Chapter 2

Autor: Glass Cloud
That year, we turned down every high-paying job offer and chose entry-level positions at the Department of Occupational Safety instead. We wanted to make a real difference.

Brody dropped to one knee in our cramped apartment. But what he offered wasn't a diamond ring.

It was a ring he'd crafted himself from a scrap piece of industrial-grade alloy, polished smooth by his own hands.

"Lara, wait for me. One day, I'll replace this with a real one."

Tears welled in my eyes. I couldn't speak, so I kissed him instead and slipped that heavy ring onto my finger.

"To me, this is more real than any diamond," I said.

The memory tasted sweet, while reality cut like a knife. I swallowed the bitter ache and turned to look at Brody. His eyes flickered with something unreadable.

Ellie bit her lip and sighed, brows furrowing as though she truly pitied me. "If Lara hadn't gone down the wrong path back then, she'd probably have a bright future now. What a shame…"

She didn't need to finish. Brody had clearly followed the thought to what came after. His expression darkened instantly.

He lifted Ellie's hand to his lips and kissed it gently. "She was always calculating, always chasing profit. She could never compare to you.

"If only I'd met you first..."

While they whispered to each other, my memory flickered again.

"Lara Quinn, you're being dismissed."

That day should have been my 25th birthday.

The screen lit up. I stood with my head bowed as someone slapped me hard across the face.

"You'd better get your act together!" The department's loudspeaker began broadcasting my termination notice on a loop.

"Following an investigation, Ms. Lara Quinn, while serving as a safety technician, was found to have accepted corporate bribes and falsified critical safety data, resulting in severe safety hazards.

"Effective immediately, Lara Quinn is dismissed and permanently barred from re-employment."

The familiar faces of my colleagues looked at me differently now.

"No wonder she's been wearing designer clothes lately. It turns out she was taking dirty money!"

"Poor Brody. He's about to marry someone with a criminal record!"

I kept my head down and gritted my teeth as I walked home. My eyes stung with tears, but I didn't say a word in my own defense.

When I got home, Brody didn't ask a single question. He acted like nothing had happened and cooked an entire spread to comfort me.

"Lara, it's okay. We can still make a difference outside the department."

I stared at the ribs on the table without lifting my gaze. Then I reached out and flipped the entire table over.

"Can making a difference pay the bills? Brody Pierce, I'm done with this endless poverty!"

His face went white as a sheet. "Don't do this…"

I stood up and cut him off without mercy. "I'm not doing anything! I'm telling you the truth!"

I pulled the ring he'd made for me off my finger and hurled it to the floor. "Wearing this thing makes me feel dirty!"

The sharp clatter echoed through the silent apartment. I stepped on the ring and ground it beneath my heel.

The metal scraped and shrieked. Brody's eyes turned bloodshot.

"Lara!"

I ignored him and kept going, my voice dripping with mockery.

"Let me tell you something. Mr. Wilcox from Apex Industries has already given me a large sum of money. That's worth a hell of a lot more than your pathetic dreams!"

I watched the color drain completely from his face. Then I smiled coldly, turned around, and slammed the door behind me.

The memory paused. The screen went dark, and the crowd in front of it erupted.

"That woman is pure evil! She threw away her conscience for money!"

"Mr. Pierce almost had his entire life ruined by someone like her!"

Brody's hands trembled as he opened the metal box. Inside lay the ring he'd made for me all those years ago, the same one I'd stepped on and said made my hand feel dirty just by wearing it.But now, on the inside of the band, there was a line of text so tiny it was almost invisible, carved with a needle point. Brody's hands shook so badly that it took him a long time to finally make out the words."I love Brody Pierce. Always have. Always will."I'd carved it myself during those countless days and nights undercover, one painstaking stroke at a time, carrying the weight of my deepest longing."She never hated the ring. She hated herself," Mr. Warner said with a sigh."She was afraid of tainting your dreams and your love. She pushed you away in the most extreme way possible because she wanted you to remember the worst of her and forget the best. That way, after she died, you wouldn't suffer as much."Brody couldn't hold on anymore. He clutched the cold ring tightly in his palm, pre

But the next second, Ellie was surrounded by the furious crowd and slammed to the ground by police officers who rushed forward.Even so, she kept screaming desperate excuses. "Memories can be faked! She's framing me! You have no proof! None!"Her twisted face looked especially vicious under the flashing police lights."Who says we have no proof?" An elderly but powerful voice rang out. Mr. Warner, the retired department chief, walked onto the judgment platform accompanied by two guards. He pulled a sealed document from his briefcase and raised it high. "This is Lara Quinn's backup plan. After you betrayed her, she left an identical copy of the evidence in a safe house."If it weren't for this soul trial, we never would have found it!"Justice always caught up in the end. Ellie's last shred of hope was shattered.Brody walked over, his face expressionless. He took a pair of cold handcuffs from an officer and locked them around Ellie's wrists himself with a sharp click. His voi

In that instant, I understood. I'd been betrayed.I hung up fast and was about to call the police myself when I caught sight of the countdown timer. There were only ten minutes left. The chemical plant was in a remote area. Ten minutes wasn't nearly enough time for the police to get here. That meant I only had one option left.As I watched the countdown race backward, I hesitated for just a heartbeat before charging toward the factory's central control room. Before those bastards could detonate the plant remotely, I still had a chance to manually shut down the reactor's main valve and minimize the damage from this biochemical disaster that could wipe out half the city.Wind roared past me as I ran toward the factory's core, heedless of everything else. The wounds on my body that had never healed tore open again from the violent movement, and blood streamed down.Inside the control room, alarms shrieked. I threw every ounce of strength I had into turning the massive valve on the b

Brody staggered back several steps, a sharp pain tearing through his chest. He'd hated me and cursed me for ten years. He'd even tortured my soul day and night after my death. But it had all been a misunderstanding."No… That's impossible…" he muttered.Ellie's face went deathly pale beside him. Her body began trembling violently, beyond her control. She grabbed Brody's arm in a death grip, as though clutching a lifeline."Brody, these memories have to be fake! If Lara was really undercover, why would she blow up the factory and kill all those people?"But this time, Brody couldn't spare her a glance. He stared at the screen, his lips trembling uncontrollably. The final memory continued. The night before the explosion, I used Gerard's connections to get my hands on every detail of Apex Industries' plan.To destroy all evidence of corruption and pollution, they intended to detonate several waste tanks and stage a perfect "accidental disaster". I didn't hesitate for a second. I we

Brody felt his heart plummet at the words. However, the decrypted footage wouldn't stop for anyone. The screen lit up again. This time it wasn't a filthy basement, but a solemn, dignified office. A white-haired man with sharp eyes sat behind the desk. It was the old department chief who'd personally recruited Brody into the Department of Occupational Safety years ago, now long retired. In the footage, I stood at attention, my gaze steady, filled with the kind of resolve that came from knowing there was no turning back."Sir, I'll complete the mission. You have my word."It turned out the scandal that had rocked the entire city, my public dismissal, had all been an elaborate ruse. I'd asked the old chief, Elliot Warner, myself to push me into the abyss so I could infiltrate the enemy from within.I never imagined these most degrading memories would be exposed like this in front of everyone. Panic flooded through me. I threw myself uselessly in front of Brody."Brody, don't wat

The comments froze for a moment, then erupted into a heated discussion."Why is she still living in a basement? Could there be more to this story?""What more could there be? Everyone saw her sleeping around!""She's probably planning to use that dirty money to bribe her way up the ladder. I've seen plenty of women like her.""Look at all those envelopes. She must have a lot of clients!""Oh my God… How many terrible things did Lara do?" Ellie turned her face away as though she couldn't bear to watch anymore. She wiped at her tears in silence.Brody pulled her into his arms, about to comfort her. But suddenly, a face appeared on the giant screen. It was Ellie."Ellie!"The moment she appeared in the footage, I jumped up and hurriedly gathered all the envelopes from the table. Then I pulled a USB drive from the drawer and handed it to her, my expression grave."Ellie, this has all the original evidence of their falsified pollution data, plus the ledgers showing bribes to senio
