like he was afraid I might slip away, and the faint scent of his cologne...warm and familiar—wrapped around me like an extra hug. When I pulled back, my heart raced, and his smile was bright enough to make my knees weak."Well," he said, brushing a thumb across my cheek, "I think I should do this kind of thing more often... if this is the reward."I laughed, nudging his shoulder with mine, trying and failing to hide how flustered I felt. "Don’t get cocky

I opened my eyes, and my breath hitched.Everything inside me went totally still as I took in the sight before me.We were at the edge of a cliff I didn’t even know existed, looking out over Willow Haven. The city below was bathed in this warm, golden glow, the sun just starting to sink behind the skyline. From up here, all the noise and chaos of life seemed so tiny and peaceful, almost like someone had painted it just for us.A cool, gentle breeze brushed against my cheeks, carrying the faint scent of pine mixed with something sweet—maybe berries. My breath caught again as my gaze drifted downward.Right in front of us was a big picnic blanket woven with soft, muted colors, deep green, cream, and warm brown. It was set up with a small feast that made my heart squeeze with delight:A wicker basket overflowing with fresh pastries, glazed croissants, crisp at the edges, little jars of strawberry and peach jam, two tall thermoses...one marked hot cocoa, the other tea, a container of cut

It eased the tightness in my chest, if only for a moment.Even though my life felt like a tangled mess getting worse by the day, Frank still felt like my one safe haven where I could actually breathe. It took us about thirty minutes to drive until the familiar rows of houses began to thin out, and the scenery transitioned into something much quieter, greener, and far more dramatic.By the time Frank tu

I shifted my textbooks to the other arm, trying to project confidence that I didn’t really feel. Tori’s words were still ringing in my ears, and before I could think twice, the decision spilled out."Okay... I’m going."Both Millie and Tori froze, like I had just announced I was off to Antarctica to marry a penguin.Millie’s face went pale."Atlas, no. Absolutely not. Seriously, this gives me a bad feeling, like, stomach-ache bad, you know?"Tori sighed with an air of drama. "Millie, hun, your stomach acts up when you drink milk.""That was one time!" Millie hissed as she grabbed my wrist, panic written all over her face. "Atlas, listen. Just...let me do a reading tonight first before you decide. One reading. I’ll even use my moonlit deck. If it says danger, you’re not going."I almost laughed...partly at how serious she was, and partly because honestly, if she pulled out her cards right here in the hallway, I wouldn’t even bat an eye."I appreciate it," I said softly, squeezing her h

I was still trying to shake off everything those freshmen had just said when Millie came charging down the hallway like a tiny, furious, pink storm cloud."Atlas!" she wailed dramatically, waving a sheet of paper over her head. "Look at this injustice—LOOK AT IT!"Before I could even get a word out, she slapped the paper against my chest. A giant C- glared back at me, almost as if it was personally offended by her existence.I winced. "Oof... that’s rough.""Rough?" she echoed, gasping like I’d delivered a deadly blow. "This is a hate crime! Mrs. WilAlexs has it out for me. I swear, she sniffs my essays and just gives me failing grades out of spite! And I poured my heart and soul into this paper. Maybe it’s because I’m black! Maybe–"I had to stifle a laugh; she was being so ridiculously dramatic that I couldn’t keep a straight face. She huffed, crossing her arms and glaring at her paper as if it had betrayed her. Then her eyes fell on the flyer still in my hand. Her whole face froze.

I leaned against the seat. So much for going unnoticed, in my dreams.Millie blinked, then turned to the source of her voice. "Oh no," she whispered. "It’s her."I gave a phony grin as Ainsley and her group approached our table. "Ainsley," I said in a monotone voice."Surprise to see the two of you

When I woke up the next morning, for a moment I couldn’t recall where I was. The ceiling wasn’t the same familiar one I’d looked at for years back home; it was brighter, the curtains looked fancy, and a light hint of lavender lingered in the air. That’s when it hit me—I was at the Harrigan mansion.

The morning sun felt warm on my skin as I stepped outside, and the Harrigan mansion’s driveway looked like it belonged in a magazine. Right there, leaning against her lilac car like she owned the place, was Millie Peterson. You couldn’t miss her—those soft curls bouncing around her face, oversized

Ainsley. Her bright red hair was hard to miss, even from a distance, cascading over his arm as she leaned in to kiss him. I guess that meant they were officially dating after months of her chasing him.Rowan didn’t even glance my way—not a flicker of concern, not a single look to see if I was okay.
