Chapter 2

last update Last Updated: 2025-11-19 18:31:27

I woke up brewed my tea and went straight to planning my day. I was meeting the REINE company today and haven’t even thought of how it was going to go.

“Sam, what is on my schedule for the day?”

“First, you are closing the deal with the Whiteneys by nine o’clock, by twelve o’clock you have a meeting with the shareholders of Ali Ltd and lastly by two pm, you have a meeting with REINE company.” He read without making any mistakes.

“After that, what next?”

“Nothing else ma” he replied.

“Did you look into the accomplishments of REINE?” I asked carefully.

“Yes ma” Good.” I was about walking out when I thought of something. I definitely don’t want to be at that meeting. Trust me, it will be eventful, but I planned to make my revenge very slow, well planned, and smooth. Isaac Friedmann said “the sweetest revenge is done slowly.” So, yes, slow is the plan. “Do you have anything doing today?” I asked, turning slightly, my head on the air, and my ponytail hanging a few inches below my shoulders. I looked like an actress from the 80s. I have wanted to be an actress, but today, I am a businesswoman. My gorgeous look would make acting so easy for me, even getting roles for a movie. I looked so elegant when I smiled, but why would I? I have no reason to. I have lost everything that makes me happy on this earth. Barely hearing my ex’s name or seeing his photo boils another rage in me, but there’s nothing I can do for now. I wish I could go back, and I promise I would make sure I do not date that thing because he was definitely my worst mistake.

"I want you to represent me the meeting with REINE I said, without giving him a choice.

"But ma, it is your first meeting with them,"

"And?" I asked.

"I don't think it will be nice to be absent, I think you should be there in person."

I stared at him without saying a word. His truthful nature was one of the things that made me hire him.

Flashback*

I came down to the large, befitting hall to see my dad talking to a strange looking man. He was hairy and covered with beards. He wore small glasses on his eyes, a very big watch on his wrist, a tight fitting shirt that revealed the size of his big stomach, a tight trouser that made him looked funny and a big shoe making him look like a clown. I was trying so hard not to show the disgust on my face, but of course, I was betrayed. I went down to my dad, gave him a peck on the cheek after greeting him, and turned to greet the man. I was walking out when my dad called me back.

"Alina"

"Yes, dad." I replied, respectively.

"What do you think of him?" He asked, pointing at the man. I looked at him with that look of "Wait...what? like excuse me?".

"About what, dad?"

"As your assistant, of course." I coughed out immediately. My what? That can't be true. I know my dad is not into fashion or knows anything about fashion because if he does, he wouldn't be wearing dark blue vest with a white face cap, but still why would he think the fat man, probably not fat but chubby man will be of any help to me. I couldn't tell him to leave since it would look disrespectful, and I also couldn't afford to hire him.

"Uhm...dad I don't need an assistant for now,"

"Darling, you do. You have a lot of work right now, and you need someone to help share your burden, " He said calmly.

"I understand dad, but I'm currently ending a launch program three months from now, maybe after that I'd accept an assistant " I said using the term accept, so he wouldn't think I'm avoiding him.

"Okay, my dear, that's fine," He said. I bent down to peck him and finally walked off happily. I was over joyed. I can't have such a man walking with me wherever I go.

I got to the office and took off my shoes as I settled to start work. I heard some noise outside the office. I stood up to look through my window when I saw a fallen motor bike and a man angrily saying some things I couldn't hear due to my distance. I was confused. What was going on there?. I went down to find out when I saw the young man saying something like, "I know, but you would have done it in a better way. You didn't have to use violence."

"What is going on here?" I asked loudly. They all stopped talking at the instance and bowed their heads, obviously except the young man.

"I asked a question." The man started, "I came to do a delivery here. This young woman ordered a pizza," he said, pointing to my receptionist.

"Okay?" I said, signalling him to continue.

"When I got here, I drove in. I wasn't stopped by the man at the gate. He even opened the gate for me to drive in. But immediately I got here, this young man started shouting at me, " he said, addressing the security man. Well, it was just a rule. No one was allowed to drive into the main office.

"I didn't know I wasn't supposed to."

"Okay?" I said

"Then the young man started pushing me roughly out of the compound while I was still on the bike. I fell with the bike. He could have just told me that without touching me." He said angrily.

"Were you hurt?" I asked

"No, ma, I wasn't," he replied honestly.

"Did you tell him the man at the gate let you in?"

"Yes, ma, I did."

"What did he say?"

"He said that that was none of his business." I turned to my workers.

"Was everything he said true?" angrily but still calm.

"Yes, ma," they replied. I looked at them sternly as if I was expecting anyone to say another word.

I turned to the security. "Then why were you rude to him?"

"I'm sorry, ma, but I didn't want to lose my job."

"Well, you just did,"

"Ah, ma. No ma please, I was protecting my job ma"

"Well, as this young man said, you could have done it in a way that would please both sides. You didn't have to resort to violence, but you chose to. And you, " I said, turning to face the man at the gate who was already kneeling on the ground crying "Maaa" he said with a shaky voice. "You knew we don't drive in here, and yet, you opened the gate for someone to drive in. He doesn't know the rules. He was just doing his job, but your job was to tell him what to do since you are the one who works here, but no. You let him drive in. Why?" Ma, please, I'm sorry, pardon me. I promise I won't do it again. " He pleaded over and over again. "Well, too bad for you, I'm not in a good mood today. So, go in there, pack your things, and leave." "Ma please" they pleaded continuously. "I don't want to repeat myself." With that, they left. I turned to face the already calm young man, who had stood quietly aside as I addressed the matter after raising his fallen bike. "I'm really sorry about that. Please, I plead on their behalf."

"Well, but unfortunately, your pleas won't get me back my job."

"What do you mean by that?" He then showed me a text on his phone. " I felt really bad and then thought of something. "What if I give another job, like a better paying job would that make you happy?" I asked. Immediately, his face lit up

"Yes, ma, I'll be so grateful."

"You sound like a graduate. How far did you go in your studies?"

"I went as far as graduating from the university, ma," He said honestly.

"Bring me your cv, and come for an interview tomorrow. You will be applying for the position of my personal assistant." I said as I began walking out. He continued thanking me even when I was out of sight. That was how Sam became my assistant, and trust me, he is the best there is. He is very consistent, hard working, and accurate. He is also very truthful. He was someone Zack would tell me to stay away from.

After I lost my dad, Sam had been like a shoulder for me to lean on. I was really lucky to have him.

Back to present

"Well, I don't care about what you think, I have my own reasons, and I want it to be done the way I want it." Yes, ma," he said, head bowed. "You tell them you are my brother. So you're representing me as my brother who also has a right in the company. Is that understood?"

"Yes, ma," he replied again. "Good".

I got into the car, and we zoomed off to start my day. I really don't know what to do about Zack, but I felt I was making the right decision.

"Sam, have you found Dr. Rashford yet?" I asked."No, Ma'am. I've not been able to find him.""And why is that? You know I need to know what happened to my father." I said angrily, but I wasn't. It was part of the plan. The plan was to mislead them."I'm sorry ma, I'm still trying to find him,""Try harder, Sam. I need to see him." I ordered before getting down the car.In my office at Zeine Ltd., I dropped my bag carefully on the desk and exhaled slowly. Phase one was complete. Phase two required precision, timing, and distraction.I turned toward the mirror mounted beside the filing cabinet and adjusted my clothes with deliberate care. I loosened the top button of my shirt just enough, letting the soft curve of my chest rise into view—not desperate, not obvious, just… persuasive. My skirt, tailored to perfection, parted at the side as I moved, the long splits revealing the hot lengths of leg with every calculated step.Satisfied, I picked up a folder, an excuse, a prop, and smiled a

I slipped to the ground as I cried again and again, whispering that I was tired... tired of everything, tired of the confusion, tired of the fear crawling under my skin. I didn’t know what to do anymore. But the voice kept coming. That voice. It pressed against the inside of my skull like a warning bell, ringing, echoing, repeating the same name.It sounded so familiar, so close, like a voice I heard every single day without realizing it. How was I not able to place it? Why did it feel like it lived inside my memory already?I wiped my face with shaky fingers and immediately dialled Kyle.“What’s up with Dr. Ashford?” I asked, trying to stop my voice from cracking.“I’ve chained him to the room like you instructed, ma’am. He can’t go anywhere. Whenever you’re ready.”“Good.” I exhaled. “Kyle, I want you to look into the guy Mila was with the other day at the store.”“Which guy, ma’am?”“There was this guy she was with in the store today... this morning. I want you to look into him. I

I was so tired, my body aching, and I was famished. I told Kyke to drive me home before taking Dr. Ashford to the uncompleted building. I needed to freshen up and eat. Stress weighed me down like a heavy chain, and I could feel it in every part of me...my shoulders tight, my eyes almost rolling back from exhaustion.I finally got home and stepped into the shower. The warm water should have been relaxing, but my mind refused to let go. "I was… I was done. Done with everything." I said to myself as tears streamed down my eyes. I looked up as if expecting someone to drop from the ceiling. I was trying so hard to stop myself from bawling out, but it was of no use. I held my hand over my mouth to resist myself from making sounds. I was tired of everything already. I can't find what happened to my dad, I can't find the doctor, and I don't even know who was planning all these. My hands trembled slightly as I dried off. Just as I walked in my closet, my phone rang. It was Mila.I ignored i

I drove speedily to the hospital, my hands trembling on the steering wheel. I had no idea what I was going to do, but one thing was certain—I had to get that man out of there. Kyle had already tried to kidnap him, but that plan was falling apart. So now, I had no choice but to handle it myself. I picked up my phone"Kyle, how's it going?"“Ma’am, I’m still not able to enter the hospital,” Kyle whispered on the phone.“Why? Just pretend you’re any other visitor or something."“Ma'am, I have a plan, but there are security cameras everywhere. I can’t even access the main hallway without being caught."“Then find the technical room. Turn off the cameras. You can do that.”“But, I can’t do this alone.”I exhaled sharply. “You know what? I’m coming there right now. Stay where you are."“Okay ma.”I sped into the hospital parking lot and stepped out of the car. Kyle appeared from behind a tree, his face tense.“Kyle, what's going on?”“Ma'am, I found the location of the technical room—the o

I got back to the office, and the first thing I saw was Zack seated in the chair. He wasn’t relaxed—he was pacing, standing, sitting, then standing again as if something important had gone missing. The moment he heard the door, he looked up sharply. I froze for a second, watching him. His eyes kept scanning the room, restless, worried, but he hadn’t touched a single thing. I finally walked in fully. “I got the shirt,” I said softly. He exhaled—almost dramatically. “Where have you been all this while?” he asked, frustration lacing his voice. “I’ve been waiting for you.”“I’m so sorry,” I lied smoothly. “Something happened at the store, and I needed to fix it.”“Okay… sure.” He sighed, then looked at me again. “Where’s the shirt? And I hope it’s nice.”“Oh, it is.” I said as I handed it to him.He held it up, staring at it for a moment, his expression softening.“Wow,” he said. “You really do know my taste. This is definitely what I love.”"Well, yes, I know your taste because you were

I carefully arranged the documents on my table. My table was a mess and needed a saviour. I looked at Zeine's contracts and almost laughed out loud when a call came through my phone. Kyle’s name flashed on the screen.I immediately grabbed the phone as I answered quickly. “Hello, Kyle. How’s it going?” I asked. His voice came through shaky. “Ma'am…I couldn’t get through to the doctor. He has refused to comply.”I sat up straight. “Kyle, what do you mean by that? I told you to make sure I see him today."“Ma'am, I’m sorry,” he said, and I could hear the frustration in his tone. “I’m not able to get to him. I really don’t know what’s going on.”“Kyle,” I whispered sharply, “you never fail a mission. Why exactly are you telling me this? I want to see him right now. I need to be sure he’s telling the truth. I need to be sure he’s not playing with me. I need answers to my questions." I said angrily. “I have this feeling,” I continued. “Someone is trying to jeopardize my mission. I want t
