LOGINThe flight back to New York was smoother than her departure had been five years ago, Liora thought.
“Over here, ma’am, I need to see your passport.” An officer said as they approached the exit door.
“Here,” Lily said, handing it over to him.
Ian and Liora carried one of the twins, as they had both dozed off before landing.
While waiting to sort their luggage, Adrian shifted uncomfortably in Ian’s hands.
"Are you up, big boy?” Ian whispered, putting him down.
The airport was packed full, with people travelling for the holidays. It was winter, and Christmas was a few weeks away.
"Potty," Adrian mumbled, still sleepy.
“I think he needs to use the restroom." Liora muttered.
“Okay, you guys should go; I’ll take him, and we will meet you outside.” Lily offered.
“Thank you.” Liora said, sighing in relief, wondering what she would have done without him and Lily.
Lily held onto Adrian’s hand as they walked through the crowd. Adrian rubbed his eyes with his left hand, now fully awake.
They walked a few meters away in the direction of the airport with the most crowd.
“Hold on tightly, okay?" Lily said as they navigated through the crowd.
Adrian nodded his head, more concerned with relieving himself than the crowd around.
Then suddenly a large group of college students wearing their sweatshirts rushed towards them. Their excitement was too strong for them to give heed to anything around them.
“Adrian!” Lily shouted as his hands slipped from hers.
Before she knew it, another group walked in, pushing them further apart. By the time Lily got to the other side, Adrian was nowhere to be found.
“Oh no, Liora is going to kill me.” Lily muttered under her breath.
At the other end of the airport, Adrian had a huge grin on his face as he stared into the face of the handsome stranger who carried him.
“Kid, you’re staring.” He says.
“Hmm, hmm, you’re handsome just like me,” Adrian responds with a grin.
The man’s brow went up in surprise at the kid's confidence as he asked, “Who told you so?”
“My mummy.” Adrian replied, still staring as he asked, “What's your name? Do you have a wife?”
The man turned slightly shocked eyes to the boy in his hand.
“So many questions. Well, no, I don’t have a wife, and my name is Travis.” The man mumbled.
“Okay. "I'm Adrian," Adrian responded, satisfied.
“Here we are. Go in and let me know when you’re done.” The man said as they got to the restroom.
“But my button,” Adrian pouted.
“for F*…” The man muttered, trailing off as he realized he shouldn’t say the F word in front of a kid.
“Okay, let’s go.” He agreed.
When he was done, Adrian walked over to the washhand, which was slightly above him.
“I need to watch my hand," Adrian said.
"Yes, of course.” The man muttered, shaking his head, his lips curling up at the side at the kids' cuteness.
Once done, they both stood in front of the mirror as if they were in sync. They raised their left hand and patted the back of their neck.
Instantly the man’s phone rang, and he turned to the kid. "Wait here; I’ll get someone to help locate your family."
“Okay,” Adrian nodded, still patting his neck.
After about five minutes, Adrian walked out the door right into the arms of a screaming Liora.
“Oh my god! Adrian!” Liora shouted.
Adrian extended his lower lip, pouting as he almost teared up.
Passersby cast a glance their way at the scream, wondering what was going on.
“I’m sorry, Mummy." Adrian said, folding his small hand in front of him.
Ian and Lily stood behind them, holding Amelia in between them.
“Who brought you here?” Lily asked.
“A very handsome man like me, Mummy. He carried me because the other kids were laughing at me.” Adrian said.
“Because you did the dance again!” Amelia shouted, her little chest rising in anger.
“Stop that; don’t start, please.” Liora cautioned the both of them.
“What’s the dance?” Ian asked in curiosity.
Lily grinned and whispered, “He holds his pee-pee and shakes his leg when he can’t hold his urine.”
Ian laughed out, earning him a glare from Liora, who was trying to keep Adrian from crying.
“Don’t you cry! Don’t be a baby!” Amelia pouted, her left hand on her waist and her right hand pointing at her brother.
Adrian’s lower lip shivered as he shouted, “I’m not crying."
"Yes, you are!” Amelia insisted in her baby voice, shaking her head at her brother.
Ian tried not to laugh as Liora picked up Adrian, turned, and glared at Amelia as she said, “Stop taunting your brother.”
"Mummy, that is why I am the older twin; I am his big sister.” Amelia responded with a grin.
Instantly Adrian went rigid in Liora’s hand as he shouted, "No, you’re not!”
For a split second everyone around them stopped to look over at them before moving on.
“Okay, I’ve had it with both of you. Ian, pick her up, or we are going to spend the rest of our time settling this argument.” Liora said, shaking her head.
On the other side of the airport, the man who had helped Adrian turned at the shout and saw the boy in the hand of a woman.
He couldn’t quite see her face, but he shrugged and muttered, “Probably his mother.”
Behind him, someone called, “Mr. Ashford, your ride is here.”
“Thank you.” Travis Ashford responded as he turned and walked towards the exit.
“Took you long enough to return; was starting to think you were avoiding New York.” Felix Lawson grinned.
Travis’s brow went up in surprise at the sight of him, his lips curling up in a smile.
“What are you doing here?” Travis asked as they exchanged a one-armed hug.
“Offering you a ride since you wanted your return kept secret.” Felix responded.
“Thanks, man. I thought you were just going to send a driver to pick me up.” Travis stated.
“We can use that time to catch up on important things, like the many medical review sessions you missed in the last few months.” Felix said.
“I see you got a new ride.” Travis said, raising his chin at the red spot car in front of them.
"Yes, I did, and no, don’t try to change the topic. Travis, it’s important you take this seriously. I’m talking as your doctor now and not just your friend.” "Felix said," his tone turning serious as they got into the car.
“Okay, okay, can we go?" Travis asked, settling into the car.
His luggage had already been sent to the hotel ahead of him, so he didn’t worry much about it.
Felix put on the car, its soft purr vibrating through the air and drawing attention.
“Here we go.” Felix muttered as Travis closed his eyes and sighed deeply.
He sped past some of the cars waiting to pick up people.
“Huh,” Felix muttered.
“What again?” Travis asked.
“Hmm, I thought I saw a familiar face," he said, his brows squeezed in confusion.
“Maybe you did.” Travis shrugged.
At that, Felix’s face lighted up as he said, “Ahh ahh, that reminds me.”
“Of what?” Travis asked, not sounding interested.
“I heard a person of interest is coming to town," Felix said.
Travis's eyes snapped open and narrowed instantly at Felix. There was only one person he had been desperate to find in the last two years.
On the other end of town, Michael and his mother walked into a restaurant where they were having a critical meeting.Elizabeth had refused to mention what Travis had as leverage since the last time she had broken down in his office. The fear of losing all that they had now was something he never wanted her to feel again."Hello, welcome," a man said as soon as he saw them walk in.“Thank you for coming today.” Elizabeth said as she pulled Michael to sit beside her. There was no exchange of names, nothing as they sat down. The stranger, a man who looked to be in his mid-thirties, sat down also with a brown envelope in front of him."Do you have any information for me?” Elizabeth asked.“It is just as you suspected. The..." the man started to say.“Yes, no need to complete that," Elizabeth quickly interjected.“Let him complete his words,” Michael said, glancing at his mother.“There is no need for you to deal with that. I will be the one to deal with you. The reason you are here is for
At the other end of the hall, Travis walked over to a quiet pair and sat down. The event had just come to an end, and somehow he could not bring himself to leave the room."Travis?" Felix called as he moved over to him.He had looked around and seen him walking over to sit at the back of the hall."Yes," Travis muttered."What's wrong? You look like a man whom the world has just abandoned," Felix said as he sat beside him. They sat there in silence staring at the other guests who were still walking about and discussing. The atmosphere was calm and tranquil, but Travis felt a storm raging inside him."What is it?" Felix asked softly."Nothing really; I am just a little exhausted," Travis stated."Why?" Felix asked, glancing at him."Well, for one, I am yet to see Doctor Athena anywhere here. Since her team took the liberty to come, I am assuming she skipped this weekend's launch," Travis stated."Yeah, looks like it," Felix said with a shrug."And then two, half of all the people who h
Liora read the message and saw it was from the kids. They had a thing with speaking with her before they slept so she knew she had to step aside."Is everything okay? If we didn't know better, one would think that you have a little kid that you are worried about," Nicole said in scorn.Liora looked up suddenly, looking around to be sure no one had heard what she said."Please excuse me," Liora said and walked away.Nicole let her go, not bothering to follow her. She had her own plan in mind, and she was going to make sure it was successful."Liora?" Betty called as she turned to see her heading towards the exit."She excused herself to take a minute, I guess," Nicole told her, smiling at her."Oh, okay, thank you," Betty responded."What was that about?" Ian asked as they all moved away from Nicole and the camera, which was now focused on a different set of people."It's probably the kids; I mean, it's that time of the night," Lily pointed out."Oh, okay, that's true," Ian agreed."I
Back at the hall, Scott saw Nicole, her eyes completely hardened as he walked into the room.“Nicole?” Scott called.“Yes,” Nicole mumbled, looking up at him.Scott could not hear her above the music being played in the background.“Nicole, where are you coming from?” He asked. Before she could respond, a group of people walked out of the main hall and passed in between them. Scott remained still unable to ask his question. The group was so much that they had to wait for a few minutes before Scott could move back to her side."What is it?" Scott askedNicole shook her head, trying to remain calm. Maybe coming to the event was a mistake after all. The room felt electric and charged, a suffocating weight settling over every corner as her heart settled into uneasy calmness."Are you alright?" He asked again.“No, I am not. I don’t think I want to be right now.” Nicole responded.Scott pulled her with him, locating a quiet spot behind the hall, and walked her over to it.They sat down and
“Hello ladies and gentlemen, kindly make your way to the main hall for the event as we start.”The words echoed through the room as people tried to round up their breakfast."Oops, looks like I have to go,” Liora said. Her eyes had a mischievious glint as she took a step close to Nicole and said, “Spend your time making something of yourself instead of worrying about a man.”Before Nicole could respond, Liora turned and headed back into the room and walked straight towards the main hall.“Welcome everyone and thank you for gracing this event. It’s really an honor to have you all gathered here today.” Raphael said as he took the introductory speech.“So to start, I would give us a brief overview of the reason why we are gathered in this room today.” He continued. The large screen behind him lit up as key points of the initiative appeared one after the other. He spoke on the need for stronger partnerships, sustainable healthcare development, and the importance of combining private innov
Felix looked from Travis to Scott and shook his head as he placed a hand on Travis’s arm to draw his attention.“No!” Felix said harshly.“What?” Travis asked."Do I really have to say it out loud?" Felix asked. Before Travis could answer, a guest walked past them almost bumping into Felix."So sorry," The person said."No, it's absolutely fine." Felix replied."Mr. Lawson?" The person asked and started a small introductory conversation with Felix.Felix wrapped it up quickly and turned to Travis who still had a scowl on his face.“You know what I mean. You and Scott have been at each other's throats for God f*king knows how long. So do not let him reel you in because of Liora," Felix warned.“This has nothing to do with Liora. We are rivals for this project, so yes, it is expected that there would be some tension between us.” Travis replied.“I know what I see, and this right here is not tension because of the project.” Felix pointed out."What other reason could there be? I am sure t
At the sound of the voice, Liora’s shoulder stiffened. The odd familiarity of it made her eyes harden as she turned to look back.“It is really you.”Liora stared at the woman in front of her. Years of the cruelty she had shown her flashing back in her mind.“Hello, stepmother," Liora muttered.“It
Liora's face became unreadable as she asked, "Because of what?""Your mother," Ellen says, her eyes narrowed."Don't you dare!" Liora snapped, her hands balled into a fist at her side."I knew it; if you think you're going to take this away from me that easily, you're joking. I'm going to fight you
Lily and Liora exchanged a look before Lily coughed slightly. They walked out of the elevator, but Ellen refused to move out of the way."What were you two talking about?" Ellen insisted."Nothing that concerns you," Liora said, walking past her."It does not look like that to me," Ellen insisted."
The silence that followed David’s outburst was deafening, with tension thick enough to cut through.Elizabeth had a smug look in her eyes as she stared at Travis, waiting patiently for him to speak, hoping his words would sink him deeper into the trap she had planned."What do you want to hear? Wha
