The car eventually came to a stop in front of my apartment building. Zachary didn't get out of the vehicle. Instead, he turned to look at me with an unreadable look in his eyes."Are you short on money? How much do you need?" he asked. He sounded as if I was some kind of charity case."I was, but I'm fine now," I replied.I held my head up high and reached for the door, but Zachary suddenly reached over to grab my wrist."Cecelia," he began, his voice laced with weariness. "How can you be so heartless?""We've already broken up, Zachary. My life is no longer any of your business."I yanked my hand away from him and ran upstairs without looking back. The moment I closed the door behind me, I could no longer hold myself together. I dashed into the bathroom and turned on the faucet. Then, I splashed cold water on my face over and over again, hoping it'd somehow bring me back into my senses. All of a sudden, my phone buzzed in my pocket. The hospital had sent me a payment remi

"You really have no shame, Cecelia. Did you come all the way to the hospital to look for your ex-boyfriend?" a woman cut in, her voice dripping with mockery.I looked up and saw Lucy Hayes. Her makeup was flawless, and she was carrying a limited-edition handbag. She stood there elegantly with an arrogant look on her face. When she walked over and stood next to Zachary, they looked like a perfect match. I, on the other hand, was dressed in a faded T-shirt and jeans, with no trace of makeup on my face.Zachary frowned. "What are you doing here?""My dad asked me to pass something to Uncle Sam," Lucy replied, clinging to Zachary's arm affectionately. "I didn't expect to run into you and… Cecelia here."She deliberately dragged out my name. The contempt in her eyes was impossible to miss. Zachary, Lucy, and I had all gone to college together, and Lucy had looked down on me from the very beginning. She used to call me a country bumpkin who had nothing but a pretty face. She'd also

I broke up with Zachary a year ago. A lot of time had passed since then, but I still remembered what happened as if everything had just taken place yesterday.Shortly after I sent Colin to the hospital, Zachary's mother, the elegant and refined Elizabeth Morris, came to see me. She didn't berate me or humiliate me. Instead, she calmly handed me a check and a document. The check was for a million dollars, and the document contained the information and contact details of several of the best hospitals in the area.I couldn't believe that the melodramatic plot I'd only ever seen in television shows was actually happening to me in real life. After handing me the items, she said, "Cecelia, I know you're a smart woman, so I'll get straight to the point. You're not good enough for Zachary. If you leave him, I'll give you this money to cover your brother's medical expenses."Her voice was calm and gentle as she continued, "Zachary has a bright future ahead of him. He's about to take on a

My heart skipped a beat. Was Zachary trying to use his money to humiliate me? Was he planning to do something else?I instinctively took a step back and found my back against the cold wall. To my surprise, Zachary didn't come any closer. Instead, he made his way toward the side of the room and pointed at the robot vacuum and the refrigerator."The electrical appliances aren't getting any power. Perhaps something is wrong with the wiring, but it hasn't been fixed yet," he explained.I was an electrician. One look at the wiring was all it took for me to spot the problem—especially since I had drawn the wiring diagram for this apartment myself.Back then, Zachary used to sit in my classes to keep me company. While the professor spoke at the front of the lecture hall, I'd draw wiring diagrams at my desk."Let's use this design for the wiring in our future home, Zachary," I told him.I had only sketched out that diagram on a whim, but he took the drawing from me anyway. I never expe

A chill ran down my spine, and I was overwhelmed by a crushing sense of helplessness. It felt as though all the struggles I had endured over the past year were nothing more than a pathetic charade in Elizabeth's eyes.By the time I returned to Zachary's apartment in a daze, Zachary wasn't at home. I locked myself in the guest room and stared blankly at the ceiling until it turned completely dark outside. All of a sudden, I heard the sound of a car honking outside. Zachary had returned.I heard him pour himself a glass of water, then his footsteps approaching my door. I held my breath. A few seconds later, his footsteps receded.I let out a breath of relief before a strange sense of disappointment hit me. Forcing myself out of bed, I walked into the living room to continue the work I had left unfinished the night before.Zachary was sitting on the couch with a laptop on his lap. His forehead was knitted together, and he appeared to be going through some documents. At the soun
