Valentina’s POV

“Serena.”

Her name barely left my mouth.

She stood at the top of the stairs, one hand gripping the railing, her breathing uneven. She looked different from the last time I had seen her.

Older somehow.

Not in years.

In everything else.

Her hair was pulled back, her face pale, and there was a cut across her cheek. Her eyes moved past me and landed on the baby in my arms.

Lucia.

The moment Serena saw her, something broke across her face.

Relief.

Fear.

Grief.

Valentina’s POV“Please don’t let them take my daughter again.”The words seemed to hang in the air.Dante didn’t move.Neither did I.His face had gone completely blank. Then he whispered the only word that mattered.“Mom?”No answer. He stepped toward the ventilation shaft.“Mom!”This time, a woman’s voice came through.“Dante.”He closed his eyes.I had never heard anyone say his name that way.Not like a business partner. Not like a husband. Not like a son.It was the voice of someone who had spent years missing him.Dante looked at his father.“You said she was alive.”His father nodded.“I told you.”“Where is she?”“Above us.”Dante looked at the ceiling.“Then get her.”His father moved toward the stairs.I followed. So did Adrian, Eva, Alessandro, and Clara. The babies remained in the nursery with two members of the security team who had finally made their way down the corridor.I didn’t want to leave them. But something told me we had reached the center of everything. We cl

Dante’s POVFor several seconds, I couldn’t move. The man standing at the end of the corridor looked older than the photographs I had seen. But there was no mistaking him.My father. The man I had buried in my mind years ago.The man I had been told was dead.Adrian stood behind me, staring at him like he’d seen a ghost.“You,” Adrian whispered. The man smiled.“Hello, brother.”Valentina tightened her grip around Clara.I stepped forward.“You’re dead.”The man’s smile disappeared.“So they told you.”“Everyone told me.”“And you believed them.”“You disappeared.”“I was made to disappear.”Adrian shook his head.“You were supposed to be gone.”“I was.”“For how long?”“Twenty-two years.”My chest tightened.Twenty-two years. The number meant nothing until I remembered something.I was a child twenty-two years ago.A very young child.I remembered my mother crying.I remembered Adrian telling me my father had died.I remembered a funeral. But I didn’t remember seeing a body.I had ne

Dante’s POV“Daddy?”The little voice came through the speaker again. My blood ran cold.Valentina looked at me.I looked at Helena.Nobody moved. Then the voice came again.“Daddy, are you there?”It wasn’t my voice she was waiting for.I knew that immediately. There was something in the way she said it. The familiarity. The expectation. She wasn’t asking whether I was there. She was asking whether her daddy was there.Valentina stepped toward the speaker.“Who are you?”Silence. Then a small laugh.“I know you.”Valentina’s eyes filled with tears.“How?”“You came to see me before.”“When?”“Before Mommy told me not to remember.”My stomach tightened.I looked at Helena.“What did you do to her?”Helena shook her head.“Nothing.”“You expect me to believe that?”“I expect you to listen.”The speakers crackled. Then the little girl spoke again.“Mommy said I have to stay quiet when the bad man comes.”Valentina looked at me.“Who is the bad man?”The child didn’t answer.Instead, ano

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED THREEDante’s POVNobody spoke. The silence inside the laboratory felt heavier than gunfire.Valentina stood completely still. Her face had lost all color.Eva looked like she was trying to breathe through a nightmare. And Helena—Helena simply watched us.As if she had dropped a stone into deep water and was waiting for the waves.I looked at her.“No.”Helena didn’t blink.“The child you raised was real.”“That isn’t what I asked.”“She laughed. She cried. She loved you.”“Stop.”My voice came out colder than I intended.“You don’t get to talk about love.”For the first time, something flickered in Helena’s expression. Not guilt.Never guilt.Maybe regret.Maybe exhaustion.“I did what I believed was necessary.”Eva laughed softly. It wasn’t a happy sound.“That sentence has destroyed more lives than bullets.”Valentina finally moved. One step. Then another. She walked until she was standing directly in front of Helena.“Tell me the truth.”“I have.”“No.”Valent

Valentina’s POVHelena stood in the doorway. She wasn’t smiling anymore. That frightened me more than anything. For the first time since we’d found her, she looked tired.Older.But her eyes were exactly the same.Cold.Calculating.Watching all of us as if she had already decided what would happen next.Dante stepped in front of me.“Don’t come any closer.”Helena’s gaze moved past him.Straight to the two babies.“You shouldn’t have opened that room.”“You shouldn’t have hidden it,” I said. She looked at me.“You still don’t understand.”“I understand enough.”“No.”She shook her head.“You understand what I wanted you to see.”My hands tightened around the baby.Dante glanced at the screens.“Explain the names.”Helena looked at the monitors. Then she smiled.“That part was always going to hurt.”“Who is the real Valentina?”She looked at me.Then at Eva.Neither of us spoke. The room felt impossibly small.Helena finally said, “You both are.”Eva’s eyes widened.“What?”Helena wal

Dante’s POVThe second cry came again.Louder this time.It wasn’t coming from the room we were in.It was behind the wall.“There’s another room,” I said.Valentina held the baby tighter against her chest. Her face had gone pale.“I heard it.”I looked at Adrian.“Find the door.”He was already moving.Eva stayed close to Valentina, while Lily clung to her hand. The darkness made everything worse.I could hear the baby’s soft breathing against Valentina’s chest, the frantic footsteps around us, and somewhere beyond the wall, another newborn crying as if it knew nobody was coming.I ran my hands along the wall.Nothing.“There’s got to be something.”Adrian stopped near the corner.“Here.”He pressed his palm against a section of stone.A small click sounded.A panel opened.Behind it was a keypad.I stared at it.“Do you know the code?”Adrian shook his head.“No.”“Try Helena’s birthday.”“Already did.”“Anthony?”“No.”I looked at the keypad.Four numbers. My eyes went to the brace
