Chapter 2

Author: Chloya
The next morning, dark circles under my eyes, I brought Mira Bennett, the local medical liaison, back to the clinic.

Seeing me at the door, Ava's lip curled in displeasure. "Why are you here again?"

I didn't bother with her and walked straight inside. My patients were what mattered right now.

To my shock, there wasn't a single patient left in my clinic.

The smell of disinfectant had all but vanished, replaced by something richer and more complex.

Scented candles, warm milk, some kind of expensive wood furniture polish. It all hung thick in the air.

Four strangers occupied the emergency ward. A middle-aged couple didn't even look up when I walked in.

Judging by their features, they had to be Ava's parents.

The other two wore white coats and bustled around organizing luggage. They were clearly guards hired by Ava's family.

It wasn't just the emergency ward. The observation rooms and the on-call suite had all been converted into a private maternity wing.

Ava's still-dripping laundry was draped across the examination equipment I'd spent over three hundred thousand dollars on.

The medications and folding cots I'd prepared for neutral-status patients had been shoved into a storage closet.

Further down the hall, someone had even taped a sign to the on-call room door reading "Private Security Station."

My personal belongings were dumped in a careless pile. Muddy footprints stamped across patient files. My medical field kit had been repurposed as a coffee table, covered in coffee rings and grease stains.

I thought I'd lose my mind. "Who gave you permission to touch my clinic?! Where are my patients?"

Ava's mother, Carmen Castillo, was in the middle of draping the Castillo family crest over mine on the wall.

The shouting finally got her attention. "The patients have been sent away. My daughter is about to give birth. You expect her to share a ward with all sorts of strangers? What if something went wrong?

"I have to think about my daughter's safety."

As she spoke, she reached up and took down the plaque from my clinic wall, the one that read "Werewolf Council Neutral Clinic."

Panic shot through me as I thought of my patients.

Mira stepped forward. "Ma'am, this clinic's mandate covers cross-pack and unaffiliated werewolves. It can't be commandeered by a single family."

Ava's father, Marco Castillo, rose from his seat with an unhurried air and lifted the folder in his hand.

I snatched it from him. Inside was a purchase invoice for medical equipment and supplies.

The date was yesterday. The name on the order was Ronan's.

Something about this invoice looked off. It was different from the ones I usually filed.

Before I could think it through, Marco spoke up.

"Ronan is the Alpha of the North District. This clinic has always been his. From now on, we'll only be treating patients from packs we approve."

"What gives him the right to take over? This is my clinic!"

Marco smiled. "Little lady, have some self-respect. Carrying on like this over a man who doesn't want you? No man is going to like that.

"You say this clinic is yours, but Ronan's badge has a Council registration number on it."

He tilted his head, jerking his chin toward the stairway.

Ronan was coming down the stairs, and pinned to his chest was the Council-issued Cross-Pack Physician badge that belonged to me. The silver insignia gleamed in the sunlight.

He turned the badge over slightly, showing the registration number on the back to Marco, Carmen, and Mira. "The Council has transferred the clinic to me. I'm the one in charge here now."

I'd polished that badge more times than I could count. The number engraved on its back was MD-NA-0742, issued by the Council the year I graduated from medical school.

That was where my dream began. The thing I'd devoted my entire life to.

My fingertips went numb. I pointed at Ronan, my eyes burning red.

"Take it off. Now."

Three days later, Ronan, Ava, and her family were back at my clinic.Under the watch of Council inspectors and Officer Marsh, they packed up and moved out.The inspector checked off every item on the inventory.Ronan pulled two keycards from his pocket and placed them on the desk. The Castillo family's temporary access was simultaneously revoked in the system.Ronan had lost the VP promotion, his position at the company, and his identity sponsorship. The charges for occupation, identity fraud, and damages still hung over him. He'd gone gaunt, shuffling around like a walking corpse.Ava and Ronan had ended things between them. From the moment they walked in to the moment they left, neither said a single word to the other. By the looks of it, Ronan had no intention of acknowledging the child as his.A few days later, I got a message from an unfamiliar number. It was Ava.She wrote that she'd only done what she did because Ronan had deceived her. The last few lines said the baby was almos

The hearing convened the following day.At the long table, the Council presented every piece of evidence in chronological order: the five-day agreement, the access code tampering, the family moving in, the physician identity fraud, the coerced signature, the unauthorized sale of medical credentials, and the property damage. The Council chairman tapped the table. "Mr. Cortez, do you have anything to say?"Ronan licked his lips. "It was Ava who asked me to stay for the birth. She knew the clinic wasn't mine, and she still insisted on moving in. I was just..."Nora didn't even look up. She opened the surveillance footage on her tablet and pushed it forward. It was a screenshot from the second day of Ronan and Ava's stay. On screen, Ronan was changing the access code, not looking the least bit coerced.Ronan stammered, unable to form a single word. Then Ava raised her head. "I knew from the start that the clinic wasn't Ronan's. On the first day, I saw the plaque on the wall, and he told me

Nora surveyed the hall and raised her voice."The following violations have been confirmed at this scene. First, illegal entry and occupation of a Council neutral medical facility. Second, impersonation of the authorized physician and misuse of a Council-issued badge to conduct commercial negotiations with a third party under false credentials. Third, assault on the authorized holder, including physical shoving resulting in injury and forced contact with the wound site. Fourth, defrauding a marriage alliance partner of prenuptial funds, inflating medical equipment purchase prices, and misappropriating the difference. Fifth, unauthorized use of the Council's neutral medical credentials as a commercial bargaining chip in external negotiations. Sixth, damage to the authorized holder's personal field equipment and on-site medical property."Have I missed anything?"No one spoke."Then I am officially accepting Dr. Evelyn Grey's complaint against Ronan Cortez. We'll see you before the Counc

Ronan hadn't even sat down when the clinic door swung open again.A young man in a gray suit walked in, a diamond-shaped Greystone Pack Group pin on his tie clip.He scanned the room and zeroed in on Ronan."Mr. Cortez, right on schedule. You sent over the partnership framework by email. I've brought the advance payment agreement and a supplemental valuation brief. We sign today and we can get things moving."I understood immediately. This was Greystone Pack Group's investment manager, here to finalize the exclusive medical partnership with Ronan.Ronan shot to his feet, positioning himself to block everyone else from the visitor's line of sight."Mr. Gonzalez, right this way."He steered the man toward the back office."Hold on." Ava stepped forward. She had more questions than I did at this point. "You're the investment manager from Greystone?""I am."Gonzalez nodded, then turned to Ronan. "Is this the expectant patient at the clinic? You mentioned in your email that you had a high-

The first clip was from the day Ronan and Ava moved in.On screen, Ronan was entering the passcode. Ava poked her head into the hallway and spotted the plaque on the wall. "Werewolf Council Neutral Clinic.""This is a Council facility?""Yeah, part of the neutral network. Evelyn gave us five days of access. We'll stay for now and figure things out later."Ava nodded. The second clip cut to the on-call room. Ronan picked up the work tablet Evelyn had left on the desk, swiped through a few screens, and changed a series of settings."Don't worry. Evelyn's a hypocrite. She cares more about her reputation than anything else and would never risk it."Ronan pointed at Ava's belly. "You're pregnant. She won't dare go head-to-head with you. When the time comes, we just say she's harassing her ex-mate, bothering a woman who's about to give birth. A rejected wolf who can't let go."Ava asked something else. Ronan laughed and shook his head, then answered after a few seconds."That's her only weak

Ronan flinched, and I wrenched my hand free.A woman in a uniform stood in the center of the hall, radiating authority.A pair of gold scales was embroidered on her left shoulder, the emblem for legal counsel.I let out a long, shaking breath. Nora was finally here."Mr. Cortez." Nora's voice rang clear and sharp. "I'm Nora Vega, Evelyn's personal attorney."We've received reports that you are suspected of illegally occupying a Council medical facility, misappropriating a physician's credentials and Council-issued badge, and falsifying management authorization."I'm here to handle this matter."The corner of Ronan's mouth twitched. He pointed at me. "She's making it all up... I..."Nora flashed a shrewd smile and didn't let him finish. She directed the staff behind her to begin documenting the scene."Get Evelyn's injury on camera first, then the occupied rooms and the tampered access system."Oh, and this declaration too. Photograph it."Carmen stepped forward to argue, but Nora stopp
