Chapter 4

Author: Marrow Wan
"You really have no shame, Cecelia. Did you come all the way to the hospital to look for your ex-boyfriend?" a woman cut in, her voice dripping with mockery.

I looked up and saw Lucy Hayes.

Her makeup was flawless, and she was carrying a limited-edition handbag. She stood there elegantly with an arrogant look on her face.

When she walked over and stood next to Zachary, they looked like a perfect match. I, on the other hand, was dressed in a faded T-shirt and jeans, with no trace of makeup on my face.

Zachary frowned. "What are you doing here?"

"My dad asked me to pass something to Uncle Sam," Lucy replied, clinging to Zachary's arm affectionately. "I didn't expect to run into you and… Cecelia here."

She deliberately dragged out my name. The contempt in her eyes was impossible to miss.

Zachary, Lucy, and I had all gone to college together, and Lucy had looked down on me from the very beginning. She used to call me a country bumpkin who had nothing but a pretty face. She'd also accuse me of trying to marry into money by shamelessly clinging to Zachary.

I couldn't be bothered to interact with her. I felt suffocated, and I just wanted to get away from this place as soon as possible.

"I have other things to tend to, so I'm going to take my leave."

"Stop."

Zachary's voice rang out from behind me.

Still clinging to his arm, Lucy flashed me a taunting smile. "Didn't you run off with some rich guy back then, Cecelia? What happened? Did he dump you? Did you come back to leech off of Zach?"

The way she said Zachary's name made my heart sink.

I stopped in my tracks and turned around with a smile.

"That's right."

Looking straight at Zachary, I declared, "I got dumped, and I've used up all of my money. So, I decided to come back to see if Mr. Carter is still willing to let me play him for a fool."

  • My Ex Takes Me Home… to Fix His Appliances?   Chapter 15

By the time I walked out of the cafe holding that document, Zachary was waiting downstairs. He clearly knew about the meeting, and his handsome face was etched with worry. He hurried over and looked at me nervously. "Did my mother give you a hard time?"I shook my head and handed him the document. After reading it, shock and understanding flashed across his face before he flashed me a bitter yet relieved smile. He understood his mother better than I did, after all."This is the biggest compromise she could make," he said softly.I nodded. "Yeah."I looked at him and suddenly smiled, but tears still slipped down my cheeks. I stepped forward and pulled him into an embrace."Zachary." I buried my face against his warm chest, causing my voice to come out muffled. "There are no more secrets between us at last."His body trembled for a moment before he pulled me into an even tighter embrace."Yeah," he murmured next to my ear.Now that I was finally by his side again, his voice sh

In the quiet cafe, I came face-to-face once again with the woman who used to make me feel so unnerved.Elizabeth looked more exhausted than she did the last time we met, but she still maintained her elegance and poise."You don't need to be nervous," she said, her voice flat. She slowly pushed a document in front of me.I thought it would be another check, but when I opened it, I found the documents establishing an independent trust fund—with my name listed as the beneficiary. The amount in the fund was enough to ensure a worry-free life for my family and me for a lifetime.I looked at her in confusion, not understanding her motive."When Zach came home the other day, we had a huge fight. He was ready to give up everything for you. Then, I realized I was wrong. I'd thought you were the one ruining him. But as it turns out, the one who was ruining him was me," Elizabeth explained.A flicker of vulnerability appeared in her eyes."I'd spent my entire life paving the way for h

All of my disguises crumbled under Zachary's scrutiny. I opened my mouth to speak, but I couldn't make a sound. Before I could utter a single word, tears began to stream down my face.Seeing me cry, his gaze softened instantly and gave way to a trace of panic and helplessness. He raised his hand to wipe my tears away, but then stopped in midair."Don't cry," Zachary said gently. "Tell me, what exactly is going on?"At some point, David had followed me out. "It's leukemia," he answered for me.He stepped forward and handed a medical report to Zachary. "He's already been through a year of chemotherapy. Now, his only hope is a bone marrow transplant."Zachary took the report from him and turned the pages one by one. The entire corridor was silent except for the sound of rustling paper. My heart was a tangled mess as I watched him.He knew. He knew everything. When Zachary flipped to the treatment expense page from a year ago and saw the sender's name was Elizabeth Morris, eve

My heart ached with a mixture of emotions. As it turned out, I wasn't the only one who had been suffering this entire time. After tending to my wounds, Zachary got to his feet and put his usual cold expression back on."500,000 dollars. It'll be in your account by tomorrow. You can go now," he declared.Without sparing me another glance, he walked straight back into his bedroom. I, on the other hand, remained on the couch, staring at my bandaged knees. For the longest time, I couldn't bring myself to move.…The next morning, I received a bank notification confirming the transfer. 500,000 dollars. Not a cent more, not a cent less.I dragged my exhausted body out of his apartment and didn't look back. This time, I thought that things were truly over between us. But to my surprise, Zachary and I ended up crossing paths again under unexpected circumstances three days later.…David urgently called me to the hospital. He told me that Colin's condition had suddenly deteriorated a

I couldn't sleep a wink that night. I got up and looked for things to keep myself busy. I poured all of my pent-up emotions into fixing the appliances and electrical wiring around the house.I spent hours sprawled across the cold floor. Finally, at 1:00 am, the robot vacuum in the corner let out a soft beep. Subsequently, a recording of my voice filled the room."Cece's ready to get to work!"Feeling utterly exhausted, I slumped onto the floor. Zachary emerged from his room. Dark circles had formed beneath his eyes. He clearly hadn't slept either. His gaze fell on the robot vacuum in the corner before it shifted to me, who looked like a complete mess. With a complicated look on his face, he asked, "Did you fix it?""Yeah."I pushed myself up with my hands in an attempt to stand up. However, my legs had gone numb after kneeling for so long. In the end, I lost my balance and stumbled toward the floor. To my surprise, my body never hit the ground. Instead, I fell into a pair o

A chill ran down my spine, and I was overwhelmed by a crushing sense of helplessness. It felt as though all the struggles I had endured over the past year were nothing more than a pathetic charade in Elizabeth's eyes.By the time I returned to Zachary's apartment in a daze, Zachary wasn't at home. I locked myself in the guest room and stared blankly at the ceiling until it turned completely dark outside. All of a sudden, I heard the sound of a car honking outside. Zachary had returned.I heard him pour himself a glass of water, then his footsteps approaching my door. I held my breath. A few seconds later, his footsteps receded.I let out a breath of relief before a strange sense of disappointment hit me. Forcing myself out of bed, I walked into the living room to continue the work I had left unfinished the night before.Zachary was sitting on the couch with a laptop on his lap. His forehead was knitted together, and he appeared to be going through some documents. At the soun
