The neon sign of the bar blinked a tired, red light through the dirty window. Inside, the place smelled like old beer, stale smoke, and bad decisions. I did not care. I just wanted a drink.
My head pounded from staring at a computer screen for ten hours straight. Being a graphic designer sounded easy to people, but when a client changes their mind about a logo five times in one day, your brain feels like mush. I needed to get out of my small apartment. I needed noise that was not my own thoughts.
I sat down on a sticky barstool and ordered a cold beer. The bartender shoved a glass toward me without looking at my face. I took a big sip and let out a long breath. My life was supposed to be quiet.
My mom always told me to keep my head down, do my art, and stay away from trouble. Especially the kind of trouble attached to my last name ever since my dad died. I did not know much about what happened to him, only that he got mixed up with bad people and paid the price.
I wanted no part of that world. I just wanted to draw pictures and live a normal life.
"Is this seat taken?" a deep voice asked.
I looked up. A man was standing beside me. Even in the dim, yellow light of the bar, he looked dangerous. He wore a heavy black leather jacket that hugged his broad shoulders, and dark hair fell messily across his forehead.
His face was sharp, with strong lines and dark eyes that seemed to look right through me. He looked like the kind of guy people crossed the street to avoid.
"No," I said, my voice sounding a little too breathy. I cleared my throat. "It's all yours."
He slid onto the stool next to me. He ordered a whiskey, neat, and paid without making a sound.
I tried to look back at my beer bottle, but I could feel him watching me. His presence was huge, taking up all the space around us. It made my skin tingle in a weird, nervous way.
"You look like you had a bad day," he said. His voice was low, like a rumble of thunder before a storm.
I let out a short, dry laugh. "That obvious, huh?"
"Yeah," he said, a tiny smile touching the corner of his lips. It made his tough face look completely different, softening him up just enough to make my heart do a funny little flip.
"Rough day at the office?"
"Something like that," I replied, turning slightly to face him. "Clients who don't know what they want. Computers freezing up. The usual boring stuff."
"Boring is good," he said softly. "Boring keeps you alive."
I paused, looking closely at his dark eyes. There was something heavy behind them, a secret life I knew nothing about. "You don't look like a guy who likes boring things."
"I'm not," he said simply. He held out a large, warm hand. "I'm Kade."
"Milo," I said, taking his hand. His skin was rough, calloused from hard work or fighting, but his grip was firm and steady. When our skin touched, a jolt of electricity shot straight up my arm. I pulled my hand back quickly, hoping he did not notice how much it affected me.
We started talking.
At first, it was just easy back-and-forth jokes about the crazy people in the bar. But as the minutes ticked by, the air between us started to feel thick and heavy.
Kade did not talk much about himself. Every time I asked him a personal question, he would smoothly change the subject or give a half-smile that made me forget what I was even asking. But he listened to me. Really listened.
When I talked about my art, he did not look bored. He looked at me like I was the only person in the crowded, noisy room.
"You have very expressive eyes, Milo," Kade said suddenly, leaning in closer. His shoulder brushed against mine, and a shiver ran down my spine. "They show everything you're feeling."
"Is that a good thing?" I asked, my mouth suddenly feeling dry.
"It's dangerous," he whispered, his eyes dropping down to my lips for a single, agonizing second before meeting my gaze again. "Especially when you look at me like that.
"Like what?" I breathed.
"Like you want me to kiss you.”
My heart pounded so hard I was sure he could hear it over the loud music playing from the jukebox. I knew I should walk away. I knew nothing good could come from getting involved with a mysterious biker I met in a dive bar.
But the way he looked at me made all my smart thoughts melt away. I did not want to be safe right then. I wanted to feel something real.
"Who says I don't?" I whispered.
Kade didn't wait. He reached out, his warm hand cupping the back of my neck, and pulled me in. When his lips met mine, the whole world just stopped. It wasn't a gentle kiss; it was hungry, demanding, and full of a wild, burning heat that made my head spin.
I let out a soft gasp, and he used that moment to deepen the kiss, his tongue brushing against mine. My hands flew up, grabbing the heavy leather of his jacket, pulling him as close as I possibly could.
Around us, people shouted and laughed, clinking glasses and bumping into our stools, but none of it mattered. There was only Kade, the smell of leather and rain on him, and the way his hands felt burning hot against my skin.
When we finally broke apart for air, my chest was heaving and my lips were tingling. Kade rested his forehead against mine, his breathing just as heavy as mine.
"Upstairs," he said, it wasn't a question. It was an order, and I was entirely ready to obey.
The rest of the night blurred into a rush of heat and shadows. The room above the bar was small and quiet, lit only by the pale orange light from the street lamps outside leaking through the dirty blinds.
There, stripped of our clothes and our defenses, Kade was entirely different from the tough biker downstairs. In the dark, touching him, he was surprisingly gentle. His large hands traced the lines of my body with a kind of reverence that made my chest ache.
Every touch was slow, deliberate, and filled with a quiet intensity that felt much deeper than just a random hookup. I lost track of time, getting lost in the warmth of his skin, the weight of his body pressing me into the mattress, and the way he whispered my name like it was something precious.
I felt safe with him, wrapped in his arms, even though I knew nothing about him at all.
When the morning sun finally crept through the window, painting thin yellow stripes across the floor, I woke up feeling warm and happy. I rolled over, expecting to find the heavy weight of Kade's arm wrapped around my waist, ready to pull me back in.
The bed was empty.
I sat up fast, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. "Kade?" I called out, my voice sounding small and foolish in the quiet room.
No answer.
I threw off the covers and stood up, wrapping a sheet around myself. The room was totally silent. Kade's clothes were gone, and my boots were sitting neatly by the door.
The only thing left behind in the rumpled, empty bed was a heavy black motorcycle jacket draped over the back of a wooden chair.
I walked over slowly and touched the cold leather.
A strange, heavy sinking feeling hit my stomach. He was gone. Just like that, the man who had made my skin burn and my heart race all night had vanished into thin air, leaving me with nothing except a memory I knew, deep down, I was never going to forget.
Kade’s PovThe folded note and the photograph burning a hole in my hand told me everything I needed to know: someone was playing a very sick, very dangerous game, and they were getting way too close.I looked down at Milo. His face was pale, his wide brown eyes staring at the creepy picture of himself with absolute terror. He was shaking, wrapping his arms around his chest like he was freezing cold. Seeing him like that made something dark and protective flare up deep inside my chest. I wanted to hunt down whoever took that photo and make them regret the day they learned how to hold a camera."Get away from the door, Milo," I said, my voice dropping into a harsh, commanding tone."They were right here," Milo whispered, his voice trembling as he backed slowly into the living room. "How did they get up here without us hearing them? This building has a locked front door!""Professionals," I muttered, slamming the apartment door shut and throwing every single deadbolt and lock into place
Milo’s PovThe air in the kitchen still felt hot and electric long after Kade pulled his heavy body off the floor. My heart was pounding heavily, not just because someone had been watching us through binoculars, but because of how it felt to have Kade pressed against me. Even when he was trying to save my life, his hands had been firm, warm, and entirely too gentle for a tough biker gang vice president. He stood up, walking over to the window to check the empty street one last time before pulling the blinds shut. His jaw was clenched tight, and the muscles in his back strained against his black t-shirt.I pushed myself up from the floor, brushing off my sweatpants, my patience officially running out. I was done being treated like a helpless child, and I was completely done pretending that the man standing in my kitchen was a total stranger."You can stop acting like a robot now," I said, my voice sharp in the quiet room.Kade turned around slowly, his dark eyes narrowing slightly.
Kade’s PovThe hardest part of any job is staying focused when your mind is screaming at you to do something completely stupid.Standing in the middle of Milo Hayes’s small, bright living room, I stared at the back of his head and cursed myself for being an idiot. I should have known better. When Adrian called the club asking for protection, I volunteered because I wanted to make sure the job was done right. I did not expect the target to be the same sweet-eyed graphic designer who had completely wrecked my common sense in a smoky bar the night before. The second I walked through that front door and saw him standing there in his loose sweatpants and oversized t-shirt, my heart had hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I recognized every single thing about him: the way his dark curls fell messily over his forehead, the way his shoulders tensed when he got mad, and the exact shade of brown in his eyes that made me want to forget every rule I lived by.But I couldn't. As the vi
Milo’s PovThe sound of heavy pounding on my front door felt like a hammer hitting my aching head. I groaned, wrapped a blanket tightly around my shoulders, and dragged my feet across the wooden floor. After the strange, sleepless night I had, my mind was already a tangled mess. I pulled the door open, ready to yell at whoever was disturbing my peace, but the words died in my throat. It was my older brother, Adrian. He looked pale, stressed, and completely frantic. Before I could even say hello, he shoved past me and walked right into my living room, looking around nervously as if a ghost was hiding behind my sofa."Adrian, what on earth are you doing here?" I asked, rubbing my tired eyes. "It's barely eight in the morning.""Milo, shut the door and lock it," Adrian snapped, his voice sharp and shaking. He turned to face me, his hands gripping his dark jacket. "Someone has been watching this apartment. For days, Milo. You are not safe here."I let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Wa
