On the fortieth floor of Williams Tower, Margaret Collins walked out of the lift with her head high.

She wore a cream suit and her best diamond earrings. Her makeup was perfect. Nobody on that floor would have guessed that three nights ago she had cried in a hallway and begged a stranger for her life.

Hannah had called her the next morning. Her voice was soft as silk.

My dear girl. A terrible misunderstanding. Mr. Pascal worked for someone else. You and I are family. Come home.

Margaret was not

“To the future,” said Gideon, and lifted his glass. It was Friday night, and the restaurant at the top of the Meridian Tower glittered with candles. They sat at a corner table by the window, with the whole city spread out below like a field of fallen stars. Sarah wore a black dress and her mother’s pearls. Gideon wore a smile he had not worn in years.Across the table sat a slim woman in a gray suit, with short dark hair and a quiet, intelligent face. She lifted her own glass with a little smile.“To the future,” said Elaine Park.Sarah drank. She watched Elaine over the rim.The woman was perfectly calm. She spoke easily about quarterly numbers and the Summit. She laughed at Gideon’s jokes. She had worked for Aurevia for eight months, and in that time she had never once been late, or wrong, or rude. Sarah could not find a flaw. That was the trouble. If you wanted to hide a spy, she thought, you would hire exactly this. All week she had been testing her. She had left a false report on

For a long moment, Frederick did not move.He stood behind the counter with a wooden paddle in one hand, and the warmth of the oven at his back, and looked at the man who had burned down his life. His heart was going very fast and very slowly at the same time.“You should not be here,” he said.“A free country, I believe.” Voss walked along the counter, trailing one gloved finger over the glass. “I have always admired a good bakery. So honest. So direct. Flour, water, salt, heat. Nothing hidden.” He paused at a tray of rolls. “May I?”“They are not ready.”“Then I shall wait.”He sat down at a little wooden table by the window, as calmly as if he had been invited. He took off his gloves one at a time and laid them side by side.“I will be brief. You are a busy man.”“I have nothing to say to you.”“Then you may listen.” Voss folded his hands. “I have a proposal. It is very simple. In three weeks, a court will decide whether an old piece of paper is real. The Moore agreement. Your fath

Mrs. Greene’s bakery stood at the bottom of Dyer Street, a narrow old building with a blue door and a crooked sign. It smelled of yeast and butter and warm stone. At three in the morning, when the rest of the city was asleep, a single yellow window glowed in its wall like a lit candle.“That is not bread,” said Mrs. Greene, looking at the loaf on the table. “That is a brick.”She was a small, round, floury woman of sixty, with Big Joe’s heavy brows and none of his patience. She had given Frederick an apron on the first day, and a long wooden paddle, and an order to stand where she put him. She had asked him no questions at all.“I followed the recipe,” said Frederick.“You followed the words. Bread is not words.” She slapped a lump of dough on the board in front of him. “Put your hands in it. No, not like that. You are not strangling it. You are talking to it.”He put his hands in. His ribs ached. His healing palms stung against the flour. But under his fingers, the dough was warm and

The safe house was a gray apartment on the sixth floor of a building with no name on the door.Sarah climbed the stairs herself, in her plainest coat, with a hat pulled low. A tired young policewoman let her in and nodded toward the end of the hall.Margaret sat at a small table by the window with a cup of tea she had not touched. She wore a gray cardigan. Her hair was pinned back. She looked ten years older and strangely younger, like a child who has been awake too long.“Thank you for coming,” she said.“You said it was important.”“It is.” Margaret turned the cup in her fingers. “I have been here for two weeks. Reyes has been kind. He has not asked me to say anything I do not want to say. I think he is waiting for me to make up my mind.”Sarah took the other chair. “And have you?”“I think so.” She drew a breath. “I want to tell you what I know about Voss. All of it. Not for you. For myself.”She began slowly, and then faster. She talked for an hour. She described phone calls she h

By Monday, the whole country knew.AUREVIA’S SARAH MOORE AND GIDEON HALE: THE POWER COUPLE IS OFFICIAL.Someone had taken a photograph from the hospital car park. It showed a tall man and a woman in a green coat, standing close together on a rooftop at sunset, in the middle of a kiss. It was blurred and golden. It looked like a film poster.Sarah did not read the articles. She did not need to. Her phone buzzed all morning with congratulations, and she answered them all in the same warm, clear, perfect voice. She laughed at the right places. She smiled at the cameras. Gideon held her hand through every interview, and he looked, for the first time in a year, entirely at peace.“We are partners in all things,” he told a reporter, with a grin. “It took us long enough.”She was happy. She told herself so every morning, in the bathroom mirror, as she brushed her hair.On the fourth day, a nurse at the valley hospital found a bed empty and a note on the pillow.Thank you for everything. I am

The hospital had a small garden on its roof.It was a bare, windy place with a few potted trees, a plain stone bench, and a low wall with a view over the valley. The sun was going down. The hills turned gold and then rose, and the first lights came on in the little town below.Gideon stood at the wall with his hands in his pockets. He did not look at her when she came out.“I have been a patient man,” he said. “I think I have been a very patient one.”“Yes.”“I waited when you slapped him. I waited at the lake. I waited in the hospital when you cried for him. I told myself that a woman who has been hurt that badly needs time.” His voice was quiet and even. “And today I stood on a factory floor and watched you run across a hundred feet of concrete, and I thought, I have never once seen you run like that for me.”“Gideon—”“I am not angry. I want you to hear that. I am not angry at you, and I am not angry at him.” He turned at last. His eyes were very tired and very kind. “I am only ask

“I can’t believe what you just did, Gideon,” Sarah said slowly, her voice low but trembling with a mix of shock and something far more dangerous, something darker, as her eyes followed the direction Frederick and Margaret had just disappeared through, their figures fading beyond the glass doors li

“Good morning, Frederick… I’ve always loved you.”The voice was soft. Familiar. Last night after Frederick sent Sarah out from his house, he sank into the leather chair by the window. The house was quiet.Too quiet.Margaret and his mother, Hannah, had left hours ago…right after Sarah walked out with her suitcases. A few hours later, Sarah stood in front of the house she once called home. The tall iron gates loomed before her like a final judgment, their cold metallic bars glinting under the afternoon sun. The sight alone sent a sharp ache through her chest. Her legs felt unbearably heavy, as though each step
