WINTER:

My heart was hammering against my chest as I sauntered towards the dining area. The smell of rose flowers wafted across the air. But it did not help me at all to calm my nerves.

Ynes, our house helper was already at the dining area and gaped at me as she scanned my looks. It had been a long time since she saw me doll myself.

In the previous months, I looked like nothing but a walking zombie.

"You look gorgeous, Miss Winter," she whispered.

"Thank you," I whispered and my gaze wafted through Calcifer who was eyeing me too.  I shifted my weight from foot to foot. "Do you like my dress, Calcifer?" I asked nervously even though I didn't have any reason to.

If there was someone who should be nervous, it should be him because he was asking for a divorce.

He blinked a couple of times as if he was mesmerized.

"Y-Yes, pumpkin," he muttered under his breath. And as if reminded by something, he got on his feet and offered his arms. Anchoring myself on him, we both sauntered to the table. "I loved seeing you like this. It reminded me of the old days."

Back when we both tried to make this marriage work. Back to the time when he was also hopeful that love would blossom between us or was it only me being romantic?

It would also be better if he loved me, not only my dress.

"How do you like my preparations?" I  asked.

He smelled so manly. He was warm, contrary to what I was feeling inside. Cold and nervous.

I clenched my fist.

Relax, Winter.

Ynes watched us with admiration. The woman knew the real score between Calcifer and me, but she did not say anything about it. She was the type who would never say anything against her bosses and that was something I admired about her even if she did not sign a confidentiality agreement. I could keep any secrets to her.

"Lovely, pumpkin," he whispered, but his voice was no longer happy. It felt like someone died from his family.  "I was not expecting any of this."

His happiness did not reach his eyes.

He was no longer happy.

I need to let him go. For good.

The mere fact that he never remembered our second anniversary was already telling something about us.

All I did was put him into misery and for someone who loved Calcifer, I did not want him to suffer. I want him to spread his wings and be with someone whom he really loves, even if it hurts me so much.

I was to blame.

"Thank you," I said.

Pulling one chair opposite to him, he offered it to me, but I shook my head and requested, "Can I sit beside you?"

"Why?"

"I always sit opposite to you. This time, I want to sit next to you." For one last time.

"If that's what you wish. But I cannot see your lovely face."

Much better so that you could not see the sadness in my eyes.

"That's fine."

"If that's what you wish." He pulled the chair next to me and I sat.

"I hope everything is to your liking. I prefer it, especially for you. Everything is your favorite."

The food was all delicious. There was no doubt about that, but I could not stomach eating them. Not that I was waiting for good news.

I wonder when he will drop the bomb?

"What's the occasion again? This is so hasty?" Calcifer muttered and hid his nervousness through his laugh.

I looked down at my hands. "You forgot."

We also need to celebrate your freedom away from me. From our family. You've been unhappy because of that. Leaving the woman whom you loved. Her name was Carmela, right? She was your ultimate love and the two of you broke up when father asked you to marry me.

I saw her call Calcifer one evening. Secretly. And seeing I was already asleep, he got out of bed and answered the call with no idea what the two had talked about.

"What did I forget?"

I smiled sadly.

"Nothing special," I answered. If he had forgotten about it, then there was no way that I would remind him.

Removing the cork from the bottle, I poured wine on his  glass.

"You can leave us for once, Ynes. I will call you when I need you," I ordered.

Ynes bowed and left silently leaving Calcifer and me in the dining area. I did not want an audience while Calcifer shoved the divorce paper in me.

I did not want anyone to witness my pathetic side.

"Thank you, pumpkin."

I put the wine next to me, but returning the favor, he poured wine into my glass.

Calcifer started eating with gusto. Based on my observation, he liked all the foods I prepared for him.

Sensing I was only watching him, he asked, "You're not eating anything?"

"I am full. Seeing you eat already makes my stomach full."

Calcifer laughed. "This is so unlike you, pumpkin. You're usually—" he trailed off and looked at me. Then back to his food. "My apologies."

"Staying in my room? Yes. I did that. What else have you observed in me these past few months?" I finished his words.

He was silent for a moment, before he mumbled, "N-Nothing else. I became busy after."

"Busy for what?"

For taking care of the divorce? When did the copy finally arrive in your hand? Above all, how could you do this to me, Calcifer?  I wanted to ask them myself, but cowardice got ahead of me.

The only mistake that I made was to get drowned by my own fear and sadness and refusing to see the world, but now that I was on my feet again, you will have to leave me? How unfair could you be?

"Company. Our company is back to its full potential. I also met a lot of investors to invest in the company. The company that we owned is stable now."

The Petersons were known for their real-estate company named Redshark and based on what I had known so far, they were one of the best known companies in the country. Plus the agents at Redshark agents receive a salary rather than working a hundred percent commission which was beneficial to the people who buy and sell at Redshark.

"That's good. I'm happy for you."

Maybe that was why he never needed me. He could stand on his own now that their company was back at the top. He was now tossing me away.

Calcifer scooped some carrots on his plate and put the spoon in my mouth. He knew carrots were one of my favorites. And without being forced to, I opened my mouth and ate what was offered to me.

Calcifer was one of the best men I could ever ask for a husband. He always took care of me. When I was beside him, he did not make me feel that he was only using me for his own benefits. When I was around him, I felt like a real woman worthy to be loved and invested.

But I was wrong. He was only doing this for his benefit.  Because if he was not, then he would never leave me.

My eyes simmered and I had to look away. Calcifer will know that I already had an idea what he would say. The envelope was there in the vacant seat.

Marriage certificate my foot. Why was he prolonging my agony? Why could he not say it directly that he wanted to divorce me?

"You're not eating anything, pumpkin. You're getting skinnier than ever. That's not good for you." At least his concerns were genuine.

"Seeing you makes me full," I answered. "I am fine."

He looked at me with a stern expression. The same expression I saw from Father.

"Pumpkin. You should take care of yourself. What if—"

"Why don't you do it for me? You're my husband. I won't get sick if you're always with me."

He groaned. "I cannot do that. I won't always be around."

My heart clenched. This was it, right? He was going to tell me that he would be leaving me soon and that I had to live my life to the fullest.

"Why? Are you leaving me now, Calcifer? Are you leaving for good?"

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    150: END

WINTER: One week later… Just like what I wanted, it was a small wedding only, attended by some important people. The wedding only happened in the mansion, something Calcifer did not approve of, but agreed to in the end. Did he have a choice? He did not. In the end, he had no choice but to give in. My wedding dress was nothing fancy. It was a simple one which I bought at the mall. Cali wanted to hire someone to make the dress for me, but I declined. I didn't want anything extravagant. It was better to donate the money to some charities. After all, what was more important was the marriage. Our marriage life after the wedding. We only invited the pastor to come into the mansion. The press found out about our wedding. It was all over the news, but I told Cali not to give any statement about it. I will do it when I want. Despite the venue, Cali was still able to ask the wedding planner to transform the hall into something beautiful, with a lot of flowers on each side. The servan

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    139: Hawk

HAWK: The door burst open and saw Miss Nathalia’s angry look. I stopped drinking and looked at the newcomer. The alcohol did not even make me drunk. I need more. “Miss Nathalia. Cheers.” I offered a bottle of beer, but her expression told me she was not a bit happy. “Is this all your plans, right now, sulking in the corner? Smoke. Drink?” Nathalia asked. She put her hands on both of her lips as she looked at me with disappointment. Almost a week of staying in this apartment which she had helped me get. In the meantime. I was supposed to start working on her, to be her bodyguard, but I did not have the strength to work at the moment. It still hurts.Miss Winter was my ultimate love and there was no other woman beside her.The alcohol made me numb the pain, but when I got sober, it was back again. When will this end? "I am only giving you this week to fix yourself. If you will not, I will kick your butt and let someone drag you to my condo and stay there."She had been pestering

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    138: Proposal

WINTER: The crowd was expecting my answer while all I could do was stare at Cali kneeling down, holding an opened box where the ring was waiting for me. “I know this is not the kind of proposal that you’re expecting. This is simple, but I thought that you also did not like anything fancy. This is not like what you see on social media platforms, but there is one thing that I wanted to assure you. My feelings are real. My promises will remain the same. It's the feelings that matter, right?”Cali was expecting my answer, and the more I was silent, the more he grew nervous. My eyes went to Dad. He was already wiping the tears from his eyes while Nathalia was silently cheering for his brother. The servants seemed like they could no longer breathe because of the fast beating of their hearts. “Cali…I…” I bit the inside of my cheeks. Was I ready now? “May I talk to you for a moment?”His mouth fell but was able to get hold of his emotions. Clearing his throat, he said, “Yes, Pumpkin. Wh

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    137: Pumpkin, Will You...

WINTER: ONE MONTH LATER...“Mommy? Why is Uncle Hawk leaving us?” Liam asked, watching Hawk bringing his bag outside. Not only Liam and I were sending him, but Calcifer was also with us and the rest of the maids. None of us wanted him to go. “He is just visiting his parents, Liam. He does not know when he will be back, that's why he resigned.”He looked at me with pure innocence. “Daddy? I don't understand why he needs to leave us while he visits his parents,” Liam continued. Cali patted Liam. “You will understand when you become an adult.”He pouted. “I don't want to become an adult, Daddy. I want to be your baby forever.”“You will be our baby forever.”A month had passed since I accepted Cali's love. A month of always showing me how much I meant to him and our son. He never failed to show us how much he loved us, by cooking and traveling abroad. Above all, Liam was the happiest. He constantly brags to his classmates that his Daddy is already with us and he constantly wants Ca

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    136: Dream

WINTER:I rubbed my hands together as I waited for Hawk. Craning my neck, I stared at the gate, waiting for a car to enter— the car I let Hawk lend.My heart continued to hammer against my ribcage. Damn it. Why was he making me this worried? Was he punishing me? It was already six o’clock and he was not here yet. I wonder what happened to him. He was not this late. He also never was the type who never texted me where he was right now.I bit my fingernails while pacing back and forth on our porch. That man. I will give him a scolding for making me worry this much. This was so unlike him. Did he want me to die because of worrying?Cut him some slack, Winter. That man is hurting after you told him the truth. Do you think it is easy for him?But he went out to have some check right? It was nothing to do with me and Cali?I stopped and checked my phone again for the nth time. Still, no messages coming from him. Damn it. What seemed to be wrong? What if I call his number? Why haven't I

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    135: Room 703

HAWK:Nathalia was pretty easy to talk with. The moment I asked for her pin code, she gave it to me without hesitation. Was she always like this to other men? [Don’t be shy to order something online, Sweetie.][Are you there, yet? Your silence is making me nervous.][Hawk! You have to answer me, or I will call the police and declare you missing.]I shook my head while reading the last message.Answer her. She does not joke when it comes to you. Again, left with no choice, I texted some replies and hit the word send.[Yes? Yes? Is that the only thing you could answer me, Sweetie? I’m putting all my efforts into giving you a reply and you’re going to answer short ones? You are seriously hurting my feelings.]I pocketed my phone after telling her that I was going to enter her condo. She was not the one who I was expecting to text. It was Miss Winter. But I did not receive anything from her.I stopped at Room 703 after double-checking it. This was the room Nathalia had given me.I was a

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    134: Hawk

HAWK:I stared at the ceiling like a fool. Now what? Where would you go now? Why did you lie to Miss Winter saying you’re sick? Now, you’re forced to go out and spend the rest of your day there. Now, you’re forced to go out and spend the rest of your day outside while your guilt is eating you away. You never lied to Miss Winter like this. I smiled bitterly. Could I be blamed? When I heard Liam and that bastard’s laughter, I gave in to the temptation and I went to the pool and saw them myself. The bonding of the real father and Dad. Something which I will never be able to achieve. My chest felt like it was being wrung. I held my breath as the pain became too much seeing how they looked good together. The three of them. Liam was happy. Miss Winter was happy with the bastard’s presence in the mansion. When he failed to sleep in this room, something might happen between them.I closed my eyes tightly as images of them being together entered my mind. Something already happened betwee

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    133: Swimming Pool (Part 2)

WINTER:Hawk's silence was not helping at all. “Hawk? I'm waiting.”"May I use this day as my day off? That's the reason why I approached you.”“Day off? Where would you go? You did not usually use your day off, right?”“I'm not feeling well right now. It started last night."Worry flashed over me and touched his forehead. “You don't have any fever at all.” But sometimes, you felt hot inside your body but on the surface, it was not hot. "Do you want me to call our family doctor to check on you?""No, Miss Winter. I already called someone. A friend of mine. I will visit his clinic so that he will know the diagnosis."“Don't you think it's better to stop smoking? It's not good for you.”“I will think about it, Miss Winter. It's not easy to quit.”“If there's a way, there is a will. Do you have a friend who is also a doctor? No offense, Hawk. But I don't see you hanging out with anyone.""I met him on social media.""Oh, I see. Is that person to be trusted? Hawk. Please be careful. Ther

  • My Ex-Husband's Temptation    132: Swimming Pool

WINTER: I was dreaming. You know the feeling that you were aware that you were inside your dream? That's what I'm feeling right now despite facing Cali in a fine dining restaurant. He wore a suit while I was wearing a red dress. He looked so handsome.“Why are we here?” I asked. “You don't remember, Pumpkin?”“What?”“We are celebrating because we are having our second child. So don't drink any alcoholic drinks from now on.My eyes bulged. “I'm with a child?”He chuckled and grabbed the wine glass from my hand. “This is supposed to be mine.” He emptied the contents. “We're going to have a baby?” I asked.“We are. I'm so happy, Pumpkin.”I looked down and saw that there was indeed a baby bump. Tears simmered down my eyes when I felt the kick of my baby inside. “We are going to have a baby?” I whispered while caressing the bulge on my stomach. “Thank you for approving to have another baby,” he whispered and kissed my hand. “Calcifer!” a woman's voice suddenly shouted.
