Chapter 3

Author: Amber Fleck
Not long after Enya and I got married, I started noticing that she was smiling at her phone more and more often.

Whenever she was with me, she'd instinctively place it face down. And whenever she stayed late at work and came home, I could always catch a faint trace of an unfamiliar man's cologne on her clothes.

When I confronted her, she just sighed with irritation.

"I was smiling because someone sent something funny in the group chat. The phone thing is just a habit I picked up at work. And the cologne? If a client decides to wear it, should I ask him to change his cologne for my husband's sake?"

Still, I couldn't shake my suspicions.

I turned to Ryan for advice.

He leaned in and whispered, "If you notice something suspicious next time, don't confront her immediately. Find out the truth first. Don't give her any opportunity to talk her way out of it."

As fate would have it, the opportunity came much sooner than I expected.

Enya left on an unplanned business trip.

In one of the photos she sent to confirm she'd arrived safely, I spotted a man's silhouette reflected in the hotel window.

I called Ryan, hoping he could tell me what to do. But he never answered.

With no other options left, I rounded up a few of our mutual friends and drove straight to the hotel.

When we kicked the door open, we found Enya sitting on the bed in a bathrobe, while a man gently cradled her bare left leg in his hands.

The one thing I didn't anticipate was that it was Ryan.

As soon as Enya noticed the camera in my friend's hand, her expression changed entirely.

"Eric, have you lost your mind?"

I was trembling with fury, clenching my teeth so tightly that my jaw ached.

"What are the two of you doing together?"

Enya finally snapped. She slapped the phone away from my friend's hand.

"Ryan and I are in the same field," she said. "I brought him here to sit in on a case with me. I twisted my ankle when he came by to talk through the details, and he was just checking the injury. What exactly is going through your head right now?"

The cologne she had so casually attributed to a client, however, was unmistakably the one Ryan always wore.

I said nothing. I just walked over and took her phone.

There was only one contact pinned at the very top—Ryan.

When I scrolled through their messages, I realized they'd sent more texts in a single day than Enya and I had shared over the last half a year.

I felt the blood pounding in my skull as a chill swept through my body.

"So this is your group chat, your so-called work habit, and your male client? Enya, if nothing is going on, then why are you keeping me in the dark?"

"That's enough!"

Pain flashed across her face.

"Eric, take a good look at yourself. Do you even recognize the person you've become?"

She tossed two hotel key cards onto the floor at my feet.

"I kept it from you because I knew you'd jump to conclusions and start blaming Ryan. Everyone knows how good he's been to you all these years. How could you twist this into him being my lover?"

As soon as everyone saw those two key cards, even the friends who had come to back me up started exchanging awkward glances.

"Eric, maybe this really isn't what it looks like..."

Ryan suddenly dropped to his knees in front of me.

"I'm sorry, Eric. I should have handled this better. Please don't let this come between you two."

While everyone else was distracted, I noticed the fleeting grin that crossed his face.

I lost control for a moment, and before I could stop myself, I had already struck him.

"Ryan! I treated you as my closest friend, and this is how you repay me? By framing me?"

The next thing I felt was an even harder slap across my face.

It came from Enya.

"Is this how you treat your closest friend?" she snapped. "By bossing him around his entire life? Forcing him to abandon his dream of going to the country's best law school just to follow you to some mediocre university? Eric, how could you possibly justify that?"

The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

"How could I justify it?"

I laughed bitterly.

"Without me, your uncle would have sold you to a coal mine years ago! Ryan, my parents paid 20 thousand dollars to rescue you from that hell. Yes, you got into law school, but your uncle pocketed every single cent of your scholarship. You were the one who begged me to help.

"When my family went under, law school tuition was beyond what we could both afford. I took the money my parents had set aside for my studies overseas and shared it with you, but we still didn't have enough. You ended up having to apply to the same university as me because it cost less. And now this is what you're telling people about me?"

The room went silent. The only thing we could hear was Ryan's muffled sobbing.

Enya's expression darkened. She stepped in front of Ryan protectively.

"If you were really as generous as you claim, you wouldn't humiliate Ryan by airing his past in front of everyone."

She then helped Ryan up.

Without sparing me another look, the two of them walked away together.

As we walked back to the station, Oscar broke the silence. He said, "Eric, I need to apologize. I was wrong to think you killed Ryan because of Enya."I smiled and shook my head. "It's fine. Maybe Enya overestimated how important she was to me."What I never expected was that Enya would request to visit me.When I saw her through the glass again, her hands were trembling so badly that she could barely hold the receiver."Eric... I'm so sorry..."She wept like a child."I had no idea you had gone through all of that. Back then, Ryan and I truly had nothing between us. I met him first, but the person I fell in love with was you. You were the only one in my heart from the very beginning, Eric."He lied to me. He told me those tragic stories about his past and made me feel sorry for him. I only got together with him because I wanted justice for him. I wanted to help him get revenge on you. That is why I even replaced your sperm during the IVF procedure."Divorce was never what I wa

As Ryan thrashed against his restraints, I kicked the chair over, and he hit the ground in the same position he had been in when I first laid eyes on him."Ryan, the day you ran over my father was your birthday. Did you know that even if you hadn't asked him to meet you that day, he would have come looking for you three days later on the exact date you first came to my house? That day, to my father, was the start of your new life."When you received that overseas job offer, I was even happier than you were. I told my parents before you could. That day, you asked my father whether he wanted a capable son who couldn't stay by his side, or a mediocre one who would always be there for him. My father said, 'As long as Eric is happy, that's all I care about.'"Too bad he never got to finish his sentence. Back then, he wanted to send me abroad. I gave up that opportunity and stayed in the country because of you. I would never have another chance like that in my life, but he never blamed me

I swallowed hard, struggling to make sense of his confession. I demanded, "What did you say?" Ryan lifted my chin, forcing me to face him. "Your family took me in for 13 years, so I ran your father over 13 times—one for each year I had to pretend to be grateful. From the moment you brought me to the city, do you really think you were some kind-hearted savior? "Eric, you were just lucky. You were born with everything I never had. I was the one born into the wrong family. I was the one who had nothing."I wrote that letter to reach you, lured you to that village, and let my uncle beat me—all to change my fate. I earned every bit of what I have today by myself, so why should I owe you anything? "I'm better than you, which is why Enya cheated on you. Your parents refused to accept me, so they deserved to die."His words cut deeper than any wound ever could. He threw a settlement agreement at my face. In the bottom-right corner, I saw Mom's signature, which looked like a hasty sc

As the accused, Ezra Beckett, I submitted the following statement."My father passed away in a car accident six years ago. The collision took place on a road that was still under construction, and there were no surveillance cameras in the area. "Based on statements from eyewitnesses, dashcam footage from the dealership that had serviced the other vehicle, and the traffic police's reconstruction using skid marks from the scene, the investigation concluded that my father was solely responsible."The driver of the other vehicle was Ryan. My mother signed a settlement agreement. Later that same year, she died of a stroke. My ex-wife, Enya, arranged both their funerals."Everyone involved concealed the truth from me, insisting I wouldn't be able to bear it. I lived through it all without knowing, becoming an orphan without ever understanding why. Every single day, I looked forward to the birth of the child my wife was carrying, never once suspecting that it was fathered by the man who

Five seconds later, the screen went black.Oscar's face turned deathly pale. "This isn't a live feed. It's a prerecorded video," he said.I laughed and said, "I never said it was live surveillance."A hard slap struck my face, knocking me to the ground. I felt a tooth fly from my mouth and land a few feet away. The metallic taste of blood instantly filled my mouth.Enya lunged at me and grabbed my collar. She demanded, "Where's Ryan? What did you do to him?"I silently watched the woman who had once shared my bed. Now, she was crying for another man."You just saw Ryan, didn't you? You simply failed to recognize him. Why are you yelling at me?"Oscar's face darkened. "We saw him? Where?"I lazily pointed back the way we'd come."Right there. Ryan was all beneath that overpass. You spent ten minutes driving over him. Not one of you looked back."All that followed was the heavy crash of Enya's knees slamming onto the concrete. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed like a pu

From that point forward, I stopped living as Eric Beckett. After everything I had endured, I chose to become Ezra, the man who would make them pay.Oscar lunged forward and seized me by the collar. "Where's Ryan's body, Eric? We already have enough evidence against you. Stop playing games."A faint smile crossed my face. "I have no idea where Ryan's body is. I only know where the living Ryan is."Everyone in the room froze. "Ryan's alive?"Tears streamed down Enya's face as she dropped to her knees. "Thank God..."But Oscar wasn't buying it. "Are you trying to drag this out? Our investigation shows that Ryan had no connection to the other five victims. You still haven't told us why you killed them."I held up my shackled hands. "I'm a dead man walking. I've got nothing to lose. It's Ryan who's running out of time."Oscar instantly tensed. It had already been five full days since my arrest. If Ryan had truly been imprisoned without food or water for all that time, h
